Title : « Heredia’s nose : body, masculinity and coloniality in epic poetry and its parodic rewritings, from Juan de Castellanos (1522-1607) to Germán Espinosa (1938-2007) » Starting from the contrastive analysis of an amusing anecdote told by the epic poem Elegías de varones ilustres de Indias (Juan de Castellanos, 1589, considered one of the founding works of Colombian literature and history), and taken up by the historical novel Los cortejos del diablo. Balada de tiempos de brujas (Germán Espinosa, 1970), this article aims to question the relationship between colonial epic and historical novel, particularly in its ideological dimension, and to examine the extent to which this novelistic re-reading of epic bodies and masculinities makes it possible to inscribe this novel in a postmodern and possibly postcolonial perspective, which would deconstruct the traditional history of the Cartagena de Indias foundation.

This thesis analyses the American pirate character in epic poems composed in Spanish America and Spain at the turn of the 17th century. It reflects upon the choice of the Italianate literary epic poetry genre, whose apogee is situated in the Renaissance, to narrate the stories of the privateers and pirates’ attacks against Spanish-American cities. In order to understand the success in epic poetry of this subversive historical character who challenged the Spanish domination in America, I started by investigating the pirate character’s literary fortune and by questioning the epic genre. With the decline of the Spanish empire, the Protestant States’ increase in power produced different reactions in Spanish America and in the Iberian Peninsula. Indeed, while Lope de Vega wrote a patriotic epic poem, La Dragontea, the Spanish American versions of the facts distanced themselves from Spain (Juan de Castellanos, Silvestre de Balboa, Juan de Miramontes, Mateo Rosas de Oquendo's epic poems) : abandoned by the crown, these Spanish American poets had to face up to an aggressive enemy and a stranger who questioned the legitimacy of the Spanish rule in the New World and through whose contact the political and social crisis that the colonial society was suffering got intensified. Their critical, ironic or parodic reactions towards central power and colonial authorities were expressed through epic poetry, which reveals at the same time the poetic and politic import of these epic poems.

The epic poet can reconfigure historical events with verisimilitude and coherence in order to make sense and respect ethical priorities instead of chronologic order. Miramontes recreates the historic relationship between Drake and Oxenham and changes the temporality of their expeditions to the New World. While history tells that Oxenham was already prisoner in Lima when Drake entered Callao's port in february of 1579, Armas antárticas presents Oxenham fighting in Panama Isthmus and waiting for Drake's backup. But Miramontes's Drake turns away from his partner, abandons him in the middle of the battle and sails to Pacific Ocean. I will try to demonstrate why this narrative choice points out Drake's failure and hubris, and how Miramontes fulfills the epic expectation of searching for the moral sense of history, a "trans-historical sense" (Méniel, 2004), instead of historical truth.

Despite offering different approaches on this matter, considering the place of enunciation and the direct or indirect knowledge of this colonial reality, both literary works include Maroons in the Christian European history and its continuity in colonial Ameri
