La ricerca della forma come 'minimo strutturale' trova in Sergio Musmeci il fautore di una teoretica affatto eccezionale, ancora viva anche se sottaciuta, nelle più evolute espressioni dell'ingegneria strutturale, tra form finding e costruzione.

Una traccia fondamentale della composizione di Prouvé va ricercata nel significato attribuito alla prefabbricazione e all'industrializzazione edilizia. È un'invariante costruttiva che guarda ai procedimenti e ai materiali utilizzati dall'industria automobilistica e aeronautica, dapprima impiegando la lamiera d'acciaio e d'alluminio e poi gli estrusi in alluminio per la realizzazione di costruzioni sempre più leggere (mobili, case, scuole), da produrre in serie.

Restauro, conservazione, riuso sono da qualche tempo accostati al Moderno. Un apparente ossimoro: termini legati ad un prioritario rapporto con l'antico o il passato sono riferiti a ciò che invece sembra essere ancora vicino e vivo, la modernità. Quale relazione tra restauro del Moderno e Retrofit energetico?

The mass housing revolution that never was.
The web version CNN Style uses this title to introduce Jean Prouvè, great leader of the mass housing revolution. Prouvè’s revolution, between the 1930s and 1950s, was an amazing research into prefabricated steel houses:  an ethical conception of form applied to mass housing, where terms like mass production (each building is designed as a repeatable prototype), flexibility of use, transformability (without demolition),  demountable/reversible, are associated with architecture for the first time.

La relazione tra l’architettura e la sua costruzione, nell’arco del XX secolo fino al presente, trova una invariante saliente nella ‘costruzione a secco',
caratterizzata da almeno tre paradigmi che hanno modificato via via i modi di produrre e costruire, ma ancor prima quelli di pensare e progettare
gli edifici.
Tali paradigmi costituiscono i termini tassonomici di una filogenesi del binomio architettura/costruzione, dalle prime sperimentazioni dei Maestri,
fino a un presente guidato dalle cogenze normative in materia di sostenibilità ambientale e risparmio energetico.

Of the numerous semantic declinations of recycling, some being extremely bizarre and inconsistent, there is one that deserves special attention because it is applicable to architecture. I am referring to recycling as an action applied to those buildings with no ‘cultural’ value, where the drop in efficiency in functional (a use that is no longer requested by the market), distributional (lack of surfaces and their exposure), regulatory (fire-prevention requisites) or energetic terms, partly or wholly, is not associated to a loss in economic value. A process that extends the building’s life cycle and satisfies sustainability goals (economic and environmental) by savings in the use of materials and energy.

Considerati tra i padri fondatori dell’hi-tech, Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) e Konrad Wachsmann (1901-1980) ne sono in realtà assai distanti, perseguendo all'opposto un’architettura del risparmio delle materie prime e delle risorse energetiche, da attuarsi per oggetti (Fuller: dalla Dimaxion House alle strutture tensegrali, alla cupola geodetica) e per procedimento (Wachsmann: dal General Panel ai progetti per la USAF).

In the words of Frank Lloyd Wright, Myth gave the story of the epiphany of the skyscraper, which was purely American: "[...] It was really tall, but was above all a structure that replaced the sad overlapping cornice buildings
that were the norm at that time. [...] The skyscraper had become architecture”.

Jean Prouvé fulfilled the dream of architects of the 1900's to apply the industrial production methods to the building sector, and devoted an important part of his professional life (long but not particularly lucky) to the research of housing.

Peter Rice (1935-1992) expressed a new way of being an engineer, in a middle position between Architecture and Engineering, in the direction he called 'inventively' designing structural elements that have decided the architecture of numerous buildings of the 20th century.
His biography tells of his arrival in 1956 in the engineering studio of Ove Arup & Partners, the most important in the world, where he became Director in 1978; in 1977 he was co-founder of Piano & Rice; from 1984 he was Director of R.F.R. and Ove Arup Partnership. He has left an indelible mark on works such as the Sidney Opera House, the Beaubourg and Kansai airport, icons of public imagination and the architecture of our time, which have become metonymical with the places where they are built.

Le esposizioni  (universali, nazionali), come le fiere e i parchi a tema, sono  i luoghi delle fantasie architettoniche e urbane, una sorta di motore dell’immaginazione per l’invenzione di nuove forme di città. Luogo della sperimentazione di configurazioni architettoniche temporanee, dell’effimero, del visibile, dell’immagine che non riesce a rifuggire la cultura della tematizzazione.

La conclusione del nuovo Padiglione centrale della Fiera di Pordenone è occasione per parlare con Angelo Villa dei temi fondamentali della sua particolare ricerca architettonica, in tralice tra l’attività di architetto e quella di professore allo IUA di Venezia e con  Ermes Martinelli delle evoluzioni progettuali di questo complesso progetto e del suo cantiere.
