Cartographic information was highly coveted in sixteenth century Europe, especially when it came from Portugal or Spain. Maps and nautical charts produced in the Iberian Peninsula were loaded with sensitive information about the new lands discovered, which made them the object of desire of rival or curious powers. Faced with this, the Spanish and Portuguese institutions tried to limit the excessive dispersion of cartographic material, using several legislative instruments. In theory, the circulation of cartographic information beyond Iberian imperial boundaries was strictly controlled, so the possibility of leakages or exchanges seemed very unlikely. In practice, both leaks and contact occurred constantly. The objective of this article is to illustrate this idea from the identification and analysis of concrete historical events in which the circulation of cartographic information took place. The chronological framework chosen is the sixteenth century, with Spain, Portugal and Italy as the main sites.

The aim of this article is to analyze in depth the life course of Fray Ignacio Muñoz, a seventeenth-century Dominican friar assigned to the Philippines. Particularly relevant is Muñoz’s use of his scientific knowledge, as he tailored it to the needs of the Spanish empire in order to obtain the patronage of Philip IV. Muñoz’s own handwritten documentation and that produced in response by Spanish institutions are the main sources for the study.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the “Juntas de Badajoz-Elvas”, we propose a workshop to reflect on the novel partitions of power and notions of space that the Iberian kingdoms adopted in the early modern period. More specifically, we expect to discuss how such novel partitions of power and notions of space led to the construction of a “new spatial order”, based on the mathematical and conceptual approach of the Earth as a single, globally encompassable object. For this workshop, we invite scholars of all professional levels—from Ph.D. students and Early Career scholars to senior researchers—and disciplines to contribute on the themes of
· early modern science and technology;
· science and diplomacy in the Early Modern period;
· Iberian science;
· philosophy of geography in the Early Modern period;
· Any other theme related to the above.
Paper presentations will last 20 minutes. Please submit an abstract (max. 250 words) and a short biography (max. 150 words) to globallines2024@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is 15th May, 2024. Acceptances will be delivered no later than 1st June, 2024. The workshop will be held in person, only.
