TRAP

Large cage and field studies were conducted to compare the efficacy of 2 American Biophysics Corporation mosquito traps, the standard professional (PRO) trap and a new counterflow geometry (CFG) trap. The PRO trap utilizes conventional downdraft technology and the CFG trap uses a patent-pending technology. In large cage studies, similarly baited CFG traps captured approximately 1.7 times as many laboratory-reared Aedes taeniorhynchus as the PRO trap. The CFG trap baited with CO2 + octenol resulted in significantly reduced landing counts compared to all other treatments; mean landing count was reduced from 233.8 (12.99/min), when no trap was present, to 24.7 (1.37/min). In field studies against natural populations of woodland species, the CFG trap captured 7.8 times more mosquitoes than the PRO trap overall, and approximately 11 times more Anopheles crucians, Anopheles quadrimaculatus, and Culex erraticus.

There is limited genetic mapping data useful for breeding programs of watermelon. Introgression lines should be a use-
ful tool for genetic studies and genetic enhancement of watermelon cultivars. In this study, we used an advanced re-
combinant population (BC2F2) to identify and map chromosomal segments of the wild watermelon Citrullus lanatus var. citroides that were incorporated in the genome of the watermelon cultivar Crimson Sweet (Citrullus lanatus var. lana-
tus). An advanced recombinant population (BC2F2) was constructed using a United States Plant Introduction (PI)
494817 (C. lanatus var. citroides) (known to have moderate resistance to bacterial fruit blotch) as a donor parent, and
the elite watermelon cultivar Crimson Sweet (C. lanatus var. lanatus) as the recurrent parent. The genetic linkage map
consists of 272 markers, including 89 sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP), 72 targeted region amplifica-
tion polymorphism (TRAP), and 111 high frequency oligonucleotide-targeting active gene (HFO-TAG) markers. The
272 markers were assembled into 51 linkage groups, covering a total genetic distance of 2162 cM, with an average
genetic distance of 7.9 cM between markers. Also, we expended the genetic linkage map for watermelon derived from a testcross population {Griffin 14113 [C. lanatus var. citroide (L.H. Bailey) Mansf.] x watermelon cultivar New Hamp-
shire Midget (C. lanatus var. lanatus)} x PI 386015 [C. colocynthis (L.) Schrad.]. The genetic linkage map based on the
test cross population consists of 558 markers that cover a genetic distance of 2760.8 cM. This linkage map consists of
41 linkage group, including 10 large linkage groups (ranging from102-240 cM), nine intermediate size linkage groups
(ranging from 62-93 cM), and 22 small linkage groups (ranging from 2-56 cM). Comparative mapping between these
two linkage maps identified high consensus in 25 HFO-TAG markers and one TRAP marker that represent 8 linkage
groups in the BC2F2 population and 9 linkage groups in the testcross population. These results indicate that HFO-TAG
markers should be useful in comparative mapping. The extended genetic maps and the genetic population in this study
should be useful in breeding programs using marker assisted selection and should serve as a platform for further de-
velopment of introgression lines for watermelon.

La trap, considerata la più recente evoluzione della musica rap, approda in Italia dai quartieri afroamericani poveri di Atlanta nei primi anni Dieci. Sebbene subito stigmatizzata per i suoi contenuti espliciti e controversi, essa conquista però il pubblico adolescente e scala inesorabilmente le classifiche discografiche. Ma qual è la composizione sociale e quali le forze economiche che ne hanno fatto la leva cruciale per il rilancio dell’industria musicale? Il libro propone un’introduzione al tema contestualizzando il fenomeno nel quadro della più generale ristrutturazione dell’industria musicale, facendo luce in particolare sull’apporto innovativo e di capitale sociale e culturale arrecatovi da adolescenti esclusi dai circuiti del lavoro salariato e della formazione eppure divenuti forza produttiva vitale per la riproduzione del potere economico delle grandi label. Enfatizzando l’ambivalenza del rap tra leva del mercato musicale e forma espressiva di elezione di gruppi subalterni e periferie, l’autore propone infine tre possibili linee di indagine per una agenda di ricerca sulla musica (t)rap in Italia.

Stone-built installations known as ‘leopard traps’ are found throughout the deserts of the Middle East. They have generally been considered to be recent in date, and to have been built by Bedouin or other local communities to trap carnivores that threatened their flocks. But how much older might they be? Survey in the hyper-arid ‘Uvda Valley of the southern Negev Desert in Israel discovered 23 ‘leopard traps’, 19 of them clustered in a relatively small area. This study describes the architecture and function of these structures and presents the first optically stimulated luminescence ages for two of them. These results demonstrate that the traps are ancient and were already in use before the late fourth millennium BC, not long after the adoption of herding by the desert dwellers.

We investigated and compared the pattern of accumulation of recent and late atretic follicles in the ovaries of Iberian sardine, Sardina pilchardus, in relation to body size with the aim to examine whether late atresia can be used in back-calculations of individual spawning history. Oppositely to earlier stages, late atresia in sardine was shown to accumulate even at peak spawning periods in fish of larger size/age indicating a relationship between atretic intensity and the distant reproductive performance of the individuals. Despite the fact that intensity of late atresia was very high in some occasions, its accumulation was not shown to impede imminent spawning activity. Lack of dependence between imminent spawning activity and the intensity of late atresia was related to the differential pattern with which postovulatory and atretic follicles are associated to the lamellar epithelium of the ovary. Finally, the effect of the ‘reference trap’ which is a major source of bias when quantifying structures in stereological measurements, could be mediated or even completely removed by using a measure of ovarian growth, such as gonosomatic index in the present study, as a covariate when modeling variability in the intensity of atresia.

This paper examines Greek visual arts production during the " crisis " ; a period when the country's contemporary art scene gained international attention. Our research focuses on emerging young artists studying at the Visual Arts Department of the Athens School of Fine Arts between 2010 and 2013. We present several works, mostly exploring issues of national identity and the politics of " crisis " that we consider as exceptional in the sense that the majority of students and academic staff of the School consciously distance themselves and their art from current and " trendy " sociopolitical matters. A number of these artworks incorporate contingency in their own way and may entrap the viewers into a perplex web of meanings concerning " crisis " that critically subvert stereotypes. We address our subject directly through such an artwork created by one of the paper's authors, Io Chaviara, and conclude by giving the floor to the artist in order to demonstrate how her entrapping " device " works.

The extend to which seed dispersal influences seedling recruitment is of major importance for forest dynamics. In non-equilibrium situations, seed dispersal might be of even further importance as it is a major determinant of the rate and composition of secondary succession. We modelled primary seed dispersal in a planted pine–spruce stand intensively recolonized by Abies alba and Fagus sylvatica, an
