Ion mobility spectrometry has become the most successful and widely used technology for the detection of trace levels of nitro-organic explosives on handbags and carry on-luggage in airports throughout the US. The low detection limits are provided by the efficient ionization process, namely, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) reactions in negative polarity. An additional level of confidence in a measurement is imparted by characterization of ions for mobilities in weak electric fields of a drift tube at ambient pressure. Findings from over 30 years of investigations into IMS response to these explosives have been collected and assessed to allow a comprehensive view of the APCI reactions characteristic of nitro-organic explosives. Also, the drift tube conditions needed to obtain particular mobility spectra have been summarized. During the past decade, improvements have occurred in IMS on the understanding of reagent gas chemistries, the influence of temperature on ion stability, and sampling methods. In addition, commercial instruments have been refined to provide fast and reliable measurements for on-site detection of explosives. The gas phase ion chemistry of most explosives is mediated by the fragile CONO(2) bonds or the acidity of protons. Thus, M(-) or M.Cl(-) species are found with only a few explosives and loss of NO(2), NO(3) and proton abstraction reactions are common and complicating pathways. However, once ions are formed, they appear to have stabilities on time scales equal to or longer than ion drift times from 5-20 ms. As such, peak shapes in IMS are suitable for high selectivity and sensitivity.

The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical validities and efficiencies of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the ADHD Rating Scale-IV (ARS) in identifying children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Korean community-based samples. A large sample of elementary school students (n = 1668) participated in this study. We used the CBCL and the ARS as the screening instruments. Diagnoses were determined by clinical psychiatric interviews and confirmed by DSM-IV-based structured interviews. Of the 46 subjects who underwent clinical psychiatric interviews, 33 were diagnosed as having ADHD. A T score of 60 with regard to the Attention Problems profile of the CBCL resulted in a reasonable level of sensitivity or positive predictive value in the diagnosis of ADHD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a new, continuous real time (13)C-urea breath test, BreathID, for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori in patients taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Fifty-two consecutive patients, positive for H. pylori by BreathID, were prospectively evaluated. Patients were randomized to receive either omeprazole 20 mg/day or pantoprazole 40 mg/day for 14 days. A repeat breath test was performed on day 14 while patients received their last PPI pill. Patients were given a test drink containing 75 mg (13)C-urea and 4.0 g citric acid. Real time, continuously sampled expired (13)CO(2), obtained within 6-20 min, was compared with measurement of expired (13)CO(2) by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate active knee flexion range of motion and hamstring strength following hamstring anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Case control study, consecutive sample. Seventy-four consecutive patients who had undergone hamstring ACL reconstruction underwent isokinetic muscle strength testing at 2 years post surgery. Measurements of the maximum standing active knee flexion angle with the hip extended were also taken. During isokinetic testing, we evaluated flexion torque at 90 degrees of knee flexion, in addition to the peak flexion torque. We further compared these parameters of muscle strength around the knee for the patients in whom only semitendinosus tendon was harvested as a graft source (ST group), and those from whom the semitendinosus tendon and the gracilis tendon were harvested (ST/G group). Isokinetic testing showed that, in both the ST and ST/G groups, the knee flexor strength of the involved leg was less effectively restored at 90 degrees of knee flexion than at the angle at which the peak torque was generated. Conversely, no significant difference was seen in the side-to-side ratio in either the peak flexion torque or the 90 degrees flexion torque between the groups. The side-to-side ratio in mean maximum standing knee flexion angle was significantly lower in the ST/G group than in the ST group. This study suggests that the loss of knee flexor strength following the harvest of the hamstring tendons may be more significant than has been previously estimated. Furthermore, multiple tendon harvest may affect the range of active knee flexion.

Quantitative vegetational data of canopy and woody subcanopy species (two life-forms adapted to occupy different strata at maturity) were compared with data collected in two temperate forest ecosystems to determine whether they exhibit a similar pattern of distribution. Tidal freshwater swamps (21 stands) and southern Appalachian forests (19 stands) were examined from data obtained using identical sampling methods. Separate structural analyses of the canopy, sapling, and subcanopy species were compared using the indirect ordination algorithm Detrended Correspondence Analysis. Environmental measurements collected in each stand were assessed for their relationship to the distribution of stands depicted by the ordination diagrams.

The illegal ivory trade recently intensified to the highest levels ever reported. Policing this trafficking has been hampered by the inability to reliably determine geographic origin of contraband ivory. Ivory can be smuggled across multiple international borders and along numerous trade routes, making poaching hotspots and potential trade routes difficult to identify. This fluidity also makes it difficult to refute a country's denial of poaching problems. We extend an innovative DNA assignment method to determine the geographic origin(s) of large elephant ivory seizures. A Voronoi tessellation method is used that utilizes genetic similarities across tusks to simultaneously infer the origin of multiple samples that could have one or more common origin(s). We show that this joint analysis performs better than sample-by-sample methods in assigning sample clusters of known origin. The joint method is then used to infer the geographic origin of the largest ivory seizure since the 1989 ivory trade ban. Wildlife authorities initially suspected that this ivory came from multiple locations across forest and savanna Africa. However, we show that the ivory was entirely from savanna elephants, most probably originating from a narrow east-to-west band of southern Africa, centered on Zambia. These findings enabled law enforcement to focus their investigation to a smaller area and fewer trade routes and led to changes within the Zambian government to improve antipoaching efforts. Such outcomes demonstrate the potential of genetic analyses to help combat the expanding wildlife trade by identifying origin(s) of large seizures of contraband ivory. Broader applications to wildlife trade are discussed.

The primary purpose of the study is to determine the prospects for the commercialization of the poultry industry in Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling method was employed in the selection of representative small and medium scale poultry farms and farmers from the two target states. Characteristics of both small and medium-scale poultry farms, baseline performance indicators as well as needs assessment of poultry farmers, among other information, were elicited and documented. It was established that the identified constraints, notwithstanding, small and medium scale poultry production holds great potential for commercialistion. Studies suggest that between 30% and 50% of the adult population in industrialized nations use some form of complementary and/or alternative medicine (CAM) to prevent or treat a variety of health-related problems. A comprehensive literature search identified 25 surveys conducted between 1982 and 1995 that examined the practices and beliefs of conventional physicians with regard to 5 of the more prominent CAM therapies: acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and massage. Six studies were excluded owing to their methodological limitations. Across surveys, acupuncture had the highest rate of physician referral (43%) among the 5 CAM therapies, followed by chiropractic (40%) and massage (21%). Rates of CAM practice by conventional physicians varied from a low of 9% for homeopathy to a high of 19% for chiropractic and massage therapy.
