According to traditional Sri Lankan chronicles such as the Dipavamsa, Buddhism was introduced into Sri Lanka in the third century BCE after the Third Buddhist council by Arhanthà Mahinda Thero, son of Emperor Ashoka. This was during the reign of Devanampiya Tissa of Anuradhapura; an ancient Sri Lankan kingdom. After the arrival of Arahantha Mahinda, he invited his sister Sangamitta Thera to bring a sapling of the Bodhi Tree (where Buddha was enlightened) to Sri Lanka and the first Buddhist monastery, monuments, and monk were introduced.
. When the British won control at the beginning of the 19th century Buddhism was fell into decline, a situation that encouraged the English missionaries that then began to flood the island. But against all expectations, the monastic and lay community brought about a major revival from about 1860 onwards, a movement that went hand in hand with growing nationalism. Buddhism has been given the foremost place under Article 9 of the Constitution which can be traced back to an attempt to bring the status of Buddhism back to the status it enjoyed prior to being destroyed by colonialists after Sri Lanka achieved its independence.
However, by virtue of Article 10 of the Sri Lankan constitution, the religious rights of all communities are preserved. Sri Lanka is the traditionally oldest religious Buddhist country that has continually practiced the Theravada tradition and protected its legacy for the world.
What I presented you is a short history as to how Buddhism established as the key religious practice in Sri Lanka. Henceforth I will be focusing on the legacy of Buddhism to south Asia in a socio-historic level and discuss how in the present Buddhist approach can be used as means of solving political, ethnic-based and other societal unrests issues in the present
