A Response to the Appearance of Nazism · During the 1930s in Germany, and later in exile, a series of studies on the Italian Renaissance were published by prestigious scholars participating in an intellectual world linked to the ideals of the liberal and cultured Jewish-German Bildung. Although without necessary links or affinities between them, in Cassirer’s case, his studies on Pico della Mirandola in Giovanni Pico della Mirandola : A study in the history of the idea of the Renaissance of 1942 ; in the case of Hans Baron, his book The Crisis of the Early Italian Renaissance : Civic Humanism and Republican Freedom in an Era of Classicism and Tyranny of 1955, and finally, Oskar Kristeller’s extensive work on Renaissance thought, in all these cases, there is a search to find, in the Italian Renaissance, a counter-model to the emergence of totalitarian political forms in Europe

This notion was forged by the German philosopher on the horizon of a period of rea-dings of the work of Edmund Husserl that coin-cides with his departure from the main orien-tations of the neo-Kantian school of Marburg. Precisely, the course of these reflections is a dominant theme in the exchange that Strauss had with the philosopher Eric Voegelin, in which the dimensions related to the philoso-phical-political dimension of Husserl’s thou-ght become relevant.

While representations of animality were generally seen as a means of demeaning minority communities – and even preparing their destruction – this essay examines these same representations as forms of cultural response and resistance by these communities. This resistance and cultural responses occurred through the use of Yiddish-speaking animals. The artistic representation of these talking animals aimed not only to respond to possible perpetrators who were strangers to the harassed community, but also to the new claims of the Jewish classes who denied their own recent past of destitution and marginalization.

To this we may add Levinas' own allusions to the "yellow peril" in addition, the consideration of Europe as a cultural choice center and spiritual relevance of the Bible that have reinforced these objections. However, while those whose point out these faults in Levinas'analyses have often acknowledged that his philosophical work as a fundamental core retains a liberating and anti colonial power argumentative. This identification of an emancipatory core in terms of a political and colonial oppression-but alternated with permanent relapses into ethnocentric visions, rises from a central line of Levinas'philosophy: the affirmation of the irreducible otherness of the Other not is a logical end of a structural or speculative system but a vulnerability embodied in the poor, the excluded etc. We must say, as in the case of the philosophy of Heidegger, with Levinas also has been tried making the commitments and public interventions play against certain fundamental aspects of his own philosophy. Bearing this context in mind my intervention proposes to get perspective in reading Levinas'interventions not only contemplating his hermeneutic horizon but also its pragmatic possibilities. In this regard I will consider as a central point what believe to be the strongest and risky thesis in Levinas'proposal: the ethical encounter allowing peace is performed only outside the culture. With this I intend to speculate on the limitations but also on the opportunities afforded by this thesis. The presence of Nazism as a key event Levinas'philosophical project quickly warned him not only against any emphasis on the myth but also to look with suspicion cultural determinations as matrix of human experience. In this sense we can compare Levinas'path to that of Cassirer. While the latter since the 20s reaffirmed the condition of myth as symbolic form and gave a "cultural turn" to the Kantian system inherited from his master Herman Cohen, in

In his essay “On the Question: What is Enlightenment?” (1784), Moses Mendelssohn uses the term “national happiness” (Nationalglükseligkeit) in a clearly negative sense. However, during the course of Mendelssohn’s reflective work the notion of happiness plays a positive role and is well considered in line with many other philosophical perspectives of the Enlightenment. This essay aims to present some ideas about the nuances that the idea of happiness acquires in Mendelssohn’s work. Key-words: Mendelssohn, happiness, Kant, Leibniz, epicureanism.
The categorical refusal of Moses Mendelssohn, in the second half of the 18th century, to grant the authorities of the Jewish community the right to be able to dispose the exclusion of its members at their discretion, a proposal that had been offered as part of an illustrated program of civic improvement of the Jewish population by the Prussian civil servant Christian Wilhelm von Dohm, allows to observe the tensions between the proclaimed enlightened principles and the political effects in its scope of aplication. The arguments raised by Moses Mendelssohn against the granting of exclusion rights renew the issues of membership and citizenship in a way that places them as limit concepts to think about the conditions of a community
