His main resear... moreBeau Driver is a historian of the 19th and 20th century United States who focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. His main research interests are in Americans’ understanding of class and work in the United States as well as the history of the workplace and cultural and gender history. Dr. Driver is currently working on several articles and a book manuscript taken from his dissertation, “The Worker: Walter Wyckoff and His Experiment in Reality,” which examines the life and work of Walter Augustus Wyckoff, professor of Economics and Sociology at Princeton University. He is also beginning research on his next project, a history of “Scientific Management.” Dr. Driver is a co-founder and editor at Erstwhile: An American History Blog.edit

This paper presents the economic and social issues that lead to the rise of indentured servitude as a means of acquiring labor in Early Colonial America. The text focuses on the condition in Europe, the conditions for those who crossed the Atlantic, and the condition for the servants in the New World. Also, this text provides a comparison of New England and Virginia and the Middle Colonies with regard to their respective uses of indentured servitude.

Building from the success of the Colorado College Summer School and the popularity of the Chautauqua movement, the Garden of the Gods Chautauqua hosted a number of talented speakers in 1902. These guests served to create a typer of early mass culture that brought the ideas of the East to those living in the West.
