No trecho 400c1-9 do Cratilo, Socrates faz algumas afirmacoes etimologicas a respeito do termo ‘co... more No trecho 400c1-9 do Cratilo, Socrates faz algumas afirmacoes etimologicas a respeito do termo ‘corpo’ (σῶμα): 1) que e o tumulo (σῆμά) da alma, 2) que e por intermedio dele que a alma significa (σημαίνeι) e 3) que e como um recinto(πeρίβολον) onde a alma e conservada(σῴζηται), a imagem de uma prisao (δeσμωτηρίου eἰκόνα). Neste artigo, pretendo examinar separadamente cada uma dessas etimologias, a fim de explorar nao apenas os seus aspectos concernentes ao tema da separacao entre corpo e alma, mas tambem as suas consequencias para a relacao entre o nome e aquilo que ele designa - tema mais especifico ao contexto dialogico em que as referidas etimologias se inserem.
No passo 262d1-3 do diálogo Político de Platão, o Estrangeiro de Eleia adverte seu jovem interloc... more No passo 262d1-3 do diálogo Político de Platão, o Estrangeiro de Eleia adverte seu jovem interlocutor a respeito daquilo que, segundo ele, constitui um erro comum entre os atenienses: “tomar a raça helena por uma unidade distinta de todo o resto, ao passo que ao conjunto das outras raças (que são inúmeras, distintas umas das outras e não falam a mesma língua), atribuir uma designação única, bárbaros”. Além da evidente crítica ao etnocentrismo de tal hábito, perpassa a fala da personagem outro tema politicamente relevante, a saber, o problema das concepções envolvidas em cada designação que por costume utilizamos. Esse é, aliás, um assunto recorrente nos dois diálogos platônicos protagonizados pelo Estrangeiro de Eleia: em que medida as palavras correspondem às coisas designadas? Até que ponto podemos confiar em nossa linguagem comum ao empreendermos uma investigação? Que compreensões estão embutidas nos nomes que empregamos? This article aims to provide a small contribution to that debate by showing how and why Protagoras and Heraclitus can be seen as the candidates for those unspoken adversaries in this context.
No passo 487b do sexto livro da República, Adimanto interrompe a fala de Sócrates com uma espécie... more No passo 487b do sexto livro da República, Adimanto interrompe a fala de Sócrates com uma espécie de desafio, exposto, grosso modo, da seguinte forma: os fatos mostram que os que se dedicaram à filosofia quando eram novos, e persistiram nesses estudos, tornaram-se, ou bem perversos, ou bem inúteis para a cidade; seria possível defender a filosofia de tal acusação? As duas acusações apontadas por Adimanto, inutilidade e perversidade, podem ser utilizadas, não por acaso, para resumir as características do Sócrates aristofânico de Nuvens. O presente artigo se propõe a desenvolver algumas possíveis relações entre a famosa comédia de Aristófanes e a defesa socrática que se segue ao desafio de Adimanto, que ocupa boa parte do Livro VI da República platônica.

Cet article à deux voix reprend le débat sur le célèbre « retournement » du chœur des Nuées (v. 1... more Cet article à deux voix reprend le débat sur le célèbre « retournement » du chœur des Nuées (v. 1452-1464), notamment l’idée selon laquelle il propose une version comique de la théodicée eschyléenne de l’apprentissage par la souffrance (cf. Newiger, Rau, Zimmermann). Dans une première partie, nous situons le retournement du chœur dans le cadre du paradigme tragique qui structure de façon cohérente l’intrigue de la comédie, afin de montrer qu’il produit un effet de mise à distance par rapport aux événements dramatiques, en permettant à la comédie de se soustraire aux faits représentés. À partir de là, nous proposons une lecture du retournement des Nuées comme moment culminant de l’intrigue, qui voit coïncider « renversement » (peripeteia) et « reconnaissance » (anagnorisis), selon la formulation aristotélicienne à propos de la meilleure tragédie (Poétique, chapitre 11). Dans les conclusions, nous esquissons une nouvelle lecture de la scène de l’incendie de l’école de Socrate par laquelle finit la comédie.
