Fishes are not only the major protein source but they also contain nutritionally valuable lipids and fatty acids. The consumption of fish and fish products is recommended as a means of preventing cardiovascular and other diseases and has greatly increased over decades in many European Countries (Cahu et.al., 2004). Besides these fishes have immense anti microbial peptide in defending against dreadful human pathogens (Ravichandran et. al., 2010). When fish is suggested as a means of improving health, both the lipid content and the PUFA distribution must be considered. It is generally recognized that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) composition might vary among species of fish. However, little attention has been paid to the PUFA composition of different species when selecting fish for diet (Hearn and Sgoutas, 1987). The order Perciformes was dominant with 8 families and 25 number of fish species followed by the order Siluriformes with 8 families and 24 number of fish species. Fish diversity was assessed by calculating the various diversity indices such as Shannon-Wiener index (H /), Simpson's dominance index (C) and evenness index (J). Higher H / value (3.694) observed in post monsoon and lowest (2.398) in monsoon. High evenness value (0.6930) was recorded during monsoon period. Seasonal water quality parameters such as water temperature (o C), pH, DO, nitrate and phosphates has been recorded and were found suitable for fish population.

One of the important commercial fish yields from this riverine system is Hilsa Tenualosa ilisha. The normal habitat of the fish is the lower region of the estuaries and the for eshore areas of the sea. It ascends the rivers mainly for spawning and spent fish as well as their progeny migrate down the rivers towards lower estuaries and coastal areas, which form the natural habitat of the species. During migration its body compositi on changes specially in terms of fatty acid profile. This fish has high content of ω3 fatty acid which has various beneficial properties for the normal human body like anti inflammatory, antithrombotic, hypolipodermic and vasodialatory properties. The lipid content of the hilsa body was found between 1.66 to 13.11%. The fish contains higher amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids. ω3 value varied between 6.6% to 15.1% of the total lipid content in the hilsa body. ω6...

The fatty acid profiles include minor amounts of odd number, branched chain and even number fatty acids as well as saturated components, the MUFA and PUFA. The major SFA were C16:0, C18:0 and C22:0. The C18:1 was prominent MUFA. The dominant PUFA were of the 6 series and were found chiefly in C18:2 fatty acids. The essential fatty acids composition showed prominence in C18:2 6, the branched chain fatty acids identified C16:0, C18:0 and C22:0. Overall significance of this study had been its revelation that Jhonius gangeticus, Eutropiicthys vacha, Pseudapoc...
