Recovery is as a “process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” (SAMHSA 2012) This is a direction for those who are ready to recover, or to help others live a life worth meaning.  This is an outline for those who seek to regain or maintain sanity and wellness in a context of holistic wellness.  Let us examine recovery by the numbers, and form a solution information base for the sick, and struggling who may become inspired toward recovery based living.  If human and social capital can be leveraged to help others recover let us provide support for our peers and share with them.  It is part of the human condition that we need the support and encouragement of others to become content with life, and to feel connected.

The literature concerns the advent of recovery in America.  Special attention is given to the “Philly Model” which is historically center stage for recovery and the popular person-centered, and strength based addictions paradigm development.  The recovery revolution has undergone various movements from disease concept to recovery orientated systems of care (ROSC) over the last 200 years.
Philadelphia has been center stage for addiction treatment and recovery in America. Dr. Benjamin Rush (1746-1813) is the father of the “disease concept of chronic drunkenness and the call for the creation of special institutions for the care of the inebriate. (White, 2007)  White relates that “Philadelphia’s Franklin Reformatory Home for Inebriates (founded 1872) was among the most prominent of early inebriate homes and asylums” (White, 2007).  There was always a trailblazer in Philly and when “A lay alcoholism therapy movement rose in the early twentieth century, Philadelphia was again distinguished by the collaboration of lay alcoholism therapist Francis Chambers and noted psychiatrist Dr. Edward Strecker at the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital.” (White, 2007)  White argues that “Chambers’ acceptance as an interdisciplinary team member in one of the nation’s most prominent psychiatric hospitals”, is an important paradigm change, “in the professionalization of addiction counseling. (White, 1998)” (White, 2007)

The following visuals are part of an art based therapy referred to as khamdalas.  Khamdalas are used in KASM cognitive therapies for the relief of mental distress and overall wellness.  These particular khamdalas have emerged from the mind of Shaykh Hamzah Alameen and are archetypes reconstructed from his visions.  They are extremely useful in the therapeutic counseling of African Americans affected by racism and also racist minded people of any color.
The African American mind is often psychologically damaged because of the arduous journey from slavery to the present time.  The mind often represses traumas that are specific to our cultural experiences.  These repressed thoughts produce heritable subconscious diseased mental states and affect our daily lives oftentimes unknowingly. It was noticed that African Americans in counseling related painful imagery and experiences that were unexplainable since it was not part of their waking life.  It is believed that knowledge of slavery and oppression has caused psychic damage and painful filled memories.  Social media, folk tales, superstitions, and stereotypes can stimulate negative thinking and produce abnormal maladaptive behaviors.

This is a fiction set in Harlem, New York's Sugar hill section of Washington Heights.  The story is set in the late 70's and tells of how Black teens played, dated and showed their bravery through "the dare game".  The name "tar beach" is a nickname for the roofs of tenements.  It is on tar beach were the all too dangerous dare game is payed.  This is a great story for analysis of the effects of cultural games on the thinking of youth.  This story depicts what was the bold invulnerable state of mind of many inner city youths of that era,

When disaster strikes first responders are most effective when they understand the dynamics of the communities in which they serve.  American communities are anything but typical.  In many cities people from a hundred cultures share the same social living area. Knowledge concerning the people in the community aids responders who contact culturally diverse homes often tasked with providing lifesaving human services delivery.  The following tips are designed to aid first respondents, disaster counselors, and chaplains, in their job of providing human services especially in populations with high Muslim density.  Remember in all circumstances the NIMS and ICS protocols, especially concerning, communication, representation, and decision making are our required standards.

Open 10pt. Plan for Systemic Social Change of Racist Police Departments b/c #blacklifematters, # " We Can't Breathe! "
Racism oppresses its victims, but also binds the oppressors, who sear their consciences with more and more lies until they become prisoners of those lies. They cannot face the truth of human equality because it reveals the horror of the injustices they commit. Alveda King
Oh my People, we have to act now because our lives depend on it. Act now because we can no longer tolerate the unjustified execution of Black and Brown, and indigenous people. The mass incarceration of over 2 million of our people, and the recent killings of our youth has emboldened us into action. As an Elder of the African American people it is incumbent that this plan be forged since all must contribute to this movement to fundamentally bring an end to the racist incarceration and extermination of our youth. We have witnessed too many police killings of our children and we hear the lamentations of their mothers weeping in the night for the slaughter of Black innocents because of the slave catcher mentalities of members of some of our justice departments and police agencies. We Can Not Breathe because this disease like phenomena called racism, has become institutionalized in the American criminal justice system The Plan (The Basics of Freedom for the Oppressed) 1. We must come together… All oppressed people (Black, Brown, Latino, Muslims, Mexicans, and other indigenous people) and all those sympathetic, we must ban together nationally and focus our strengths in a combined voice that cannot be silenced without justice. Our combined effort will be of greater magnitude when we come together aligned for change and transformation of the racist police departments that promote a murderous culture which endangers #blacklivesmatter; therefore know that our success lies in our ability to rise to the call of unified struggle. 2. We must collaborate and adopt one main vision… We must see that the main vision is change of the racist mass incarceration, and police tactics which threaten the public safety and existence of our people. The idea that people of color cannot organize and rally around a central theme is ignorant and rejected. We are able to support our common vision and plan strategies that will eventually eliminate the racism.
