Bu çalışmada, korku sinemasının sıklıkla katil ya da canavar olarak isimlendirilen bitkilerine, insan-bitki hibridlerine, Michael Marder’ın bitki düşünüşü ve bitkisel ontoloji üzerine ilham verici kitabı Plant-Thinking: A Philosophy of Vegetal Life [Bitki-Düşünüşü: Bir Bitkisel Yaşam Felsefesi] ile beraber açılmak, böylelikle bu bitkilere ev sahipliği eden 1960-1980 arasında çekilmiş bir dizi film aracılığıyla sinemada bitkisel olan ile karşılaşmanın etik ve estetik imkanları üzerine tefekkürde bulunmak amaçlanmaktadır.

This study explores the plants and plant-human hybrids of horror cinema, which are often called killers or monsters, through the lens of Michael Marder's inspirational book Plant-Thinking: A Philosophy of Vegetal Life, on vegetal ontology and plant thinking. To that end, it discusses the ethical and aesthetic possibilities of encountering the vegetal in cinema through a series of plant horror films shot between 1960 and 1980. These films, regarded as B movies, may be considered as inclining toward the vegetal themselves, not just because these films are about plants, but because their production and distribution preferences are open to the environment. Regardless of their intentions, these films-through their formal preferences, which do not reduce plants to a mere aesthetic object or object of fear to be defeated-allow us to see what is monstrous not only in monster plants but also in plants themselves. And in doing so, they invite us to encounter the vegetal and be somewhat plant-like ourselves.

“Haneke Sinemasının Yaralanabilir Seyircisi” başlıklı bu tez çalışmasında, Avusturyalı yönetmen Michael Haneke’nin filmleri, seyirci, film ve yönetmen arasında etik bir alan açma ve seyirciyi “yaralanabilir” kılma olanakları üzerinden tartışılmıştır. Kullanım şekli her bir disiplinin değişen ihtiyaçlarına göre farklılık gösteriyorsa da yaralanabilirlik, birçok farklı disiplinde önemli bir araştırma alanı olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Yaralanabilirlik kavramını, yalnızca eşitsiz refah dağılımına ve güvencesizleştirilenlere işaret eden negatif içerimleri ile değil, yaşamın müşterek bir koşulu, bedenlerimizin karşılıklı tabiiyeti ve açıklığı olarak da ele alan Judith Butler’ın yaralanabilirlik üzerine çalışmaları, özellikle sosyal bilimler alanında kavramın daha yaygın bir şekilde kullanılmasına yol açmıştır. Buna rağmen film çalışmalarında yaralanabilirlik konusunda yapılan çalışmalar sınırlı sayıdadır ve bu çalışmaların büyük çoğunluğu, yaralanabilir karakterlerin temsiline odaklanmaktadır. Önceki çalışmalardan farklı olarak, bu çalışmada yaralanabilirlik, seyircinin bedenlenmiş seyir deneyimi ile ilişkisi üzerinden, yaralanabilirin temsilinden seyirci yaralanabilirliğine ve formun kırılganlığına tahvil edilerek tartışmaya açılmıştır.

Bunun için öncelikle, bu çalışmada ortaya atılan “yaralanabilir seyirci” kavramının hem seyircilik hem de yaralanabilirlik alanındaki kuramsal dayanakları detaylı bir şekilde tartışılmıştır. Yaralanabilir seyirci üzerine düşünmeyi mümkün kılan üç seyircilik modeli (klasik, bedenlenmiş, etik) karşılıklı diyaloğa sokulmuştur. Bedenlenmiş seyircilik kuramları ve film fenomenolojisinin, yaralanabilirlik ile seyircilik tartışmalarını bir arada düşünebilmek adına önemli bir imkan yarattığı düşünüldüğü için bu kuramın seyirci tasavvurunun, etik bir seyirciliğe nasıl alan açtığı ve klasik seyircilik kuramının seyircisi ile arasında ne gibi kopuş ve süreklilikler barındırdığı ele alınmıştır. Çalışmanın yaralanabilirliğe ayrılan bölümündeyse, Butler’ın kurucu toplumsallık, yaralanabilirlik ve çerçeve tartışmaları yakından incelenmiş, bu tartışmaların film çalışmaları ve seyircilik üzerine düşünebilmek adına barındırdığı potansiyel değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Haneke sinemasının yaralanabilir seyircisi ve Haneke’nin, seyirciyi yaralanabilir kıldığı iddia edilebilecek biçimsel tercihlerinin ele alındığı son bölümde ise, Haneke sinemasındaki gibi formun kırılganlaştırıldığı bir seyir deneyiminin, bizatihi seyirciyi yaralanabilirliğe açan bir tecrübe olduğuna, bu tecrübenin seyirci için kendi bedenlenmişliği, yaralanabilirliği ve yaralanabilirliğin eşitsiz dağılımı üzerine bir tefekkür imkanı doğurabileceğine işaret edilmiştir.

New extremist cinema seems like do not hesitate to cast a “black mark” on the aesthetic of art-cinema and cooperate with a wide variety of “weak” genres such as gore, porn, melodrama, and horror. It’s seen that the relationship of such films with their excessive predecessors is often discussed over their contribution to the hybridization of art-cinema and to underline the ethical potential of these new unwatchable, feel-bad films.

In this study, how the works of “old” extremist Doris Wishman who embrace negative affects by avoiding taming them and transferring them not only to her films but also to her filmmaking practice differ from her successors who instrumentalize negative affects with a generally explicit pedagogical, intellectual, political cause will be discussed. And it’ll be argued that Wishman’s filmography has a unique ethical and affective potential, if not in the way that the new extremist cinema promises.

By not taking herself seriously and not investing much in complete, consistent end-product, Wishman keeps her films open both in the making and in the viewing process. Especially during the production and post-production stages, her films, which don’t rely solely on the director's intentions, where coincidences, failures, unconscious or forced preferences and unforeseen alliances come to the fore, are a complex assemblage rather than being a channel through which the director will pass her message to the audience. Wishman's cinema, which is entangled with the environment that it settled, with its openness and curiosity towards those that interrupt the narrative and those that don’t fit into the narrative creates an area of irreducible, unpredictable, relational, and playful negative affective field. To explore this field, I’ll discuss the negative affect politics inherent in Wishman's films by making use of the discussions of queer theorists, especially Judith Halberstam and Sara Ahmed, on failure and negative affect.

This paper briefly discusses marriage and family in relation to Islam in contemporary Turkey by using different scientific indicators. According to research findings, there is a dilemma between being a (religious) Muslim and supporting sharia and religious court in terms of family and property matters in Turkish society. On the one hand, vast majority of couples had both official (civil) and religious marriage and majority of the society does not support having and living babies out of wedlock. On the other hand, very few of spouses sought “clergymen” for help, when there is a conflict between spouses. Besides, there is a significant amount of evidence which shows that a considerable amount of Turkish “Muslim” citizens challenge Islamic rules by supporting sperm and egg bank and letting Muslim women to marry to non-Muslim men. Nevertheless, there is not enough evidence to say that Turkish society does or does not consider Islam for every aspect of marriage and family life. Thus, this paper suggests that there is need for further research on the relationships among Islam, marriage and family in contemporary Turkish society from various disciplines in order to cover different dimensions of the topic and reach strong conclusions.

What influence Alevi-Sunni intermarriage has on spouses’ individual religious affiliation after marriage was the initial research question addressed in this study. No official or unofficial data exist regarding the Alevi-Sunni intermarriage in Turkey. This study responded to the need to describe extant relationships by using a qualitative approach to gather detailed information from a sample of married couples in Corum city, Turkey. A case study method was applied to a sample of ten couples. Couples were selected using snowball and purposive sampling techniques. A team of researchers conducted forty face-to-face interviews. Each of the ten husbands and ten wives in Alevi-Sunni intermarriages were interviewed twice using semi-structured questionnaires. Additional demographic and observational data were gathered.
