    The insect repellent DEET (0.1% concentration), used as a mosquito oviposition deterrent in the laboratory, influenced the retention and maintenance of mature eggs by caged gravid female Aedes albopictus Skuse. This egg-retention mechanism could benefit survival because the gravid females were ultimately able to lay maintained eggs upon availability of water, but the length of forced egg-retention time reduced the number of eggs laid per female. Gravid females with retained eggs also laid a higher percentage of eggs that failed to tan, and this percentage increased with time duration of egg-retention. Percent egg hatch was not significantly affected by DEET when used as an oviposition deterrent; however, percent hatch was affected by time duration of egg-retention in both treated (exposed to DEET) and untreated (control) gravid females.     Rice cultivation is important in China with over 29.33 million hm2 of rice fields, producing 28.9% of rice yields worldwide. Rice fields are mass breeding sites for mosquitoes with approximately 40 mosquito species found breeding amongst them. Anopheles sinensis, Anopheles lesteri, and Culex tritaeniorhynchus are the three main species that are found breeding in rice fields. An. sinensis and An. lesteri are important vectors of malaria in flat areas of China, and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus is a main vector of Japanese B encephalitis. This review provides the principles of mosquito control used to target the species of mosquitoes breeding in rice fields, as well as some main approaches that have been tested and implemented for mosquito control in the past 70 years.     The mosquitoes Aedes aegypti (L.) and Ae. albopictus Skuse are the major vectors of dengue, Zika, yellow fever and chikungunya viruses worldwide. Wolbachia, an endosymbiotic bacterium present in many insects, is being utilized in novel vector control strategies to manipulate mosquito life history and vector competence to curb virus transmission. Earlier studies have found that Wolbachia is commonly detected in Ae. albopictus but rarely detected in Ae. aegypti. In this study, we used a two-step PCR assay to detect Wolbachia in wild-collected samples of Ae. aegypti. The PCR products were sequenced to validate amplicons and identify Wolbachia strains. A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was developed and used for detecting Wolbachia in selected mosquito specimens as well. We found Wolbachia in 85/148 (57.4%) wild Ae. aegypti specimens from various cities in New Mexico and in 2/46 (4.3%) from St. Augustine, Florida.     Florida faces the challenge of repeated introduction and autochthonous transmission of arboviruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Empirically-based predictive models of the spatial distribution of these species would aid surveillance and vector control efforts. To predict the occurrence and abundance of these species, we fit mixed-effects zero-inflated negative binomial regression to a mosquito surveillance dataset with records from more than 200,000 trap days, covering 73% of the land area and ranging from 2004 to 2018 in Florida. We found an asymmetrical competitive interaction between adult populations of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus for the sampled sites.     With malaria control in Latin America firmly established in most countries and a growing number of these countries in the pre-elimination phase, malaria elimination appears feasible. A review of the literature indicates that malaria elimination in this region will be difficult without locally tailored strategies for vector control, which depend on more research on vector ecology, genetics and behavioural responses to environmental changes, such as those caused by land cover alterations, and human population movements. An essential way to bridge the knowledge gap and improve vector control is through risk mapping. The present study analysed the correlation between prevention measures and social economic development on the incidence of malaria in Hainan from 2001 to 2013. The data of malaria preventative measures and socio-economic development were collected from various cities and counties in Hainan Province from 2001 to 2013 and analysed by the grey correlation analysis system.     The pretest availability of 10% sucrose solution and/or partial blood engorgement in Aedes albopictus Skuse significantly influenced mosquito attack rates and the time of repellent protection in laboratory bioassays. In 46 cm L x 38 cm W x 37 cm H cages used in USDA repellent tests, non-blood-fed and partially blood-fed mosquitoes attempted to bite at similar rates. In small cages (5 cm dia. x 4 cm H), holding individual females, mean mosquito attack rates were reduced when females were partially blood fed, compared with those not blood fed. The protection period from bites by Ae. albopictus using 25% ethanolic deet (N,N diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) increased significantly in small and USDA standard cages when females had pretest access to sucrose solution, compared with females starved for 12 h. Partial blood engorgement in mosquitoes affected repellent protection time in USDA standard test cages but not in small cages.

    The relationship between body size and fecundity of adult female Glyptotendipes paripes collected along southern shore areas of Lake Monroe, Sanford, FL, was studied by measuring wing length and examining ovaries, follicular development, and number of eggs/egg mass. Wing length of nulliparous, as well as parous females, had a significant (P < 0.01) linear relationship with dry body weight. Large females had a significantly (P < 0.01) higher number of follicles and eggs/egg mass than small females. No correlation existed between wing length and parity nor between wing length and age composition of field populations sampled between January and June 1993.

    Five organophosphates (OPs) (chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos methyl, fenthion, malathion, and temephos), 3 pyrethroids (bifenthrin, cypermethrin, and permethrin), and 2 microbial pesticides (Bacillus thuringiensis serovar.israelensis [B.t.i.] and Bacillus sphaericus) were tested as larvicides against a Florida Aedes albopictus population colonized in the laboratory. In addition, 3 insect growth regulators (IGRS) (diflubenzuron, methoprene, and pyriproxyfen) were evaluated. All OPs, except for malathion, were highly effective as indicated by low LC90s ranging from 0.0069 ppm (chlorpyrifos) to 0.026 ppm (fenthion); the larvae were considered tolerant to malathion (LC90 = 1.043 ppm).     Topical application (LD) and time-mortality response (LT) methods were used to determine resistance levels of field-collected strains of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). LD50s for chlorpyrifos were determined for seven strains. LT50s and LT90s with eight insecticides were determined for another three strains. Resistance ratios (RR) of > 10 to chlorpyrifos (LD50) were directly related to a significant decrease in activity in Ebeling choice-box tests. Using the LT method, the three field-collected strains were shown to possess zero to moderate resistance at the RR50 level (0.9-5.3) to organophosphates, moderate to high resistance to (1.4->21.0) to carbamates, moderate to high resistance (4.3-20) to cypermethrin, and high resistance (>17->35) to synergized pyrethrins. When the three field-collected strains were tested in choice boxes, RR50S of 1.2-2.2 for chlorpyrifos and 2.5-5.3 for diazinon directly related to significantly lower efficacy. Low-level propoxur resistance (RR50 of 1.4-2.3) also reduced choice-box efficacy, but an RR50 of 0.9-1.3 for acephate did not reduce its performance. Cypermethrin deposits used in choice tests killed cockroaches exhibiting RR50s as high as 20 in the lethal time test, perhaps because resistance mechanisms could not detoxify the exceptional activity of the active ingredient formulated as a wettable powder. Because they were repellent, residual deposits of pyrethrins resulted in poor efficacy in choice tests with either susceptible or field-collected strains. Strains with low-level physiological resistance as measured by the time-mortality response method survived insecticide exposure in choice-box tests to certain organophosphate and carbamate insecticides, indicating that these compounds would not be effective in the field.

This study presents a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis to compare IVM strategies used by MCPs in Saint Johns County, Florida and Guayas, Ecuador.     The effectiveness of the attractants 1-octen-3-ol (octenol) and L-lactic acid (Lurex) on the collection of Aedes albopictus, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. pipiens pallens, and Anopheles sinensis was first evaluated in Mosquito Magnet Pro traps in Yamenkou and Badachu residential areas, Beijing City, and Lishui area, Zhejiang Province, China. The Mosquito Magnet Pro traps baited with octenol collected significantly more Ae. albopictus, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, and An. sinensis, but fewer Cx. pipiens pallens than collection by the traps alone. There were no significant differences in the numbers of Cx. pipiens pallens, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, and An. sinensis collected by Mosquito Magnet Pro traps baited with Lurex compared to the traps alone, but the Mosquito Magnet Pro traps baited with Lurex collected significantly more Ae. albopictus than the number collected by the traps alone at 2 areas in Beijing.

    The biting activity and host attractancy of vector mosquitoes are important in assessing the risk of arbovirus transmission, especially where migratory and nonmigrating bird species congregate, such as in Hulun Lake, Manzhouli. In 2009, the population distribution, species diversity, biting activity, and host attractancy of mosquitoes were investigated in Hulan Lake and its associated prairie area. The adult mosquitoes were captured either by human volunteers using aspirators in mosquito nets, by CO2-baited light traps, or by animal-baited traps. In total, 27,004 mosquitoes, representing three genera and 10 species, were collected from Manzhouli, China, in July 2009, of which Aedes dorsalis (Meigen) were most predominant species, followed by Ae. vexans (Meigen). Biting activity peaks by Ae.flavescens (Muller), Ae. dorsalis, and Culex modestus (Facalbi) on human subjects were investigated. Four mosquito species were captured from different animal sheds (sheep, cattle, and goose). Ae. flavescens was more abundant in the cattle shed than in the other two sheds. The Ae. dorsalis in the sheep shed was much higher than in the other animal sheds. The Ae.flavescens collected via chicken-baited traps were significantly higher than those collected via rabbit-baited and pigeon-baited traps. There were no significant differences in the number of Ae. dorsalis and Ae. vexans collected using the three different animal traps.

    We evaluated the efficacy of attractive toxic sugar baits (ATSB) in the laboratory and field with the low-risk active ingredient dinotefuran against mosquito populations. Preliminary laboratory assays indicated that dinotefuran in solution with the sugar baits was ingested and resulted in high mortality of female Culex quinquefasciatus Say and Aedes aegypti Linnaeus. Field studies demonstrated >70% reduction of mosquito populations at 3 wk post-ATSB application. Nontarget feeding of seven insect orders-Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Orthoptera, and Neuroptera-was evaluated in the field after application of attractive sugar baits (ASB) on vegetation by dissecting the guts and searching for food dye with a dissecting microscope. Nontargets were found stained with ASB 0.9% of the time when the application was applied on green nonflowering vegetation. Only two families were significantly impacted by the ASB application: Culicidae (mosquitoes) and Chironomidae (nonbiting midges) of the order Diptera. Pollinators of the other insect orders were not significantly impacted. No mortality was observed in the laboratory studies with predatory nontargets, wolf spiders or ground beetles, after feeding for 3 d on mosquitoes engorged on ATSB applied to vegetation. Overall, this novel control strategy had little impact on nontarget organisms, including pollinators and beneficial insects, and was effective at controlling mosquito populations, further supporting the development of ATSB for commercial use.

    The present study assessed the personal protection efficiency of seven commercially available mosquito control devices (MCD) under field conditions in Israel. Trials were performed in a high biting-pressure area inhabited by large populations of mosquito and biting midge species, using human volunteers as bait in landing catch experiments. Results show that under minimal air-movement, three spatial repellent based products (ThermaCELL(®) Patio Lantern, OFF!(®) PowerPad lamp, and Terminix(®) ALLCLEAR Tabletop Mosquito Repeller) significantly reduced the biting-pressure (t-test - P<0.01) when positioned at short distances from a volunteer (3, 7.5, and 10ft.), with the ThermaCELL unit being most effective (96.1, 89.9, and 76.66% reduction, respectively). No significant differences were seen between the three aforementioned devices at distances of 3 and 7.5ft., while at a distance of 10ft., only the ThermaCELL patio lantern repelled significantly more mosquitoes then the Terminix ALLCLEAR Tabletop Mosquito Repeller (t-test, P<0.05). In contrast, mosquito traps using attracting cues to bait mosquitoes (Dynatrap(®), Vortex(®) Electronic Insect Trap, Blue Rhino(®) SV3100) either significantly increased or had no effect on the biting-pressure at short distances compared with the unprotected control. Trials conducted over large areas showed that only the Blue Rhino trap was able to significantly reduce the biting-pressure (40.1% reduction), but this was only when operating four units at the corners of an intermediate sized area.

    Multiple surveillance traps are currently available for adult mosquito surveillance. In this study, 2 new types, the Maxttrac™ Uno and Maxttrac™ Breeze mosquito traps, were compared against the BioGents™-Sentinel trap (BGS) for overall success in collecting Aedes albopictus in a 1,027-m(2) vehicle enclosure and in the field. The enclosure test results showed both traps collected significantly fewer Ae. albopictus, compared to the BGS trap. The modification of using all BG lures for each trap did not increase the number of mosquitoes collected in the 2 new traps, when compared to collection with the original lures tested in the vehicle enclosure. Field test results showed that BGS trap collected higher numbers of Ae. albopictus than the 2 new traps, regardless of switching lure or not. Overall, the BGS trap was the most effective trap and the 2 new traps could be used as additional tools for the collection of Ae. albopictus.

    Dual attractant toxic sugar baits (D-ATSB) containing two host kairomones, L-lactic (LA) and 1-octen-3-ol (O), and fruit-based attractants were evaluated through olfactory, consumption and mortality, and semi-field experiments to determine if host kairomones could first, enhance attraction of a fruit-based (attractant) toxic sugar bait (ATSB), and second, increase the efficacy of a fruit based attractive toxic sugar bait (ATSB). Four combinations of LA and O were incorporated into the ATSB and evaluated in an olfactometer to determine if these combinations could enhance attraction of Aedes aegypti (L.) to the bait. Ae. albopictus (Skuse) and Ae. aegypti were used to determine bait consumption through excrement droplet counts and percent mortality, of the most attractive D-ATSB (1% LA and 1% O) from the olfactory study.
