There are many prescriptive learning design models, which attempt to guide teachers to design for learning by taking advantage of digital technologies. This paper argues that more emphasis could be put on design for learning as an informed practice. Four principles are suggested: Designs for learning should be (1) informed by available, relevant and recent resources, (2) continuously reflected upon and evaluated, (3) iteratively improved, and (4) shared, while also emphasizing lessons learned. Teachers should be encouraged to address questions that encourage them to inform their designs for learning, such as: What is known about the learning activity that you are designing? How can resources and your previous experiences be used to inform the design? How can you evaluate the design in order to know how it can be improved? How can your designs and lessons learned be shared with others?

Emotions have been confirmed to be a critical component of the process of learning. In the online Community of Inquiry theoretical framework, and the recently suggested online Relationship of Inquiry framework, emotions are considered a subsection of social presence. In this study, the concept of emotional presence is examined. This examination occurs within the Relationship of Inquiry framework, developed to analyze one-to-one online coaching. A survey of online coaches and a transcript coding procedure from the online coaching service Math Coach provide the data for the study. The results indicate that a Relationship of Inquiry framework consisting of cognitive, social, teaching, and emotional presence enhances the exploration of one-to-one online coaching settings. The interpretation of these results identifies emotional presence as an essential and distinct part of one-to-one online math coaching.

AbstractOne purpose of higher education is to prepare students for a modern and ever-changing global society with increasing complexity and collaborative environments. Scrum is a widely used framework for project management dealing with development of complex products. Few studies have been made on the use of Scrum in higher education. This study examines to what extent distributed Scrum can support online collaborative learning, more exactly what are the advantages and drawbacks on distributed Scrum from a student perspective. Twenty students in an online course has participated in Scrum projects as members in distributed teams. Student’s perceptions was captured using semi-structured interviews. The preliminary results indicate that students are satisfied with Scrum and that they experience a high degree of flexibility. The transparency in Scrum is perceived as a key to open communication and effective collaboration. Keywords: e-learning, online education, Scrum, distributed, colla...

The objective of this chapter is to explore the function that students’ mobile phone use can have, and how the use of mobile phones could be structured in a tenable way, related to school tasks. Hence, we have defined and examined the following research questions: (1) What functions related to school tasks do students and teachers express that mobile phone use can have? (2) How do they express that mobile phone use needs to be structured in school tasks? To explore these questions, we have adopted an activity theoretical perspective and used qualitative methods based on interviews. The results show that the use of mobile phones can offer both supporting functions and functions with considerable tensions related to school tasks. The expressed supportive functions have been categorized as supporting memory, communication, and understanding. Meanwhile, mobile use can be critical because of ethical issues, limited capacity, distraction risks, and cost for students. All teachers and students have agreed that mobile phone use at school must be structured to be used in supportive ways related to school assignments. However, they have expressed different strategies and disagreements about how rules could be applied in school practice.

Contemporary organizations are often permeated by changes that involve decentralization. Organizations’ PR practitioners are consequently searching for communication processes that promote interactivity and employee engagement. The company in this study has implemented an interactive video website in order to internally communicate the company’s core values and to get access to how employees have already implemented the core values in their daily work. The interest for using new technology within organizations has surged as IT infrastructures has improved. Surprisingly, there have been rather few studies on such emerging technologies in organizational settings. In this research-in-progress paper, we explore the impact of the use of an interactive video website, comprising four videos promoting a company’s core values, on employee interactivity and communicative engagement. Two web surveys are being designed for the study. We are also conducting interviews and observations. Here we p...

This paper is a response and considers practical and design implications of the article, The process of designing for learning: understanding university teachers’ design work by Bennett et al. (Educ Technol Res Dev 65:125–145, 2017). Bennett et al. guide us in better understanding teachers’ design practices and in discussions on how such practices could be improved. A key contribution of the article is presenting a descriptive model of the design process. As such, the article is focused on teachers’ current design work, while giving more limited attention to how teachers’ design practice could be improved. When looking forward, this response emphasizes that teachers should be encouraged to inform their designs for learning and iteratively improve their designs based on reflection and evaluation. If teachers take time to look into what is known and deliberately learn more along the way through reflection and evaluation, they will improve their understanding of how to design for learn...

Online tutoring has been found to have a positive impact on student learning in STEM education. The aim of this study was to explore how and to what extent students supported their own and other students' processes of inquiry during online tutoring. More specifically, question and answer sessions (Q&As) were studied, and online tutoring transcripts were analyzed using the Relationship of Inquiry coding scheme adapted from the Community of Inquiry framework. The students interacted voluntarily with each other and with the teachers. The results show that the students supported both their own process of inquiry as well as other students' process of inquiry. Furthermore, the results indicate that students acquired metacognitive development through self- and co-regulation when they expressed teaching presence. Overall, we conclude that Q&As have the potential to support student learning when working on assignments in STEM education.

Initial internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) programs for anxiety disorders in children and young people (CYP) have been developed and evaluated, however these have not yet been widely adopted in routine practice. The lack of guidance and formalized approaches to the development and dissemination of iCBT has arguably contributed to the difficulty in developing iCBT that is scalable and sustainable beyond academic evaluation and that can ultimately be adopted by healthcare providers. This paper presents a consensus statement and recommendations from a workshop of international experts in CYP anxiety and iCBT (#iCBTLorentz Workshop Group) on the development, evaluation, engagement and dissemination of iCBT for anxiety in CYP.
