Building conservation is an increasingly important concept in today’s fast-developing era. The word “conservation” alone refers to the guardianship of buildings from being lost, wasted, damaged or destroyed. However, conservation generates multiple issues in its work making it difficult and unfavourable. This paper explores the issues faced in Malaysia’s first conservation project of the Syed Alatas Mansion. The case study of the Syed Alatas Mansion is conducted via an interview session with the Assistant Manager and reference to documentary sources. The research has identified three categories of major issues in the conservation of the Syed Alatas Mansion i.e. technical, organisational and economic issues that has been described in detail. This
research has put forward some recommendations to remedy the described situation.

Swiftlet hotels have become increasingly popular in the real estate industry today due to its high return on investment (ROI). This research has proven that a standard 20 x 70 feet shop is able to generate a net income of approximately RM10,000 to RM20,000 per month from sales of 2 to 4 kg bird nests. In about 15 months, a three storey shop house with a base value of RM360, 000 could appreciate up to RM750, 000 in market value after being converted into a swiftlet hotel. These prospects have attracted investors to invest in higher and taller birds' hotel in order to generate more bird nests hence higher income. This paper highlighted the risks and opportunities in swiftlet farming as a business investment and arranged them in a well structured perspective for the benefits of potential investors. Questionnaire survey and structured interviews were used as the research methodology. Findings revealed that although swiftlet farming has high risks, most investors receive a return on ...

In this paper, the authors evaluated the implementation of a Project Based Learning (ProjBL) incorporating the development of students' soft skills as well as technical or professional competences. The research question addressed here is the suitability of ProjBL in achieving the desired learning outcomes i.e. practical knowledge of engineering surveying, basic knowledge on engineering design, and soft skills or personal competences. The objectives are two-fold; (i) to evaluate the effectiveness, and (ii) to identify potential improvement. The course, the Engineering Surveying Camp offered at Year-I of a four-year civil engineering degree programme, is a two-week field course. During the course, the students carried out an actual surveying and design project in groups of 6-7 students supervised by the academics. Assessment of technical aspects was based on daily output and final products while for soft skills on performance during the various sessions. Evaluation was carried out...

The use of environmental planning tools for optimum solid waste landfill siting taking into account all environmental implications was carried out by applying Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to enhance the research information obtained from initial analysis using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The objective of this study is to identify the most eco-friendly landfill site by conducting a LCA analysis upon 5 potential GIS generated sites which incorporated eleven important criteria related to the social, environmental, and economical factors. The LCA analysis utilized the daily distance covered by collection trucks among the 5 selected landfill sites to generate inventory data on total energy usage for each landfill sites. The planning and selection of the potential sites were facilitated after conducting environmental impact analysis upon the inventory data which showed the least environmental impact. Tourism is increasingly viewed as an attractive development option for many parts of the developing world. In some developing nations, it may in fact be the only visible means of stimulating development. Developing nations are seeking the potential benefits of tourism, such as increased income, foreign exchange, employment and economic diversification, nevertheless, these developmental benefits may in fact fail to materialize if not well planned and executed. More to this, that is, the number of people or tourists participation in tourism has grown, so too has the number of countries that play host to tourists. Based on the above facts, Akwa Ibom State Government decided to put in place some Tourist recreation facilities not only for the benefit of her indigenes but also for Local and International Tourists at large. This paper seeks to apply Cartography and GIS Technology in mapping out Tourist facilities in Uyo Capital Territory in order to foster positive and negative contributio...

Scarcity of land for waste disposal in most large urban areas is one of the serious and growing potential problems nowadays. Even though there are some efforts to reduce and recover the waste, land filling is still the most common method for waste destination. Landfill site selection in urban areas is a critical issue due to its huge impact on the economy, ecology, and the environmental health. Therefore, numerous criteria must be considered and the selection process is a complicated since it has to integrate social, environmental and technical parameters. In this study, the most suitable candidate sites for locating landfill in Klang District, as a case study area are determined by using an integration of the Geographical Information System (GIS) and Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method. For this purpose, eleven input map layers are prepared and two different MCDM methods which are Weighted Linear Combination (WLC) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) are implemented to G...
