I hold a position as a Senior Scientist (PostDoc) at the Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Material Culture (IMAREAL), University of Salzburg. My research interests are Central European urban history, material culture, economic and administrative structures in the late Middle Ages with a focus on the civic elites in the Austrian duchy and the Bohemian kingdom. Currently, I am co-editor of the open access journal MEMO – Medieval and Early Modern Material Culture Online: holds a position as a Senior Scientist (PostDoc) at the Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Material Culture (IMAREAL), University of Salzburg. Nach den Dingen in der Stadt zu fragen, beinhaltet ein Erkenntnisinteresse, das weit über die Frage nach Präsenz und Sichtbarkeit, nach Verfügbarkeit von Konsumgütern, Identität stiftenden Zeichen oder erfahrbaren Bild- und Handlungsräumen hinaus geht. Es bedeutet, die Materialität von Stadt ernst zu nehmen und „Interesse an der materiellen Dimension der Welt, des sozialen Lebens, sozialer Praktiken sowie menschlicher Wahrnehmung und Erfahrung“ zu entwickeln und dies unter den besonderen Bedingungen des städtischen Raums in seinen unterschiedlichen Facetten und Ausdehnungen zu beobachten. Hauptanliegen des Beitrags ist es, diesen Fragen am Beispiel ausgewählter Szenarien, in denen Dinge und Objekte durch bestimmte Praktiken des Objektgebrauchs im städtischen Raum Bedeutung erlangen, genauer nachzugehen. Für die Auswahl der Fallbeispiele dient der österreichische Donauraum als Bezugsrahmen.

Votivtafeln und deren sekundäre Beschriftung stehen im Mittelpunkt des Beitrags zum sekundären Schriftgebrauch in der Neuzeit. Benutzungsspuren unterschiedlicher Art, vor allem die Produktion von Graffiti auf den verschiedensten Oberflächen scheint zu allen Zeiten in diversen kulturellen Kontexten ein konstantes Phänomen zu sein, das zunehmend in die Überlegungen zu Schriftproduktion, Kultpraxis und Sekundärverwendung von Objekten, um nur einige Aspekte zu nennen, einfließt. Am Beispiel von Votivtafeln aus zwei österreichischen Marienwallfahrtsorten, Mariazell und Maria Taferl, wird das Nebeneinander von Geschriebenen aufgezeigt und eingeordnet, die kausalen Zusammenhänge reflektiert und die beobachteten Phänomene erklärt und systematisiert werden. Im Besonderen soll dabei nach den Faktoren gefragt werden, die Vergesellschaftung bedingen oder bedingten, wie sie zustande kommen konnte und welche Intentionen damit möglicherweise verfolgt wurden.

Water appears as a powerful and influential medium in a tight network of relations between human action and the material world with complex impacts. The use, management and control of water constantly led to processes of negotiation regarding competence and responsibilities between the actors involved. It was not only about control and distribution, but also about protection against risks and how to manage them, about the control of abundance or scarcity and the evaluation of alterations in the landscape resulting from dams. This article will reflect on water as a medium and investigate the influence water had on urban communities in the Middle Ages by using the example of the towns Krems and Stein on the Danube. It discusses the system of planning, coordination and resource management required by the construction and maintenance of urban facilities as part of public infrastructure. From this viewpoint , water supply and its communal organisation it will raise questions about the social function of water infrastructure in an urban context.

Die Geschichte der Stadt Freistadt "als eine der sieben landesfurstlichen Stadte des Landes ob der Enns" zeichnet sich einerseits durch ihre ungewohnlich umfangreiche Uberlieferungslage schriftlicher Quellen, andererseits jedoch durch deren, gerade fur das 15. Jahrhundert ziemlich brach liegenden Bearbeitung aus. Dies ist auch einer der Hauptgrunde fur den zeitlichen Rahmen dieser Arbeit. Ausgangspunkt dieser Diplomarbeit stellen zwei grose Quellenbestande des Stadtarchivs Freistadt dar, die Urkunden der Jahre 1400 bis 1500, insgesamt 837 Stuck, und der fur osterreichisch-kleinstadtische Verhaltnisse in groser Anzahl vorhandene Bestand an Kammeramtsrechnungen, die in 14 Schmalfoliobanden vorliegen.
