Front. Sustain. Cities: Looking Beyond Greenness: Transdisciplinary Approaches to Urban, 2021

This article attempts, through an extensive literature review, to understand convergences and divergences in perceptions of urban green spaces (UGSs) of city dwellers around the world and to identify gaps in the existing research. Additionally, the article explores research into the benefits associated with urban green spaces, including health (e.g., physical and mental), social (e.g., social networks and social relationships), economic (e.g., employment and income generation), and environmental (e.g., ecosystem services and biodiversity). This article further seeks to identify the extent to which urban residents have been found to perceive the roles UGSs can play in climate change adaptation and mitigation, and cultural exchange. Based on studies conducted in different countries over the past decade, this paper integrates environmental, social, cultural, and economic aspects of urban greening to provide insight into the similarities and differences in perceptions of urban green spaces and suggest approaches to building climate change resilient urban communities. This paper finds justification for: encouraging the use of integrated, multidisciplinary approaches, using innovative tools, for both the study and practical development of UGSs; conducting a greater number of studies of newer urban areas in developing countries; and considering the diverse disadvantages as well as the advantages of UGSs in order to support the continued development and expansion of this critical climate-friendly infrastructure. The more that residents' perceptions of and attitudes toward UGSs are incorporated into the design of such spaces, the more successful they will be at providing the myriad benefits they have the potential to offer.

Currently, researchers, academics, and policymakers focus on coping with and dealing with the adverse effects of climate change. However, due to climate change impacts, it is impossible to determine the number of coping strategies, primarily when the appropriate coping and adaptation strategies depend on the socioeconomic and cultural context of vulnerable communities facing climate change-related extreme events. Therefore, we cannot deny the current debate between coping strategies and climate change adaptation. In this case, the chapter addresses existing definitions, discussions, and pieces of evidence on coping strategies and adaptations for dealing with the adverse impacts of climate change. It also discusses with examples how the various relationships between climate change-related events and coping strategies or adaptations are different. Researchers present theoretical backgrounds in understanding the nexus between climate change and coping strategies and adaptation contextually. The chapter also includes some discussions of the above linkage in Bangladesh's context. Finally, various empirical studies provide thoughts that the connection between climate change, tackling strategies, and adaptation varies in terms of the severity and types of climate change-related events in which socioeconomic, sociodemographic, and cultural aspects mediate the relationship.

Since climate change education is an integral element in the increasingly urgent global approach ... more Since climate change education is an integral element in the increasingly urgent global approach to solving the problem of climate change, understanding perceptions of climate change among teachers in different academic institutions could play a significant role in how and to what extent institutions address the need to educate learners on this subject, specifically, and participate in other climate change mitigation strategies, in general. This study, therefore, examines teachers' perceptions of climate change regarding its significance, causes, consequences, and mitigation, through analysis of a self-administered structured questionnaire completed by 95 teachers from public and private educational institutions in the city of Sylhet in Bangladesh. Results from descriptive and inferential statistical analysis show that public and private school teachers have an understanding of climate change regarding its significance, causes, consequences, and mitigation. The results also reveal that the sociodemographic characteristics of teachers, as well as academic-related factors, influence their perceptions of climate change. This research concludes that teachers in public institutions have a greater awareness and understanding of climate change than those working in private schools. The research findings have broader implications for further research and policy recommendations and, in particular, draw the attention of the Departments of Education and Disaster Management in Bangladesh or in countries with similar contexts to introduce environmental and disaster education and training opportunities for teachers.

A self-administered questionnaire survey was filed out by 650 final-year undergraduate students studying in a variety of academic disciplines at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, Bangladesh. This study found that a majority of respondents perceive temperatures in Bangladesh as increasing and rainfall as decreasing. A majority also think that climate change is due to human activities such as deforestation, dredging rivers, extracting sand from rivers, the development of industry, and carbon emissions from vehicles, while a significant but smaller proportion perceived it as punishment from God for human sin. We examined the effects of selected variables-students' sex, religious affiliation, involvement in an environmental organization, completion of university courses related to the environment or climate change, academic discipline of study, and past experience of extreme weather events in their home locality-using three multinomial logistic regression (MLR) models on perceived changes in temperature, perceived changes in rainfall, and perceived causes of climate change. The MLR analysis regarding the perceived changes in temperature indicates that effects of sex, experience of extreme weather event in their home locality, and the completion of climate change-related courses are statistically significant. For perceived changes in rainfall, these are significantly explained by all predictors except completion of a climate change-related course. And finally, for perceived causes of climate change, the effects of students' experiences with extreme weather events in their hometown and involvement in an environmental organization were found to be statistically significant.

Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate change along with the adverse impacts of climate chang... more Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate change along with the adverse impacts of climate change. This paper aims to reveal the debates about climate change and extreme weather events. It considers Bangladesh as a case to understand the debates, the impacts of climate change on people's livelihoods. This paper used secondary sources to select and scrutunize recent literatures about climate change, extreme events, the impacts of climate change on livelihood patterns and future trends. Increase of minimum and maximum temperature and average rainfall are evident in this country along with the future projection regarding increase of temperature and precipitation. As a result sea level will rise and flood events will frequently occur in the future. The intensity, severity and extent of flooding will also be higher in the near future. It is evident that the negative impacts of extreme events will bring difficulties and challenges for people living in vulnerable areas and consequently will cause a lot of damage and loss of life. That demands paying more attention to climate change and context based adaptation strategies and integrative policy.

We selected two districts in Bangladesh that are vulnerable to extreme weather events: Sunamganj, which experiences flash flooding, and Brahmanbaria, which experiences cyclones and related floods. Survey data was collected from 120 randomly selected household heads from two villages in these districts, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 40 household heads who indicated early marriage was a coping strategy for managing effects of weather events. The mixed-methods study finds that early marriage of daughters is a coping strategy for managing two negative consequences of extreme weather events. First, by minimizing household expenses, householders can pay for damage-related expenses. Second, unmarried daughters may be subject to sexual violence during a crisis, especially in temporary shelters, which would harm both the family’s and daughter’s reputation and prevent future marriage.

The study selected a village, Sharat Pur from Sunamganj District, which is highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of flooding. The study gathered information from 158 respondents by using a semi-structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews. With the small sample size the study used descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis. Findings show that there is still a preference for more sons to recover the damage caused from the impacts of floods. However, people think having a large family is a burden. They emphasize controlling family size through family planning programs and do not take into account the risk of children dying affecting their desire to have additional children. Therefore they consider having more children especially sons as a gift from God and the occurrence of flood events as the wish of God. The intention of the study is not to generalize findings but to comprehend the underlying mechanism between disaster events and fertility behavior. The study collected information from a very small sample size. Future studies might consider a large sample size and explore more deeply the mechanism between the different disaster events and fertility decisions by using a comparative analysis between regions vulnerable to different extreme weather events and not vulnerable to extreme weather events within Bangladesh, and comparing Bangladesh with other South Asian countries.

This study tried to understand the nexus between socio-cultural factors and fertility preference ... more This study tried to understand the nexus between socio-cultural factors and fertility preference in a vulnerable (flood prone) area of Bangladesh. Socio-cultural factors influence age at first marriage of women and age at first birth of child. The factors also influence couples' fertility preferences. This study used both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the relationships between socio-cultural factors and fertility preference in a flood prone area. This study reveals that women and men with a few years of schooling got married at an earlier age compared to others. Couples prefer to have child as soon as possible after getting married and the time span between two births is also short in the vulnerable area. This study finds that age at first birth of women depends on their age at first marriage. This study also reveals that couples experience a longer birth interval after the first birth, if the child is a son. This indicates the existence of gender preference. But there is no statistically significant difference between men and women in the study area. This study also highlights that the socio-cultural factors such as education, contraceptive use, gender preference, social pressures and religion influence vulnerable people to prefer more children along with adverse impacts of flood events. This study suggests further studies by considering a large sample from vulnerable areas and doing a comparative study between vulnerable areas and non-vulnerable areas to disaster events. Keywords: age at first marriage, age at first birth, birth order, socio-cultural factors, vulnerable area
