On the one hand, it contends that certain readings shared by medieval versions of the poem which have been considered “innovations” in relation to Ovid’s critical text, might have been transmitted by late Latin manuscripts. On the other hand, it discusses the strategies used by Francesc Alegre to defend his own authority in a Catalan translation and commentary of Ovid’s text in the second half of the fifteenth century.

The author proves by means of examples that Alegre drew on Corella’s Lamentacions and Parlament en casa de Berenguer Mercader while translating his work between circa 1472 and 1492. Further, he may have also known Corella’s Raonament de Telamó i Ulisses. Thus, even if Alegre based his text on the Latin poem, he surely completed the translation with the aid of other sources that are not made explicit, such as Bonsignori and Corella. In addition, the author suggests that Corella might have known and used Bonsignori’s Italian compilation or another version of Ovid’s poem which depended on it.

This article argues that the Catalan translation is the work of a learned author who places himself in relation to the Italian tradition and draws on different sources to complete a work influenced by humanist ideas. Moreover, the evidence strongly supports the impact of Giovanni Bonsignori’s Ovidio Metamorphoseos Vulgare (c. 1375–1377) throughout the fifteen books of Alegre’s translation and in his allegorical interpretations in the second part of the work. I also contend that he may have known the Expositio and the Allegorie written by Giovanni del Virgilio (1322–1323).

Having established the first census of Catalan sentimental romances, the aim of this article is to compare them with the canonical works of Castilian sentimental romance in order to see if they share common features that allow us to verify that they belong to the same literary trend. Moreover, the development of the plot and the treatment of chivalry as distinctive elements between the works of both traditions will also be addressed.

It was not the genesis of a new genre, but it was the development of a new literary trend known as 'sentimental romance'. This PhD thesis deals with the first comprehensive overview of Catalan sentimental romance. To this purpose, a census was created. It contains all the works (translations, original texts and works in prose or in verse) that should be studied in relation to this trend. Moreover, the census showed critical gaps that had to be addressed, such as the need for an edition and a study of Faula de Diana ('Diana's Fable') and the unpublished work Requesta ('Love Request'), both written by Francesc Alegre. The analysis of Faula de Diana reveals it was influenced by Tragèdia de Caldesa ('Caldesa's Tragedy') by Joan Roís de Corella and Alegre's Catalan translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Last but not least, this thesis also contains an annex with the edition of Paris and Vienne's Catalan version which has been based on the incunable preserved at The Royal Library in Copenhagen. The comparison between this version and the French one is certainly useful in order to understand the nature of sentimental romance as a literary trend.

The main aim of this article is to compare Faula de Neptuno i Diana by Alegre with its principal sources, a classical and a contemporary work: Metamorphoses by Ovid and Tragèdia de Caldesa (‘Caldesa’s Tragedy) by Joan Roís de Corella. The comparison shows how Alegre used both texts as sources for creating an original myth based on Ovid’s fables and Caldesa’s behaviour. In order to do so, the author employs different narrative techniques, such as emulating the plot of certain passages of Metamorphoses and Tragèdia de Caldesa, writing word by word the same sentences that are found in his own translation of Ovid’s work and playing with style to reveal the contrast between the ridiculous scene he is describing and the original one. Having in mind these references enriches the comprehension of this exceptional work and outlines the moral interpretation that lies behind the mythological fable. Moreover, it is made clear that there is a continuum from Corella’s work in the fifties and Alegre’s work at the end of the fifteenth century (1482-1486), both written following the pattern of sentimental romances.

What comes first: the plot or a taste for certain rhetorical resources such as letters and allegories? This contribution deals with one of the most challenging pieces of chivalresque literature written in medieval Europe: Curial e Güelfa. This Catalan work from the fifteenth century should be related with the so-called ‘sentimental romance’, a sort of fashion regarding the treatment of love in the Hispanic works produced in the second half of the century. Although this literary trend has been widely studied in the Castilian tradition, a comprehensive overview of Catalan sentimental works from this period does not exist yet. The main aims of this article are to introduce scholars to these texts and to develop a discourse about Catalan sentimental romances focused on the features that Curial e Güelfa shares with them. The purpose of its author by using materials from sentimental romances and the role of that trend as the pattern behind the composition of this particular work will be addressed. To sum up, Curial e Güelfa is the result of the combination of fantasy and emulation and it can also be studied as an example of how the writer struggles to satisfy the reader’s expectations.

On the one hand, I will address the link between Alegre’s conceptualization of love and medical treatises from the Middle Ages that explore amor hereos as an illness caused by a sensing malfunction, such as Tractatus de amore heroico by Arnau de Vilanova. The treatment of love as a disease in the Catalan and Castilian poetry of the fifteenth century will also be taken into account. On the other hand, I will value the importance given to the moral dimension of the love phenomenon in Alegre’s sentimental works, which usually adopt an allegorical form.

In this paper, I will analyze the textual transmission of the texts that have a central role in this corpus: Frondino e Brisona, Rocabertí’s Glòria d’amor, Corella’s mythological fables and his Tragèdia de Caldesa, Tragèdia de Lançalot by mossèn Gras and the love compositions written by Romeu Llull, Pardo de la Casta, Francesc Alegre and Francesc Moner. My main aim is to demonstrate: a) the influence of Ausiàs March’s poetry through Pere Torroella’s work in Catalan sentimental romances, as both of them are considered experts in the art of love by the writers from the second half of the fifteenth century, b) the importance of taking into account the epistolary exchanges between these authors as a theoretical framework regarding love, c) the strong relation between verse and prose in the Catalan sentimental corpus and d) the connections between the reception of Catalan and Castilian sentimental romances, as well as the go-between role that bilingual authors such as Pere Torroella/Pedro Torrellas play in this context.

These vernacular translations, together with the glosses, commentaries, and illustrations that frequently accompanied them, are the object of study of this collective volume. Ovid in the Vernacular covers eight linguistic areas (English, Spanish, Catalan, French, German, Italian, Dutch, and Greek) and offers new insights about the way in which each of these emerging vernacular cultures appropriated and transformed this Latin poem through words and images. At the same time, this book looks beyond national and linguistic borders and retraces the circulation of textual and non-textual elements of the vernacular Ovid across Europe, connecting different literary traditions. This volume overcomes the perceived division between Middle and Early Modern Ages, and charts continuities and discontinuities between these two historical periods, addressing the influence of manuscript culture and print culture on the re-fashioning of Ovid. The scope of this publication is to bear witness to the transformative ability of Ovid's Metamorphoses and unveil how the transformations to which this poem lent itself allowed this work to become a constitutive part of the literary and artistic life of Western Europe.
