Previous studies have reported consistent associations between fear of failure and perfectionism in sport. This study investigated how aspects of perfectionism in athletes (N = 350) were related to their fears of failure, and how perfectionism predicted different fears of failure. Structural equation modelling indicated strong correlations between perfectionism and fear of failure, especially on concern over mistakes dimension, reflecting the most negative aspect of the perfectionistic construct. Results concerning the structural model, where perfectionism was a predictor of fear of failure, also showed a positive and significant effect on fear of failure. Specifically, concern over mistakes influences significantly all fears of failure dimensions, followed by doubts about actions dimension. The findings demonstrate that concern over mistakes and doubts about actions are central in the relationship between perfectionism and fear of failure, being both recognized as the core aspects ...

The study of anxiety, specifically its relations with sociodemographic variables, has been fruitfull in sport psychology research. This study aimed to investigate athletes’ sport anxiety regarding differences in gender and sport played. An application of structural equation modeling was made, with 601 Portuguese athletes. From them 172 (28.6%) were female and 429 (71.4%) were male. They competed in a variety of individual (e.g., athletics, climbing, orienteering, surfing, swimming, tennis; 42.6%) and team sports (e.g., basketball, handball, rugby, soccer, volleyball; 57.4%). Participants’ age ranged from 12 to 47 years (M = 17.44 years; SD = 4.99). After testing the measurement invariance of the first and second-order models, across gender and type of sport (individual vs. team), latent mean comparisons were investigated and Cohen’s d (1988) statistic was computed to obtain the corresponding effect sizes (Kline, 2016). Significant differences were detected between male and female at...

Significant differences were detected between male and female athletes and between individual and team sports. Female and individual sports athletes presented higher levels of general sports anxiety. The results of this research provided evidence that anxiety is appraised differently by athletes based on their gender and type of sport.

A career as a surfing coach is a relatively recent profession, and has not yet been the subject of extensive research. The aim of the present study was to investigate the specific sources of knowledge acquisition of surfing coaches. Individual semi-structured open-ended interviews were conducted with 11 expert surfing coaches. Results revealed that their knowledge acquisition was similar in many ways. Their formal higher education provided them with training in sport sciences and physical education pedagogy, as well as their athletes' surfing experiences. Their knowledge base was further developed by acquiring additional information through surfing coaching courses, books, and the use of the Internet.

Summary: Climbing is a sport that has grown considerably in popularity and as well in the number of athletes. The aim of this research was to synthetize and providean analysis on climbing investigations trough an systematic research, attending to the last 10 years of scientific publications. The research was made on B-on, provided unlimited and permanent access available, within the research and higher education institutions, to full texts from over 16,750 scientific international publications from 16 publishers, through subscriptions negotiated on a national basis with these publishers. After application of the exclusion criterions, 25 articles were analysed and included in the systematic review. The majority of the articles are cross-sectional studies e some of them with small male samples.

–– The Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI) is a multidimensional measure of threat appraisals associated with one's fear of failure. Whilst emerging research has supported the validity and reliability of the PFAI with North American and British sport participants, its psychometric proprieties remain untested within Portuguese samples. This study examined the psychometric proprieties of the PFAI with a sample of 556 Portuguese athletes. A confirmatory factor analysis was employed to test whether the proposed multi-factorial structure of the PFAI fits well the Portuguese data. All factors displayed good internal consistency, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Multi-group analysis revealed cross-validity and the models' invariance. The correlations between fear of failure and sport anxiety measures revealed evidence of its concurrent validity. The PFAI appears to be a psychometrically sound measure and a valid and reliable tool for assessing fear of failure in Portuguese sport contexts.

Nowadays, appropriately designed and proficiently monitored physical conditioning is widely regarded as a safe and effective method for developing schoolchildren´s health-related physical fitness.
However, changes in fear of failure and in physical self-concept levels of school students due to an intervention of a fitness program are limited and sparse. The purpose of this study was to assess the short-term effect of a physical fitness program on fear of failure, physical self-concept and physical fitness elements among school students.
This was an experimental 8-week program developed in Physical Education (PE) classes. A sample of one hundred and nine students, randomly divided in four groups (6th grade control: M = 10.8 years, SD = 0.48; 15M/12F; 6th grade experimental: M = 10.86 years, SD = 0.45; 13M/15F; 8th grade control: M = 13.12 years, SD = 0.60; 16M/9F; and 8th grade experimental: M = 12.93 years, SD = 0.53; 15M/14F), participated in this study. Fear of failure (Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory), physical self-concept (Physical Self-Description Questionnaire) and physical fitness (FITESCOLA battery tests) were measured at the beginning and at the end of the physical fitness program. Descriptive and inferential analyses were made to identify possible differences across time and groups.
Main results highlight an improvement in physical fitness in both groups, being more sensitive in the experimental group. Regarding fear of failure and physical self-concept, no significant differences were found across time in both groups. However, in the control group, general fear of failure was strongly and positively correlated with several fitness scores, at the post-intervention evaluation. Physical self-concept did not present significant associations with fitness tests scores.
Results presented in this study pointed to a) the importance of a short term physical fitness programs organized as a circuit in physical educational classes, b) an association between fear of failure and fitness testing scores and c) a negatively association between fear of failure and perceived self-concept. Physical Education teachers should be acquainted of these issues when planning activities and in-class fitness programs.

Fear of failure is conceptualized as the motive to avoid failure in evaluative situations, associated with anticipatory shame and with the tendency to appraise threat. Sport represents a significant achievement and evaluative domain, where concerns about performance failure are the most prevalent sources of stress for all athletes. This narrative review sought to explore the origin of the fear of failure construct and his development in a sport context. Research findings provide corroboration of the prevalence of problems attributed to high fear of failure among athletes in achievement settings, making it an imperative issue that cannot be overlooked. Consequentially, specific directions for future research regarding fear of failure constructs in sport are presented.
