Objective: to assess the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral program to control lower urinary tract symptoms after radical prostatectomy. Methods: a randomized clinical trial study, with 41 participants randomized into intervention (n=20) and control (n=21), for three months. The intervention group received the cognitive-behavioral program, while the control group received routine guidance from the service. Outcome variables were urinary incontinence intensity and lower urinary tract symptoms, assessed by the Pad-Test and Urinary Incontinence Scale of Radical Prostatectomy and King’s Health Questionnaire. Results: at the end of the study, the intervention group had a lower urinary incontinence intensity (p≤0.001), and there were less chances of presenting changes in urinary frequency (p≤0.001), urinary urgency (p≤0.001), nocturia (p=0.005), stress urinary incontinence (p≤0.001) and urge incontinence (p≤0.045). Conclusion: the cognitive-behavioral program was effective in reducin...

Objective: To evaluate health literacy conditions among professionals enrolled in a Multiprofessional Residency Program in Health. Method: Analytical cross-sectional study, conducted with 88 resident professionals, using the Brazilian version of the Health Literacy Questionnaire. The reliability of the mean scores on the scales and their correlation with sociodemographic variables were evaluated. Results: The results indicate that women take better care of their health and have better social support. The younger residents find it easier to interact with healthcare personnel and navigate the healthcare system. The strengths identified were the capacity to identify reliable sources of information, and being “information explorers”. The limitations are related to not being involved with their own health care and not using the healthcare system. Conclusion: The study collaborates to spread the theme among resident professionals, enabling reflection on the necessary competencies and abil...

Summary The human and social implications of poor health literacy are substantial and wide-ranging. Health literacy represents the personal competencies and organizational structures, resources and commitment that enable people to access, understand, appraise and use information and services in ways that promote and maintain good health. A large-scale societal improvement of health literacy will require political buy-in and a systematic approach to the development of health literacy capacity at all levels. This article builds the case for enhancing health literacy system capacity and presents a framework with eight action areas to accommodate the structural transformation needed at micro, meso and macro levels, including a health literate workforce, health literate organization, health literacy data governance, people-centred services and environments based on user engagement, health literacy leadership, health literacy investments and financial resources, health literacy-informed t...

This study analyzed factors associated with the quality of life (QoL) of prison officers (POs) in the Midwest Region of Brazil. POs in five penitentiary units participated in this cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic data were obtained through face to face interview and a World Health Organization Quality of Life abbreviated version (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire was applied to assess QoL. Student’s t-test or ANOVA were used for bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression was applied for adjusted analysis. The domains used for outcomes were: physical, psychological, social relations, and the environment. The lowest score among WHOQOL-BREF domains was environment (59.9; 95%CI 58.0–61.5). After adjustment, the factors associated with the physical domain were ‘female sex’ and ‘no history of workplace PO-PO violence’; factors associated with the psychological domain were ‘female sex’, ‘without spouse’, and ‘no history of inmate-PO violence’; factors associated with the social rela...

The study's aim was to analyze the importance assigned by the nursing staff to the recording of vital signs of elderly inpatients, as well as perceived barriers and benefits. Data were collected through interviews held with 13 nurses and the reports were analyzed using content analysis, considering the health belief model proposed by Rosenstock. The categories that emerged from the analysis indicate barriers that interfere in the proper monitoring of vital signs, namely: workload, lack of availability and accessibility of basic equipment such as thermometers, stethoscopes and sphygmomanometers, which compromises the nursing assessment and leads to a greater susceptibility to incidents. Although the facility does not provide conditions to measure vital signs properly, the nursing staff attempts to do what is feasible given their current knowledge and context to achieve the best outcome possible in view of the resources available.

This descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study was developed at a public Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Goiânia (Goiás, Brazil), with the objective to describe the concept and practice of care humanization developed by nurses of the referred ICU, who form a team undergoing a continuous process of development and scientific study. Data collection was performed in 2011, with seven nurses of the ICU, by means of taped semi-structured interviews, which were transcribed and categorized by content analysis, revealing the categories “The concept of humanization” and “Practice in the everyday intensive care routine”. Nurses are familiar with the concept and know how to practice humanized care, but still do not apply that knowledge in every situation, assigning this to external factors. It is necessary to identify the bottlenecks of this process to help plan the interventions needed to produce effective changes in the behavior of these workers.

Estudo qualitativo, tipo descritivo-exploratório, desenvolvido em Goiânia - GO.

The treatment of the cardiac conduction system disturbances improved with the development of the permanent cardiac pacemakers (PM). The authors perceived that pacemakers patients reported some kinds of fear concerning the machine that was stimulating their heart beating, and that their daily living activities seemed to be altered. The aim of this study was to identify the alterations in the daily activities reported by the patients as caused by the PM implantation. Eighty patients were studied and data were collected by an interviewing form based on the Functional Health Patterns (GORDON, 1994). The patients were asked if they had noticed any alteration caused by the PM. As for the alterations, the patients were asked if they had been ”better or worse”. To analyze the answers of the presence or absence of alterations in the activities of daily living, the statistical “test of one proportion” was used. The results pointed out that the frequency of alterations for a “better way” was s...

to analyze the functional health literacy (FHL), i.e., understanding and knowledge about chronic renal disease of 60 patients in pre-dialytic treatment. this is a cross-sectional study. FHL was measured by B-TOFHLA; and the knowledge, by questionnaire. Pearson correlation and Chi-square tests were carried out as well as linear regression models. all respondents presented inadequate FHL, and most showed insufficient knowledge about the disease and treatment. Low schooling was a predictive factor for worst FHL scores. Insufficient knowledge was related to age and compromised cognition. although association between predictive variables has not been found, limited capability to obtain and use health-related information and insufficient knowledge about their own condition and treatment can contribute to worse outcomes for CKD. Appropriate intervention strategies are necessary to deal with limited FHL and also greater knowledge and ability of professionals to deal with the matter.
