Abstract Precipitation is the primary source of water available to vegetation. Although many studies have explored the spatially heterogeneous relationship between vegetation and precipitation, it remains unknown why different precipitation levels lead to comparable vegetation growth and the same precipitation level leads to different vegetation growth. Here we provided a simple, new parameterized calculation method to describe the precipitation-vegetation relation. The new method characterizes the ability of local precipitation to supply the water needed for vegetation growth. In the case of China, the method can explain vegetation growth better than the common indices that represent water supply, such as the SPEI, the PDSI, and soil moisture. We further explored what induces the differences in the capacity of soil to redistribute local precipitation for vegetation growth by examining the sensitivity of the residual value between actual vegetation growth and theoretical precipitation-determined vegetation growth to water storage-related soil properties. Our results indicate that soil texture and soil depth to bedrock rather than climatic factors predicted the above mentioned residual values, which implies that soil water storage capacity can increase or decrease the amount of local precipitation needed for vegetation growth. Soil physical properties that involve a high clay content and a thickness between 1 and 3 m are favorable for the stored precipitation fraction for vegetation growth. Neglecting this effect of soil water storage capacity may introduce inaccuracies when simulating the impact of future climate change on vegetation growth.

Our study was aimed to investigate the mechanism of rs4759314 located in HOTAIR involved in congenital heart disease. Luciferase assay was performed to evaluate whether rs4759314 affected the transcription efficiency of HOTAIR promoter, and confirm miR-545 target gene. Real-time PCR, Western-blot and IHC were carried out to investigate the relationship among HOTAIR, EGFR, p-ERK, P-P38 MAPK. MTT assay and flow cytometry analysis were performed to detect the effect of HOTAIR on cell viability and apoptosis. The presence of G allele of the polymorphism located in HOTAIR promoted transcription activity of HOTAIR promoter. Furthermore, HOTAIR inhibited miR-545 expression. EGFR was identified as a virtual target gene of miR-545 using bioinformatics analysis, and miR-545 apparently decreased luciferase activity of wild-type EGFR 3'UTR, while miR-545 had no effect on luciferase activity of mutant EGFR 3'UTR. HOTAIR and EGFR were lowly expressed, while miR-545 was highly expressed in...

The influence of three Ca-containing amendments (dolomite, slaked lime, and limestone) on soil water soluble Pb (Pb-w) levels, Pb accumulation by two rice plants (TJ-8, japonica and II-3301, indica), and the factors affecting Pb-w were investigated. Pot experiment was performed under waterlogged conditions using Pb-contaminated soil collected from an agricultural field near a mine. It was found that the soil amendments significantly reduced Pb content in the rice plants in the order dolomite > slaked lime > limestone, irrespective of rice cultivar. The Pb content of brown rice with the added soil amendments was lower than that of the recommended limit (0.2 mg kg, GB2762-2017) except for cultivar II-3301 with slaked lime. There was a significant positive correlation between the Pb content of the roots, stems, leaves, and grains and the soil Pb-w levels. The amendments reduced soil Eh, Fe, and Mn concentrations in the pore water and increased soil pH. The total organic carbon (T...

The synthsis of fluorinated isoxazolidines in bicyclic settings has been realized via Ru(II)-catalyzed C-H activation of aryl nitrones with perfluoroalkyl-substituted olefins as the coupling partner. The reaction proceeded via initial chelation-assisted C(aryl)-H allylation followed by regio- and diastereoselective intramolecular dipolar addition between the nitrone directing group and the olefin unit.

The need to improve the accuracy of carbon emission measurements is a major issue which the tourism industry must resolve in order to reduce adverse impacts on climate change and the environment. This study established a detailed consumption list based on household survey data and calculated the carbon emissions of accommodation and services of the rural tourism industry of Mount Qingcheng using the input–output and lifecycle methods. Further, it analysed the key factors affecting carbon emissions. The results indicate that within the surveyed area, carbon emissions from accommodation and services amounted to 30.27 kg CO2/per person per day; these emissions were primarily from indirect sources, which accounted for 74.99% of the total emissions. Emissions from construction and production of durable goods accounted for 13.08% and 21.58% of the total emissions. The omission of these sources of carbon emissions was the primary reason for the carbon emission levels of the tourism industr...

We investigate both analytically and by numerical simulation the relaxation of an overdamped Brownian particle in a 1D multiwell potential. We show that the mean relaxation time from an injection point inside the well down to its bottom is dominated by statistically rare trajectories that sample the potential profile outside the well. As a consequence, also the hopping time between two degenerate wells can depend on the detailed multiwell structure of the entire potential. The nonlocal nature of the transitions between two states of a disordered landscape is important for the correct interpretation of the relaxation rates in complex chemical-physical systems, measured either through numerical simulations or experimental techniques.

Radiotherapy combined with platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard-of-care of locally advanced cervical cancer (CC) patients, while nearly 50% of patients do not respond to standard chemotherapy. Thus, identification of relative molecules participated in chemotherapy might provide new insights in the treatment of CC. In this study, we found a cohort of miRNAs were dysregulated upon treatment with cisplatin, among of which miR-29b was the most upregulated one. We further detected its expression in CC tissues, and found that miR-29b was significantly suppressed in CC and its precancerous lesions, HSIL tissues, and was negatively related with tumor invasion. However, upon treatment with cisplatin, the expression of miR-29b was significantly up-regulated. The biological function assays showed that overexpression of miR-29b suppressed the invasion, EMT procedure and angiogenesis of cervical cancer cells in vitro and inhibited tumor growth and neovascularization in vivo through target...

Imidate esters and diazo compounds have been established as bifunctional substrates for the construction of biologically active fused heterocycles via rhodium-catalyzed C-H activation and C-C/C-N coupling. This reaction occurs under mild conditions with high efficiency, step economy, and low catalyst loading.

Ligustrazine(TMP) has recently been used for the treatment of various cancers. However, its exact mechanisms of action, particularly the functions and the mechanisms of Ligustrazine in human hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC), have not yet been extensively studied. Recently, our findings suggest that Ligustrazine dose- and time-dependently inhibits the growth of HRPC cells by reducing their proliferation and promoting apoptosis. Interestingly, the treatment of hormone-refractory prostate cancer (PC-3) cells with Ligustrazine results in a significant inhibition of the activation of mTOR and related downstream targets, which are critical for cell growth. Furthermore, pull-down assays with 7-methyl-GTP Sepharose 4B beads indicate that Ligustrazine reduces the available eIF4E for translation initiation. Accordingly, the results from the translation assay using a luciferase reporter system further demonstrate that Ligustrazine indeed inhibits cap-dependent translation. In addition, the transient overexpression of eIF4E or MNK1 prevents the Ligustrazine-induced inhibition of proliferation and confers significant protection against Ligustrazine-induced apoptosis. Therefore, the present study provides evidences that Ligustrazine may be a candidate for therapeutic reagent for the treatment of HRPC and certifies that Ligustrazine modulates the availability of eIF4E mainly through the mTOR and MEK/ERK signaling pathways to inhibit cap-dependent translation. Taken together, our results indicate that the inhibition of cap-dependent translation is likely an essential mechanism in Ligustrazine-induced apoptosis.

We numerically simulate the diffusion of overdampd pointlike Janus particles along narrow two-dimensional periodically corrugated channels with reflecting walls. The self-propulsion velocity of the particle is assumed to rotate subject to an intrinsic bias modeled by a torque. Breaking the mirror symmetry of the channel with respect to its axis suffices to generate a directed particle flow with orientation and magnitude which depend on the channel geometry and the particle swimming properties. This means that chiral microswimmers drift autonomously along a narrow channel under more general asymmetry conditions than previously reported, a property of potential impact on their fabrication and technological applications.

To explore the association between G614T single nuclear polymorphism (SNP) of the alpha-adducin gene and the antihypertensive effect of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in essential hypertensive (EH) patients. Eight hundred twenty nine EH patients were given 12.5 mg HCTZ/d for six weeks. Alpha-adducin gene G614T SNP in the tenth exon was determined by PCR-RFLP in 754 patients with complete records. All the patients were grouped according to TT, GT and GG genotypes. After 6 weeks of HCTZ treatment, the decreases in DBP and MAP of patients carrying 614T allele of alpha-adducin were significantly greater than that of those carrying GG homozygotes (P < 0.05). The decreases in SBP and MAP were significantly greater in patients with the TT genotype as compared with GT or GG genotype (P < 0.05). The effective rate of BP fall by HCTZ was higher in patients with TT genotype than those with GT or GG genotype (P < 0.05). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that the TT genotype ...

A new chemiluminescent (CL) probe array assay approach was first developed. The new CL probe array was based on Co3O4-SiO2 mesoporous nanocomposite material, which not only has an excellent catalytic effect on the luminol-H2O2 CL reaction in alkaline medium but also can be used for the immobilization of enzymes. As a model, the novel bifunctional CL probe array has been applied to the high-throughput determination of glucose in human. The linear range of the glucose concentration was 3-90 μM and the detection limit was 0.36 μM. It breaks traditional development view in solid phase supports and provides new insights into the application of mesoporous material.
