This is the ideal book to help prospective teachers improve children\u27s reading and language arts skills and instill in them a genuine and lasting love of reading. The book demonstrates numerous ways to integrate literature into the daily fabric of classroom life. Following a solid grounding in the basics every reading teacher needs, individual chapters explore genres of children\u27s literature and teaching strategies specific to each genre. Then, the authors examine currently accepted effective practices for engaging young readers in hands-on reading in a way that fosters a love of literature that will last a lifetime. Even though Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in Turkey has been switching from the traditional approach to the constructivist one since 2005, the classroom practices, teaching methods, evaluation system, school structures and materials, and the aspects of the administrators and teachers are still contrary to the principles of constructivism. This study offered constructivism as a new notion in teaching English as a foreign language for six willing teachers. Following a 10-day professional development seminar, the impacts on teachers’ change were observed. Data sources included: participant periodic interviews, observational fieldnotes and artifacts; and researcher logs. The findings showed that the treatment plan was effective to enable teachers learn constructivism, change their approach, and applications. This study provided noteworthy findings regarding professional development seminars. A well-planned and well-organized teacher development seminar with an on-going support a...

This report details a year -long study of the emerging literacy of preschoolers and kindergartens in two soutt-west Florida communities. Using a quasi-experimental design, the research staff studied two preschools and two kindergarten classes that implemented certain strategies associated with a whole language philosophy including shared reading experiences ch.ily and weekly opportunities to write freely. These classes and their four matched comparison groups were pretested and posttested with both qualitative and quantitative measures including the Goodman Book Handling task, a story retelling inventory (all classes pre and post), the Metropolitan Early School Inventory (all kindergarten classes; preschool posttest only), and the Metropolitan Readiness test (kindergarten only). Preschool experimental classes performed significantly better than comparison groups on the Goodman Book Handling task (.001), the story retelling inventory (.064), and on subtest C of the ESI called "H...

This paper compares the historical roots and principles of three current bod ies of literature, all of which advocate school and curricular reform. Originating from different fields, developmentally appropriate practice(early childhood), whole language (literacy education), and continuous progress(educational leadership) are presented and compared by authors representing each field. A discussion of common roots and threads among these fields concludes the paper.

■ Young Author's Conferences have proven a successful and popular vehicle for expanding the writing experiences of elementary school children. In planning the biennial Suncoast Young Author's Conference sponsored by the University of South Florida at Sarasota, we expanded the 1988 Conference to include a separate and concurrent high school program. We invited 75 high school students from Sarasota and Manatee counties to join over 500 elementary school children at the daylong conference held on the Sarasota campus. This article introduces an experimental secondary Young Author's model that may be a useful starting point for educators who wish to implement a similar program.

This survey study explored literacy teacher educators backgrounds as far as diversity is concerned, and the degree to which they include culturally responsive practices in individual courses and across program areas. The International Reading Association (now International Literacy Association) was primarily the data base to solicit respondents. This work was under the auspices of an IRA/ILA Committee called Diversity of Learning.  Some results are encouraging, but overall, response was light, and that not enough is likely being addressed with diversity in teacher education programs. Respondents from urban areas reported more awareness and strategies for preparation with diversity.
