עדכון חילוני-ציוני לצאינה וראינה: עיון בדרשותיו של דוד כהן

המאמר מתחקה אחר התרומה החלוצית לספרות הדרוש של איש החינוך דוד כהן (1894–1976). כמו שנראה להלן, דרשותיו היו הגות יהודית-חילונית, שהיא פרי מזיגה בין עולמות סוציאליסטיים חילוניים לבין העולם הדתי. מיזוג זה קיבל את ביטויו בכתיבה דרשנית על פרשת השבוע או בהשראתה, שפורסמה בעלון קיבוץ אלונים. ננתח להלן את דרשותיו, שהן מקרה פרטי של תופעה יהודית-תרבותית בקרב התנועה הקיבוצית, שטרם זוהה במחקר. עיון זה הוא חוליה מקשרת בין המחקר העשיר שנכתב על הוגי הציונות החילונית לבין תשומת הלב המחקרית שֶלה זוכה החילוניות הלמדנית המתחדשת. ביטויה הראשוני של חילוניות זו היה פעילות "חוג שדמות", אשר בשנות השישים והשבעים המוקדמות ליכד בצוותא צעירים נלהבים ללמוד יהדות.  חברי החוג נחשפו לכתבי החסידות של הרב קוק, של מרטין בובר, של גרשם שלום ושל אחרים, וחוו בעקבות מפגש זה התעוררות רוחנית ותרבותית.
"חוג שדמות" היה בעל השפעה מעטה בטווח הקצר, אולם הייתה לו השפעה רוחנית רבה בטווח הארוך, והיא הובילה להקמתן ולשגשוגן של מסגרות חילוניות ללימודי יהדות. במאמר הזה נראה שהחוג לא צמח ברִיק, שכן בתנועה הקיבוצית התקיימה עוד קודם לכן שדרה תרבותית-יהודית-למדנית, שהייתה חלק בלתי נפרד ממנה ומן התהליכים הרוחניים שבקרבה. יש להבין את הגותם של בני "דור הביניים" בתנועה הקיבוצית, אשר נולדו מימי העלייה הראשונה ועד ראשית המנדט הבריטי בארץ ישראל (1881–1917), על רקע ההגות היהודית-הציונית, שפרחה בשנים אלו, כדוגמת זו של מיכה יוסף ברדיצ'בסקי, של יוסף חיים ברנר, של אחד העם, של חיים נחמן ביאליק ושל אהרן דוד גורדון.  מִטבע הדברים, זוהי תשתית שאי אפשר להתעלם ממנה. ואולם, דור ביניים זה, שעמו נמנה דוד כהן, לא שִחזר את הגותם של קודמיהם, אלא יצר מהלך תרבותי-יהודי ייחודי ושונה מקודמיו. מהלך זה נשכח, נבלע וטושטש עם פריצת "חוג שדמות" ותנועות השיבה אל היהדות, ובכוונתנו להאירוֹ לראשונה במאמר הזה.

A secular Zionist Revision of "Tsene U'r'ene": Reading David Cohen's Homilies
The current study describes the secular Zionist movement's addition to the derash literature through the writings of David Cohen (1894-1976). I wish to argue that his writings conflate his socialist secular milieu with his religious upbringing. This fusion informed his homilies on the weekly Torah portion, Which were published locally on his kibbutz.
The paper opens with a brief description of the derash literature and how it was affected by modernity, Followed by a presentation of relevant theoretical hermeneutical paradigms, including the translation of canonical texts for a modern audience.
The main section deals with the writings of David Cohen, who was known as "the father of HaNoar HaOved." It shows how Cohen devoted his life to working with underprivileged youth, while writing homilies in a mixed style that combined Histadrut ideology, Hassidic lore, and the "Tsene U'r'ene" format.
Gad Opaz's premise that the Shedemot group had to break through a screen of silence and repression reflects a misconception of Cohen's generation's engagement with a secular Jewish outlook. The current study sheds new light on this matter and suggests that Opaz's premise may have been too general.

This issue of PaRDeS, the journal of the German Association for Jewish Studies, looks at various aspects of the transformative impact of translations in Jewish history and culture. Sacred texts as the Bible and the Zohar, Yiddish versions of medieval romance literature, the Zionist politics of translations, and the translation of Jewish cemeteries in Morocco are some topics of the articles.

Miriam's and Youssef's biographies feature the full spectrum of Jewish and Arab political movements, both hawkish and dovish. [...]although unitary by plot structure, Miriam and Youssef's paralleling biographies are superimposed, creating a fabricated multiplicity. Musical Narrative: scanning the musical tracks created for the series makes the creator's honest attempt to equate the hopes and suffering of Palestinian and Jew immediately evident.8 A more in-depth inspection of the track titles and musical profiles yields more complex inferences. The juxtaposition of the pogrom with the massacre at Deir Yassin emphasizes that both Jews and Arabs have their share of woe. [...]the Jewish sorrow is narrated by a Klezmer-style clarinet over accordion in a tune titled "Geyn in troyer" (meaning to go into mourning, or wear mourning clothes; Yiddish); throughout the series, the same tune is used to induce or suggest the pogrom and all that it represents politically and dramatically. The choice of the accordion in both diatonic and micro tuned forms is a facilitator for the musical message of unity; it is a standard element in Eastern European folk music, and by extension in the world of klezmer, and was likewise widely accepted into urban Arab music during the later 20th century. [...]in Miriam and Youssef, the accordion represents both the Palestinian and Israeli narratives, both separately and also by fusion.
