Medieval Catalan Literature

A scene from Ramon Llull’s Blaquerna has not received till now a cogent explanation able to give an account of its literary models. A comparative study shows how the author displays a theme borrowed to the Classical and to the Christian tradition. This paper aims to separe each other, as well as to define the literary topics at work within the reelaboration of the theme. The Classical tradition depends at most from the image of the philosoph, a theme largely dealt with in comedy, especially the philosophs of the Cynical school. In the Hellenistic Age, this literary model is blended with the character of Aesopus; already in the Medieval Age, when Christianity was quite expanded indeed, the theme achieves its final configuration by means of the addition of elements borrowed to this religion, although they are only a renewed version of that already known in the Ancient literature. According with this, the weight of the Hebraic and the Christian traditions have a secundary influence from the point of view of literature.
As to the most close source available by Llull, a probable text should be the Life of Symeon of Leontius of Cyprus, a very active work regarding the diffusion of the character displayed in our scene. This source could be also of some help to give a date to Blaquerna.

Mujer y cultura literaria en las letras ibéricas medievales y del renacimiento temprano es la bibliografía más completa y actualizada existente en el mercado y en el mundo académico internacional en torno a las múltiples facetas culturales de la mujer en las literaturas hispánicas del Medioevo hasta principios del siglo XVI, tanto en árabe, hebreo y latín, como en castellano, catalán, gallego y portugués. Se trata de un repertorio que puede resultar de interés tanto para quienes trabajen en cada una de esas áreas lingüísticas como para quienes desarrollen estudios de literatura comparada, tanto para estudiantes que inicien sus investigaciones como para quienes deseen actualizar sus conocimientos sobre las mujeres hispánicas durante aquellos siglos. En este sentido, la utilidad de esta bibliografía, con más de 1700 referencias, puede resultar de atractivo entre docentes de muy diversas disciplinas, pues recoge ediciones, monografías y artículos de investigadores en el campo de la historia, la filología, el arte, los estudios literarios y culturales o los estudios feministas, sobre el género y la sexualidad. Este corpus bibliográfico no sólo ofrece datos sobre las autoras, anónimas o conocidas, de aquellos siglos, o sobre las representaciones literarias de nuestras antepasadas, sino, además, abre las puertas a un amplio caudal de informaciones sobre la el papel de las mujeres en la creación masculina.

En el presente artículo pretendemos observar, principalmente, la translatio del poema épico "Africa" de Petrarca a la obra de Antoni Canals, "Scipió e Anibal", en-marcado dentro de la prosa catalana de finales del XIV-principios del XV, época dorada para las letras valencianas. Por otro lado, y en primer lugar, nos pareció oportuno ver el recorrido de la presencia y figura de la obra de Tito Livio desde la tardoantigüedad, pasando por su recepción en la Edad Media hasta llegar al Renacimiento donde retomará vigor. Primero sería "descubierto" por el prehumanismo de Lovato Lovati y finalmente por la refundición de Petrarca (el conocido códice harleyano) y la influencia del historiógrafo paduano en el Renacentista que le ha-ría componer su poema épico, a imagen de una "Eneida" nacionalista, "Africa", que nos llevará hasta Canals, con su traducción libre del "Scipió e Anibal", donde nos expone los cambios de la fortuna, muy influenciado por la prosa de Bernat Metge.

The aim of this article is to analyse the literary, religious and medical discourses that converge in one of the leading works in medieval Catalan: the Espill (Mirror) (1460), by Jaume Roig. Firstly, it should be remembered that the author was one of the most prestigious doctors in 15th century Valencia, so it should be judged in the scientific context that nurtured it. Nor should we forget, in second place, the misogynist tradition behind this long narrative poem. On the other hand, I would like to emphasise a cultural crossroads that was quite unusual in its time, and is as yet little studied, which is linked to sodomy as a female “creation”; I will assess the significance of this construction, compared with leprosy in the same text.

The Majorcan mystic and philosopher Ramon Llull (c. 1232-c. 1315) is best known for his Art, a universal method of combinatory reasoning supposedly permitting comprehension of all fields of knowledge. Llull's Arbre de Ciència or Tree of Science (1295-1296) is an encyclopedic presentation of the Art, which figures sixteen branches of learning as a series of sixteen trees. Each tree represents a different aspect of the singular Tree of Science: just as the book of the Arbre de Ciència is made up of sixteen shorter books, so the Arbre itself is a single tree from which a portable forest unfolds. Thinking through Llull's Tree of Science, this paper examines mental space(s), including the spaces of thought and knowledge, and asks: what kind of space do thoughts and knowledge occupy? Why are spatial paradigms such as tree diagrams so commonly used to organise knowledge, and how are they constructed and comprehended? Further, this paper probes the limits of spatial thinking. The mental stage is at once the site of the most elementary sketches of ideas, and of the most advanced elaborations of myriad infinitesimal connections between concepts. Llull's meticulously-described diagrammatic trees, however, have proved an insoluble challenge to generations of illustrators, indicating the difficulty of translating the spatial configurations which are available to thought into graphic representations. Are these spaces of knowledge accessible and comprehensible enough to function as the didactic tools as which they are offered? Or is the space of thought a mental space only, impossible to display in any other format? Ramon Llull's recursive and intricately-conceived Arbre de Ciència tests the limits of both intellectual and graphic figurations of the spatial formulations of knowledge which it presents.

Through the examples of some passages from Francesc Eiximenis' Terç del Crestià and the Llibre de les dones (in which this Franciscan spiritualist quotes and uses the debate on women), the author issues a caution on this subject: one shouldn't take the use of misogynistic or profeminist topics by medieval (male) writers as proof of a sincere engagement, but instead should contemplate its function in a broad context.

Analysis of the story of the battle of Portopí (12 / IX / 1229) according to the version offered in paragraphs 61-67 of  the "Llibre dels fets" by Jaime I, King of Aragon in contrast to the versions of the "Chronicle" of Bernat Desclot and of "Kitab Tarih Mayurqa" of the Muslim historian Ibn Amira.

Tots els experts en literatura medieval coincideixen a considerar La Faula de Guillem de Torroella, escrita als volts del 1375, com una obra prou rellevant en la literatura catalana del moment. No obstant això, el text no és lliure de controvèrsia. Les discussions se centren entorn a les lectures que se’n pot fer i el missatge que volia transmetre l’autor: una simple i innocent al·legoria de l’ideal cavalleresc i la decadència moral del moment o, per contra, un al·legat en favor de la derrotada nissaga dels reis de Mallorca.

Siguiendo el modelo de la serie, consta de introducción (pp. 7-11), argumento de la traducción anónima según el impreso de 1511 (pp. 13-41), diccionario y lista de personajes (pp. 43-56) y repertorio bibliográfico de ediciones y estudios (pp. 57-61) sobre la recepción y las investigaciones más significativas acerca de la versión castellana.

L’any 1494 l’impressor barceloní Pere Miquel va fer un tiratge de mil exemplars de les "Transformacions" de Francesc Alegre (ca.1452–ca.1508), una versió catalana de "Les metamorfosis" del poeta romà Publi Ovidi Nasó. A continuació, en el mateix incunable, Alegre va fer estampar les seves "Al·legories", un comentari mitològic compost a partir de la "Genealogia deorum gentilium" de Giovanni Boccaccio. El present volum inclou l’edició crítica i annotada de les "Transformacions" de Francesc Alegre, amb èmfasi especial en l’estudi dels originals usats pel traductor. Per a dur a terme aquest estudi s’ha comparat l’obra amb les traduccions d’Ovidi en vulgar més difoses dels segles XIV i XV, i amb tants còdexs llatins de les "Les metamorfosis" com ha estat possible. Un cop conformada aquesta xarxa, s’ha analitzat el català en relació a tots aquests textos. Com es mostrarà, Alegre tradueix, principalment i de manera sostinguda, de dos textos: l’original llatí d’Ovidi i la versió italiana de Giovanni Bonsignori (s. XIV). A més d’aquestes fonts habituals, Alegre inclou passatges concrets que provenen de la "Genealogia" de Boccaccio. Un cas a part, que analitzem, són alguns passatges relacionats amb la producció de Joan Roís de Corella, i la relació de Corella i Alegre amb la traducció catalana anterior de "Les metamorfosis" feta per Francesc de Pinós.

La publicación en 1977 de A Critical Bibliography of
Hispanic Arthurial Material, de Harvey L. Sharrer (Londres, Grant & Cutler) contribuyó a un mejor conocimiento de los textos conservados, ediciones y estudios de la literatura artúrica y tristaniana medieval en España y Portugal. Treinta años después , este artículo amplía los contenidos de aquel volumen, al recoger los resultados del
descubrimiento de nuevos testimonios y de las últimas investigaciones sobre este ámbito, en lengua catalana , gallego-portuguesa y castellana de la Edad Media.

L’article ofereix una visió de conjunt del corpus de poesia lul·liana, des d'una perspectiva cronològica i formal. Situant cada text en el seu context de composició i en relació amb la seva tradició literària, és possible observar una evolució clara en l’ús del vers i de la rima com a formes de producció de textos. També es posa de manifest que la tria d'aquesta forma està estretament lligada a la recerca de mecanismes de promoció i difusió del missatge apostòlic i intel·lectual lul·lià per a diferents públics i en diferents contextos.

This article offers an overview of Ramon Llull’s poetic works from a chronological and formal perspective. By connecting every text with its context of composition and its literary tradition, an interesting pattern in the evolution of Llull's use of poetic forms emerges. It also becomes clear that Llull's purpose when choosing this form was the promotion and dissemination of his apostolic and intellectual message.

This article analyzes in a historical context the earliest evidences of Dante’s influence on Catalan culture during the reigns of Kings Peter IV, John I and Martin of Aragon, until the interregnum (1410-12) and the change of dynasty resulting from the Compromise of Caspe (1412). French courts, Avignon papal curia and the close personal, political and dynastic ties between the kingdoms of Sicily and Aragon constitute the background on which this paper studies the many echoes of Dante —from the Commedia, from the commentaries on Dante and from the so-called silloge boccaccesca— to be found around the chancellery and the court of Aragon: specifically, in Bernat Metge’s Llibre de Fortuna e Prudència (1381) and Lo somni (c. 1398); in Andreu Febrer’s, Gilabert de Pròixida’s and Melcior de Gualbes’ poetry; in one letter from Martin of Aragon (1408), and in Felip de Malla’s early predication (1411, 1413).

Researchers have paid big attention to the character of the widow Reposada, although no clearcut model of it has been established, in spite of the identification of some of its features with other vilain or at least immoral women. This paper tries to make some progress on the matter by means of the suggestion, which is based on linguistic data, that the ethopoiia of Reposada is indebted to a tradition that has its roots at the Greek novel, if not sooner, but for different reasons was especially developed by the Byzantine satire, in which the misogynist trends were stressed.

RESUMEN: El presente artículo analiza el capítulo 191 de la Crònica de Ramón Muntaner, dedicado a la batalla de Gagliano, librada en febrero de 1300, en la que la caballería angevina liderada por el conde Gautier V de Brienne fue derrotado a manos de los almogávares comandados por Blasco de Alagón y Guillem Galceran de Cartellà. En primer lugar, se examina el tratamiento que el cronista hace de la figura de los Caballeros de la Muerte, antagonistas de la historia, y se aportan diversos ejemplos de personajes de naturaleza similar en otros textos del período medieval. En segundo lugar, se contrastan las características que Muntaner atribuye a este grupo de guerreros con las biografías de los principales caballeros angevinos que combatieron en Gagliano. Finalmente, se identifican los principales mecanismos narrativos de los que el cronista se sirve para referir la batalla, y se compara su versión de los hechos con la de la Historia Sicula de Niccolò Speciale. ABSTRACT: This article analyses chapter 191 of Ramon Muntaner's Chronicle, devoted to the Battle of Gagliano, fought in February 1300, in which an Angevin cavalry corps led by Count Walter V of Brienne was defeated at the hands of an Almugavar army commanded by Blasco of Alagón and Guillem Galceran of Cartellà. Firstly, it examines the way in which Muntaner introduces the antagonists of his account, i.e., the Knights of Death, and provides several examples of similar characters in other texts of the medieval period. Secondly, it assesses Muntaner's depiction of this group of warriors in the light of the extant biographical data concerning the Angevine commanders present at Gagliano. Thirdly and lastly, it identifies the main narrative devices upon which the chronicler relies to craft his account of the battle, and compares his version of the events with that told in Niccolò Speciale's Historia Sicula.

Focused on two sixteenth-century editions of a medieval Valencian author (Ausiàs March, 1400-59), this book examines how the material transformations of early modern poetic texts at different stages in their publication process—from the making of the printer’s copy and the translation of the text, to the typesetting and editing of the book in the printing shop—entailed thorough changes in the meaning of a lyric corpus.

El compositor alcoià Amand Blanquer Ponsoda (1935-2005) és, sens dubte, una referència absoluta dins del panorama musical del nostre país. Les seues aportacions musicals inclouen alguns exemples repersentatius dels clàssics valencians com ara Roís de Corella, la novel·la Tirant lo Blanc i també la poesia d'Ausiàs March. D'aquest darrer poeta són els textos de les dues obres a les quals fa referència l'article: Ausiàs March en concert (1988) i Cants d'amor i de mort (1990).

Different approaches to the only extant work written by the Valencian physician Jaume Roig, entitled L'Espill, tried to link this poem to some European literary tradition, especially misogynic poetry and preachment. However, the most striking similarities point to the Byzantine satyric poetry, as from the XIVth century on there are several poems dealing with the main subjects considered by Roig. Clear parallels can be underlined with one of these poems, entitled Praise of the most noble women and most honourable ladies. In our opinion, this is the most cogent way to explain the main characteristics actually attested in L'Espill. Moreover, the Byzantine poems was known in Western Europe in countries, periods and situations which made possible that Roig could afford awareness.

The use of feudal vocabulary is the most innovative feature of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Occitan troubadour love lyric. The Catalan and Valencian poets who continued and reworked this tradition over the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries preserved this convention with varying degrees of fidelity. The aim of this paper is to identify trends in the use of feudal vocabulary in the works of Catalan and Valencian poets, and to interpret these tendencies in the light of contemporary historic developments. The poets’ choices in selecting materials from the previous tradition provide valuable information about their strategies of adaptation to the requirements of their audiences. This analysis will allow delimitating similarities and differences between classical troubadour lyric and the works of later Catalan and Valencian poets, an essential step towards the definition of Catalan poetry in the late Middle Ages. The specific identity of this poetic expression has yet to be outlined, since it has traditionally been described in the context of disparaging comparisons with other earlier and contemporary poetic traditions.
