The presence of books is explained in European art of the modern age (15th-16th century) in relation to the profession of the character represented. Surely this is one of the reasons, but the books we see in paintings, sculptures, church decorations tell us much more about the culture of an era, a social group or even a religious order. I have already introduced this topic in a previous article [Studi sull’Oriente Cristiano 24,1(2020), 135-179] speaking of a group of funerary monuments dating back to the period between the end of the XV century and the middle of the XVI century, which had attracted my attention precisely because of the presence of books related to the deceased. I would now like to broaden the discussion on the possible relationship between the iconographies that contain books and the advent of printing. If in the early Renaissance books indicate a return to the great models of the past, already at the end of the XVI century they begin "to generate monsters", they become quintessential symbols of heresy.
