The essay is a study on Francesco Paglia’s youth. Despite Pagliai was a renowned scholar of Foscolo’s Le Grazie, almost nothing was known about his friendships with Giovanni Papini, Ardengo Soffici, Dino Campana and with Giuseppe De Robertis, his war experience shared with Camillo Sbarbaro, his imprisonment, Giovanni Gentile’s support, and about his contribution, to the Italian cultural life during the post WWI. Through a first hand documentary
research the study unveils the story of an uncommon youth.

This essay addresses the problematic idea of spiritual love in
Ugo Foscolo’s Inni alle Grazie within the social, cultural and literary context
of the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century.
The essay considers the conjugal symbolism of the Graces in both Foscolo’s
poem and Canova’s sculpture, Foscolo’s interpretation of Petrarch’s
love and the way in which Foscolo transcends the dichotomy of sensual
and terrestrial love. Finally it is suggested a semantic equivalence between
the ideas of spiritual love and harmony in Foscolo’s work.

My paper focuses on the relationships between two works of Ugo Foscolo: Le Grazie and the Discorso sul testo e sulle opinioni diverse prevalenti intorno alla storia e alla emendazione critica della Commedia di Dante written during his exile in London. Given the hypothesis that Le Grazie are pivotal in Foscolo’s work, I demonstrate how the literary and aesthetic thought concerning the poem is preponderant in Foscolo’s criticism of Dante, while, in turn, his critical work of Dante allows a deeper understanding of some issues concerning the Graces.

The present essay points out the influences of Niccolò Machiavelli thoughts in the political, religious and literary ideas of Ugo Foscolo. One could easily trace Machiavelli’s presence on Foscolo’s works regarding either the necessity of a Church renovation; the theorization of a stronger and renovated connection between the state and a merely Italian Church, or the dispute against the pushover literates. However Foscolo was more deeply influenced by Machiavelli’s concepts of religion as a political and social bond as well as of the belief that eloquence is fundamental for a correct political education. Indeed, from Chioma di Berenice to Le Grazie, Foscolo developed a new genre of poetry linked with the sacred and the political, conceived as a tool to learn the moral and civil values which characterized social life. Consequently, the result is an original portrait of Foscolo: Ugo Foscolo as the ideal reader of Machiavelli’s works as a symbol of praising the civilizing power of literature and in the dream of a tolerant humanity.

It examines the variants of 8 sonnets of Vita Nova (Vede perfettamente onne salute, Ne li occhi porta la mia donna Amore, Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare, Con l’altre donne mia vista gabbate, Era venuta ne la mente mia) in the textual form of the extravagant tradition i.e. e, and it compares the readings of the extravagant tradition with the ones of the organic tradition i.e. VN. Its aim is to shed light on Dante’s lyrical work and on the poetic values that he was gradually discovering in his poetry. The essay attempts to find the motivations of the variants, which may be explained by the need for greater stylistic and thematic coherence with the poetic contents and the narrative frame of Vita Nova. Lastly, it tries to establish whether some variants from the extravagant tradition may be considered authorial variants.

Heart, Gestures and Emotions in the 19th century three Crowns
organizer: Daniela Shalom Vagata (Masaryk University)
Following SIS 2023 themed conference, Affect Emotion Sensation, the panel Heart, Gestures and Emotions in the 19th century three Crowns intends to investigate the representation of emotions in Ugo Foscolo’s, Giacomo Leopardi’s and Alessandro Manzoni’s work. At the turn of the 19th century a new sensibility towards the individual’s emotions and its visual manifestation can be observed. Foscolo’s interest on the notion of grace, as well as a Manzoni’s attention on the gestures of his characters in Promessi sposi are just few examples of this new attitude. The panel together with the one proposed by Maria Silvia Marini’s Asking for Justice Rage, hope, imagination: “sense of justice” in the late modern Italian literature, aims to bring new attention on 19th century Italian writers inside the Italian studies in UK and Ireland.
Papers may include but not limited to the following topics, and despite the main focus is on 19th century three Crowns, the papers are not restricted only to Foscolo’s, Leopardi’s and Manzoni’s work:
Representation of body and gestures in the 19th Italian literature, especially in Foscolo’s, Leopardi’s and Manzoni’s work
«Solo il cuor m’è maestro»: the symbolism of the heart and its connections with the writers’s idea of literature
Drawing, painting, acting interpreted as a physical translation of emotions
Senses as the gateway of phycological introspections of feelings
Modern and antique sources of Foscolo, Leopardi and Manzoni’s representation of emotions
Asking for Justice
Rage, hope, imagination: “sense of justice” in the late modern Italian literature
organizer: Maria Silvia Marini (Università di Roma La Sapienza)
The reflection on “justice” runs throughout the course of human history. One of the most interesting periods, in this sense, was the late modern age: both in Europe and in Italy, the “sense of justice” emerges from a multitude of different reflections. In Italy, at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Italian intellectual world questioned the meaning of war, the human costs of industrial progress, human rights and the confrontation between peoples. This happens in conjunction with a new consideration of the imaginative faculty, which assumes a role no longer ancillary to reason, but decisive. This “rediscovery” of imagination implied a re-evaluation of the embodied dimension of knowledge, determining a new, different approach to the human nature considered as a whole. We can find evidence of this tendency mainly in Giacomo Leopardi, but also in the writings of Foscolo and Manzoni. How, then, is it possible to reconnect the question of justice with the embodied conception of human nature? What did it meant to introduce the notion of imagination in the discussion about justice? What was gained by studying the role of imagination in thinking about justice? Did a focus on imagination imply a change in the principle-centred approaches of the time? And, if so, how?
The panel – together with the one proposed by Daniela Shalom Vagata’s Heart, Gestures and Emotions in the 19th century three Crowns – aims to bring new attention to 19th century Italian writers inside the Italian Studies in UK and Ireland. The panel encourages proposals on the broad topic of justice between 18th and 19th centuries, starting with (but not limited to) a focus on Leopardi, Foscolo, and Manzoni’s reflections.
Possible dimensions affected by the topic are:
- Linguistic justice
- Colonization, diversity
- Social justice
- Critique of anthropocentrism
Women rights
