Urbanization possesses the power to transform the physical and socioeconomic structure of cities globally. In developing countries, transformative urbanization requires employing suitable tools that can address contemporary challenges such as rapid population growth, housing and basic infrastructure provision, as well as inadequate financial and technical resources. Despite some criticism, public-private partnership (PPP) is increasingly being applied to tackle these challenges and to foster sustainable urbanization. Yet, limited studies have investigated PPP applications in providing housing and infrastructure in Nigerian cities. Using desktop study, this chapter analyzes the potentials and challenges of PPP in housing and infrastructure delivery in Abuja, Nigeria. It specifically reviews the modes of housing and infrastructure provision, highlights the concept and models of PPP, and examines the potentials and challenges of PPP in housing and infrastructure delivery in Abuja. The lingering problem of poverty prompted many countries to adopt community-based strategies for improving Quality of Life (QoL) of poor communities. Numerous studies have focused on identifying but ignored to establish the contribution of the factors that influence improvement in QoL by community-based projects. This paper measures, using Structural Equation Modelling, the contribution of the factors that influence QoL in a Community-based Poverty Reduction Project (CPRP) in Nigeria. The model revealed that the measured factors contributed only 36% of the reduction in poverty, which implies that there are other “hidden” factors responsible for the improvement in the quality of life. Keywords: Quality of Life, Community-based Projects, Poverty Reduction, Structural Equation ModellingeISSN 2398-4279 © 2018. Although public-private partnerships continue to gain popularity in infrastructure provision, the application of the strategy in housing delivery is bedevilled with many challenges particularly in the context of developing countries like Nigeria. This article aims to offer solutions to the challenges of PPP for housing delivery in Nigeria. Using a case study approach, the article investigated the challenges of PPP housing project in the federal capital territory [FCT] Abuja, Nigeria. The study found that “lack of transparency in the procurement process”, “inappropriate risk allocation”, “poor administrative machinery”, “corruption”, and incompetent private sector” are the major challenges that militate against successful housing delivery through public-private partnership in Nigeria. In conclusion, the paper outlined solutions for coping with the challenges of PPP for housing delivery in Nigeria.

Experiences in the application of the community-based model as a strategy for improving the quality of life of poor communities have reported improvement in terms of project performance. However, it has been observed that most studies placed emphasis on the overall performance determined at the aggregate level. For this reason, the findings, do not allow for an adequate expression of the variation in the success or failure stories of the projects and the explanatory factors for them. This article investigates the explanatory factors that account for variation in success and failure of a Community-based development initiative in Kebbi-state, Nigeria, using a case study approach.

Although public-private partnership (PPP) strategy has gained popularity as an alternative strategy in the delivery of public works projects, its application has come with mixed results. Numerous studies have attributed the success of PPP projects to contextual peculiarities of different administrative settings. This comparative study uses case study approach to analyse the similarities and differences of the critical factors that influence the success of PPP housing projects in Malaysia and Nigeria. The study reveals that while 'equitable risk allocation', 'stable political system', and 'reputable developer' are the most critical critical success factors (CSFs) in the case of Nigeria, 'action against errant developer', 'consistent monitoring', and 'house buyer's demand' are the most critical factors that influenced the success the PPP housing project in Malaysia. The findings widen the understanding of the contextual issues that dictates the relative importance of CSFs of PPP in developing countries.

The increasing reliance on public-private partnerships in the provision of infrastructure and services is well documented. However, despite an increasing reliance on public-private partnerships, the performance measurement of PPP projects is less clear in the normative literature. While assessment of success in traditional procurement approaches is relatively straightforward, PPPs, due to their multifarious nature, require more rigour in establishing the success factors and evaluating the extent of their contribution to the success of PPP projects. Using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach, this paper develops a conceptual framework for assessing the success of PPP projects. The authors contend that the proposed framework should assist PPP stakeholders in evaluating the performance of PPP projects.

Urban planning often involved controversial decisions, thus, requires the participation of stakeholders and citizens leading to
more acceptable and legitimise solutions. Public participation exercise, however, is futile if it is not functional for planning and
meaningful to the public. Functional participation means better planning decisions while meaningful participation creates
opportunities for public to influence decisions leading to a sense of ownership for the plan. This study aims to assess whether
public participation programme (PPP) in urban planning is meaningful to the community of Bida town, Nigeria. The study
examines the stages of government-based public participation programme (PPP), namely; early, middle and last stage in the
participatory process.344 questionnaires were administered using randomly sampling method to planning officers, traditional
leaders, youth leaders, and household heads. Descriptive statistics using central tendency was adopted in the analysis. Findings
reveal that public are predominantly involved at the early stage, while the other two stages have no significant citizens
engagement. The study suggests areas to improve public participation and invariably would help practitioners and law-makers in
designing effective plan for public participation programme in urban development.

Graphical abstract Abstract Housing, despite being one of the essential elements in the sustainability of human existence, remains a challenge particularly in the global south. Nigeria, the most populous country in west Africa has a gross housing deficit of seventeen million houses. This deficit keeps increasing due to high rate of urbanization and population growth thereby resulting in high rent, overcrowding and poor living conditions. Numerous research studies predominantly focused on investigating the challenges of housing delivery on the basis of quantity and quality perspectives. However, there is a dearth of evidence-based studies regarding the challenges militating against sustainable housing provision. This paper attempts to fill this gap by presenting an overview of the housing provision and the challenges militating against sustainable housing provision in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Nigeria. The article indicated that despite concerted efforts involving the adoption of both public sector " provider " and " enabler " approaches, challenges still exit towards sustainable housing delivery particularly to the low-income group. The paper recommends that housing policies and programs in the country should be designed to address the multi benefit objectives of social, economic and environmental dimensions of housing so as to achieve sustainable housing delivery in the country.
