Using Shelly Kagan's notion of a normative focal point, I contrast dào ethics with the two prominent Western rivals: law ethics and virtue ethics. I argue that a dào ethics has the advantage over law ethics in having naturalism as the default metaethics. A dào path is not a volitional command of some authority, including supernatural and idealized or purely rational hypothetical wills. It is an empirically accessible guiding structure found in the natural world. And a dào ethics had the advantage over virtue ethics that it does not devolve into conservative "entrenched" virtue terminology. A correct dé (virtuosity) is skill at finding and following natural norm guidance, not a freestanding traditional way of praising historical models. Here, Daoism and Confucianism part ways. Confucianism is torn between conservativism (following ancient models) and a free-standing claim of special psychological or attitudinal access to correct behavior (Mencius). Daoism is more skeptical and perspectival and appreciates the variety of natural ways of choosing and following natural possibilities for behavior--natural ways.

In this chapter, I address human rights as an illustration of the role of comparative ethics in normative reasoning. In Section I, I distinguish comparative ethics from related intellectual enterprises inside and outside philosophy and discuss the difficulties of a comparative conception of morality. In Section II, I argue that the normative relevance of comparative studies is subtle and indirect. It flows out of three conditions of normative respect. I argue that these apply in the case of a Chinese– Western comparison but do not warrant treating all traditions as equals. These conditions underlie the appeal of a “synthesis of East and West” and illustrate the limited normative relevance of comparative ethics. I argue that any envisioned synthesis must come from continued moral discourse within the distinct normative traditions themselves. Comparativists may inform the traditions about each other and thus stimulate moral discourse but may not otherwise “guide” or adjudicate the sha...
