This chapter comprises two parts: a very brief history of socio-cultural and political aspects of... more This chapter comprises two parts: a very brief history of socio-cultural and political aspects of sport (especially football) in Brazil that provides the background and context for the second that discusses contemporary aspects of mega-event bidding and hosting in Brazil. The first part focuses on the role of football in forging national identity and the growth in popularity of the sport. The politics surrounding Brazil’s involvement in the FIFA World Cup since 1950 is discussed. The domestic politics of Brazilian football and key figures João Havelange and his former son-in-law Ricardo Teixeira are also considered. The second part will consider bidding and national politics underpinning the FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, public protest and security, and demonstrations before and during the 2014 World Cup. The chapter concludes by considering the impact of mega-event hosting on political agendas and the outlook for football and other professional sports post-mega-events in Brazil.

This contribution explores different ideas about community (or komyuniti, the Japanese loan word ... more This contribution explores different ideas about community (or komyuniti, the Japanese loan word borrowed from English) and different means of community development in relation to association football in contemporary Japan. We show how football has been used in Japan to cope with the emotional, social and economic challenges of social change in late modernity. Analysing the social usage of football for a very heterogeneous contingent of needs and ends we argue that over the past 15 years different cities and regions in Japan have been unequally prepared to employ the game for their own local affairs and thus have produced varying modes of community support and exhibit different types of football communities. Sociologists have come to de‐emphasize the meaning of place in the information society, 1 turning towards belonging, interest or attachment as alternatives opening out the conceptual space within which non‐place forms of community can be analysed. 2 Since we are mainly concerned here with the interaction between football clubs and the various actors in their geographical home town or region, our use of the concept of community remains closely tied to an arguably antiquated sense of place.

We have been asked to provide a summarizing article on the role of sports in memorizing the Japan... more We have been asked to provide a summarizing article on the role of sports in memorizing the Japanese nation. Each of the three dimensions of memory evoked and revealed in the studies that are contained in this issue demonstrate the promise of, and purchase that, a focus on sport and lieu de mémoire provides to scholars of sport and Japanese society. We draw a tentative conclusion that the articles in this issue demonstrate that historical studies of sports can open a window onto the topology of Japanese symbolism. Amongst the questions we need to continue to ask are to what degree pre-modern societies have actually shared and nourished the ‘living memory’, the loss of which has been bemoaned by Nora. Also we must take issue with the notion of ‘collective memory’ as an absolute, all-encompassing, entity, since it is important to consider opportunities for the investigation of counter-memory and counter-memorialization.

Alter-globalization refers to a large spectrum of global social movements that support new forms ... more Alter-globalization refers to a large spectrum of global social movements that support new forms of globalization and that urge that values of democracy, justice, environmental protection, and human rights be put ahead of purely economic concerns. This paper attempts to develop a framework for the study of the influence of alter-globalization on sport in three ways: by outlining a periodization of social movements and sport; by proposing a typology of responses to the politics of globalization; and by proposing a typology of recent social movements associated with sport. The paper does not report on an empirical research project, but provides a stock take of what has happened since the 1990s regarding the politics of globalization and the politics of sport, with specific reference to global social movements. The questions raised in this paper include: What form do the movements challenging the world sports order today take? How are they connected to alterglobalism? What alternative models of sport do they propose? Where some may argue for “one world, one sport,” this paper explores whether “another sport is possible”. In doing so, it aims to ask how these questions about the possibility of political transformation through sport could be answered through a series of empirical research projects.

A Rede INCT – Observatório das Metrópoles, a partir de um projeto nacional “Metropolização e Mega... more A Rede INCT – Observatório das Metrópoles, a partir de um projeto nacional “Metropolização e Megaeventos: os impactos da Copa do Mundo 2014 e Olímpiadas 2016”, realizou uma ampla pesquisa sobre os Megaeventos no Brasil, em especial sobre os impactos da Copa do Mundo 2014 e seus efeitos nas cidades sedes.

O presente livro pretende apresentar, destacar e analisar uma série de dados, informações e referências sobre a Copa do Mundo 2014 na cidade do Natal-RN, entre os anos de 2007 e 2014 – tempo de preparação para o Megaevento.

Pretende-se, com este trabalho, contribuir para a avaliação dos processos de adequação e reestruturação da cidade do Natal, a partir dos projetos elencados à realização da Copa do Mundo, articulando metodologias quantitativas, mas também análises da conjuntura sobre as políticas urbanas e o contexto local. Espera-se contribuir com o debate sobre os Megaeventos, permitindo aos acadêmicos, movimentos sociais, poder público e sociedade em geral dispor de mais elementos na avaliação dos possíveis legados ou dos riscos associados a este tipo de projeto urbano.

Os autores são professores, pesquisadores e alunos em pós-graduação de diversas áreas, voltados aos temas do Desenvolvimento Urbano contemporâneo, contando com o apoio da FINEP.

ABSTRACT Sociology of sport in the UK is as old as the subdiscipline itself but was uniquely shaped by the prominence of football hooliganism as a major social issue in the 1970s and 80s. While it remains a somewhat niche activity, the field has been stimulated by the growing cultural centrality of sport in UK society. This quantitative and qualitative development has been recognized in recent governmental evaluations of research expertise. Current research reflects this expanded range of social stratification and social issues in sport both domestically and on a global level, while the legacy of hooligan research is evident in the continuing concentration on studies of association football. Historically, this empirical research has largely been underpinned by figurational, Marxist/neo-Marxist , or feminist sociological theories, but there is now a greater emphasis on theoretical synthesis and exploration. As a consequence of the expansion of the field, allied to its empirical and theoretical diversity, there is a burgeoning literature produced by UK sociologists of sport which spans entry level textbooks, research monographs and the editorship of a significant number of specialist journals. The chapter concludes by noting the future prospects of the sociology of sport in the UK in relation to teaching, research and relations with other sport-related subdisciplines and the sociological mainstream.

The sports minister of Brazil
opens the book with the perceptions of legacies for the country. Examples come from the practice such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Munich, Athens, Torino, Beijing, Vancouver, London, Sochi, Rio, and Tokyo, and World Football in South Africa, Brazil and so on. We bring the presentation of footprints, impacts, legacies, quickly
and directly. All contributions are presented with summaries in three languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish; with full texts in English and Portuguese. Each chapter is composed of four items: introduction, to familiarize the reader with the theme; The discussion to promote a reflection on the subject; The footprints that present
lessons learned, whether positive or negative, and future considerations that is a kind of knowledge management associated with counseling or intervention needs in future editions of mega-events.
