It has been long known that bilinguals can switch their speeches from one language to another when interacting within their own community. Some experts argue that code switch occurs due to the lack of proficiency in languages, lazy choices and easy solutions in communicating, and impact of linguistic dominance. This paper describes the social factors which promote adult bilinguals in code switching. The paper focuses on three types of the social factors contributing to code switching. The first type deals with factors independent of specific speakers and circumstances such as prestige, cover prestige, and power relation. The second one is related to speakers’ competence both as individuals and members of a sub group. The last category refers to factors within the conversation where code switching emerges. To conclude, these social factors are highly relevant in prompting adult bilinguals to code switch.

This paper discusses the morphological and syntactical development of English acquisition, by a non-native speaker of English, based on the principle of Processability Theory. The aim of this paper is to apply processability theory principle to determine the highest emerged stages of the development of English acquisition with respect to syntax and morphology. Regarding the aim, the researcher employs the framework of Processability Theory proposed by Pienemann, (1998). This study was conducted through interview and picture task activities, making up for 15 minutes in each activity. The study found that first, the learner has reached stage 5 in the interlanguage syntax but the learner skipped stage 4. Second, the learner has reached stage 5 in the morphological interlanguage; produced lexical and formal variations as well as generated oversupplied tokens in several stages. In conclusion, despite the skipped stage and oversupplied tokens, the learner has reached stage 5 in the morpho...

Intercultural communication plays pivotal role in cross-cultural social context. Some scholars argue that the lack of language proficiency and competency may contribute to negative phenomena in the communication setting. However, this research paper argues that the failure to embrace cultural and psychological factors also pose serious cross-cultural problems. The study employed library research to gain evidences for this research. The result shows that insufficient cultural knowledge leads to injured feelings and judgment of impoliteness in cross-cultural setting. In addition, negative ethnocentrism and stereotype are the psychological factors that also triggered the problems. As the solution towards the barriers, this paper also suggests several strategies to establish successful intercultural communication when conducting verbal and non-verbal communication.

While some traditional grammarians claim that get passive is the alternative colloquial of be passive, some scholars argue that get passive cannot be used to replace be passive since the use of get as a passive auxiliary is very limited. Due to the debatable claims, this research paper investigated whether be passive can replace get passive or not. In finding the answer, the writing was done by a thorough library study about semantic structure and division of each passive’s role. The result shows that get passive cannot replace be passive because of several reasons. From a semantic structure point of view, firstly the stative verbs, such as emotion and thought cannot be addressed with get passive. Secondly, get passive does not go well with the verbs “creation”. Following the structure, it is important to note that be passive and get passive have distinctive roles according to the event. Six types of get passives support this claim because get passive shows no indication that it can...

The strong motive of East Timor government to establish a national identity through education had brought serious issues. This writing primarily discusses about the drawbacks regarding to East Timor language policy in education sector during the period of 2000 – 2008. ABSTRAK: This study examines gossip in two different ethnicities living in the city of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province namely Sabu and Rote tribes. This study specifically answers two main questions. First, what kind of gossip is usually discussed by women from both ethnicities. Second, which ethnic group produces more negative impacts from this social conversation. In addition to two questions above, several other elements were also analyzed in this study such as atmosphere, context, participants, age, ethnicity, education, social distance, and language use. The study employed observation and interviews method in collecting the data. The interview was done by applying close ended questionnaire. A total of 36 participants were included as samples and subjects in this study. The result of this study indicates that both ethnicities have a common topic when gossiping. For example, family problems, recipes, parenting, infidelity and others. Although two ethnicities are equally involved and experiencing the negative effects of this social conversation, women from the Sabu tribe have a higher level of involvement in terms of verbal and physical fights.
