The south-western Iberian stelae from the Final Bronze Age (FBA) and Early Iron Age (EIA) have long been the centre of archaeological interest. These monuments show representations of human and animal figures, objects such as weapons, ornaments and chariots. Moreover, they provide insights into prehistoric stone working and sculpting techniques. On the downside, petrological studies of the rocks and consequent reflections on suitable tools are still the exception. Due to the lack of analysis and technological studies, this research will put emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach involving petrographic and metallurgic analyses, complemented by experimental archaeology. Firstly, an accurate lithological determination of stelae from Capilla (Spain) has been established with petrographic methods. According to the results, two slabs for replications of stelae were obtained from the identified mono-mineral quartz-sandstone (“quartzite”) outcrop. The experiment involved the trial of chisels made from all expedient materials that were available in the FBA-EIA by a professional stonemason. Considering that such extremely hard rocks require robust tools for carving, a long ignored iron chisel from the FBA site of Rocha do Vigio (Portugal) was studied with metallography and exposed heterogeneous, however surprisingly high-carbon steel. The analysed rocks are amongst the hardest that can be used for sculpting, and in the course of the experiment, bronze and lithic tools could be discarded. The only tool that showed an effect was the replication of the steel chisel from Rocha do Vigio with a hardened edge. The distinct work traces were compared to the original monuments. We hypothesize that the production of carbon steel as well as its hardening were possibly already known at the FBA-EIA transition in Iberia. Hence, only the access to iron technology allowed for the making of stelae from the lithotypes that were frequently used in the Zújar basin around the municipality of Capilla.

In this work a multi-disciplinary and multi-analytical approach was developed with the aim of better understanding the effort and selection criteria involved in the search for slabs used for the construction of dolmens during the Neolithic. Nine dolmens within a strip with ~15x10 km2 on south Portugal (Freixo, Alentejo region), within magmatic and metamorphic geological basement were studied. Based on their chronology and geographic positioning the dolmens studied were systematized as follows: dolmens of the Freixo Group (7), dolmen of Godinhos (1) and dolmen of Candeeira (1). The work developed consisted of an intensive geological survey associated with a sampling protocol. These data combined with the results obtained through microscopy and whole-rock geochemistry on samples from dolmens and outcrops allow us to infer some conclusions about distances involved. The nearest exposures were not used as the unique collection site. Although the distances from dolmen to nearest outcrops ...

The archaeological excavation carried out in the Chalcolithic ditched site of Montoito 2 provided a set of vertebrate fauna, mainly mammals, but also birds. The assemblage was in a good state of preservation and provided a diverse taxonomic list with a majority of pigs (Sus sp.), but also deer, cattle, mainly domestic, sheep/goats, horses and canids. The assemblage also includes the remains of a corvid that through morphology and osteometry was classified as carrion crow or rook (Corvus corone/frugilegus). Despite being a small collection, their study is of great importance because it constitutes another point in the map of the Chalcolithic sites of the South of Portugal with fauna studied.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Dolmens are the most conspicuous remains of the populations of the 4th and first half of 3rd millennia BCE. These tombs are impressive not only for their monumentality, but also because of the socioeconomic investment they represent for those Neolithic communities, namely from the Central-South of Portugal, who built them. Although dolmens have been studied for their funerary content and typologies, an interdisciplinary approach toward the geological characterization and sourcing of stones used in these constructions has not received enough attention from researchers. With MEGAGEO project a multidisciplinary group of geologist and archaeologists intends to assess the relationship between the distribution of dolmens in Central-South Portugal, their source materials, and the geological landscape. GIS will map the information gathered and will be used to analyse these relationships. The selection of the areas, with distinctive geologies (limestone vs granite), will allow to verify if h...

In the studies that we have been developing about several occupations, from 4th and 3rd millenniums BCE, of the São Pedro site (Redondo), the lithic industry remains have been one of the subjects less worked. For this reason, we consider it relevant to analyse one of the lithic artefacts items more widely recorded, the arrowheads. Nevertheless, the long diachrony of study of the arrowheads, these artefacts are still insufficiently known in the settlement contexts in the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. In this paper, we intend to carry out a first techno-typological approach on these tools, placing them in the diachronic occupation of this site, and also to analyse its dispersion and possible relation with fortification structures. The arrowheads, signs of confrontation, but also signs of subsistence, must be understood in the dynamics of the communities that inhabited the São Pedro site over a millennium.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Englishalmost 700 animal bones and teeth from this Chalcolithic site in the alentejo are described and compared with other zooarchaeological collections in southern portugal and adjacent regions of spain. approximately half the sao pedro bones derive from wild animals like aurochs, red and roe deer, horse, wild boar, rabbit, hare and lynx. the other half includes domesticated animals like sheep, goat, cattle and pig. the sao pedro fauna like that of several other contemporary sites in the interior of portugal and spanish Extremadura and andalusia includes many wild animals perhaps reflecting their relative small human population, the ephemeral nature of these settlements or even their military nature with soldiers less inclined to keep livestock. Bos and Sus are therefore present in both wild and domestic forms. measurements of the aurochs, red deer and wild boar compared with those from other periods show that these three taxa were probably small in the mesolithic but had recovered...

The advance of urban pressures on the site of Paraíso has been a strong threat to their conservation, despite efforts by authorities and archaeological teams to be mitigated. The aim of this article is to present the result of two most recent archaeological interventions (2009 and 2010), that allowed record an important stratigraphic sequence of the IVº/IIIº millennium BC and a very significa...

Symbols for the dead in spaces of the living? Some remarks about the presence of engraved schist plaques in settlements in North Alentejo, in the context of Southwest Iberia. As a typical votive artefact of the megalithic communities of the Late Neolithic/Early Chalcolithic in Southwest Iberia, the engraved schist plaques can be found mainly in funerary contexts during the last centuries of the 4th millennium and the firsts of the 3rd millennium BCE. However, these artefacts are also present in residential spaces, being found in open settlements, fortified settlements and ditched enclosures, with radiocarbon dates that fall between the last quarter of the 4th millennium and the second half of the 3rd millennium BCE. Using several sites of the region of North Alentejo as case studies, the authors intend to put forward some interpretive lines about the presence of these artefacts in residential contexts – debating questions such as the existence of actual production areas within the settlement space (workshops) or the recovery and reintroduction of these artefacts in residential areas (as relics, understood in the context of new symbolic concepts), possibly recovered during the reuse of megalithic monuments, a practice widely known in the Southwest Iberia throughout the whole 3rd millennium and even in the 2nd millennium BCE.
