Les fastes du textile liturgique de la cathédrale de Tournai » organisée du 11 septembre au 28 novembre 2021 à TAMAT, Musée de la Tapisserie et des Arts Textiles de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles situé à Tournai. Il est le fruit des recherches menées par une équipe de chercheur.e.s belges et français.e.s. La publication de ces recherches est par ailleurs ancrée dans le cadre de deux projets scientifiques passés et en cours : le projet OrnaSacra (Brain, Belspo) et le projet Christina (Fed-twin, Belspo).

Qu’il soit éphémère ou permanent, profane ou religieux, qu’il concerne l’architecture, la sculptu... more Qu’il soit éphémère ou permanent, profane ou religieux, qu’il concerne l’architecture, la sculpture, la peinture, la tapisserie ou les jardins, l’art du décor atteint en Europe un degré exceptionnel d’élaboration et de complexité à partir de la Renaissance. Les études réunies dans le présent volume s’intéressent aux dispositifs d’encadrement, réels ou feints, imaginés par les artistes pour délimiter, articuler, transfigurer les différentes parties de leurs décors, tout en conditionnant l’expérience et la réception du message proposé aux sens. Trop souvent considéré par l’histoire de l’art comme un ornement accessoire destiné à embellir objets et images, le motif du cadre trouve dans les décors de la première modernité (1500-1700) un champ d’application aussi vaste que fécond, et permet de penser l’œuvre dans son ensemble comme un système unitaire organisant, parfois de façon étonnamment ludique, plusieurs niveaux de représentation et d’artifice.

Le présent volume rassemble une série d’études qui ont été menées et/ou présentées dans le cadre ... more Le présent volume rassemble une série d’études qui ont été menées et/ou présentées dans le cadre du programme de recherche Cultures du Spectacle Baroque entre Italie et anciens Pays-Bas financé par la Politique scientifique fédérale belge. Il se donne pour ambition de renouveler l’analyse historique et théorique des solennités spectaculaires en s’intéressant tout particulièrement aux effets produits par les dispositifs déployés lors de ce type de manifestations. Par ailleurs, soucieux d’élargir le champ déjà bien exploré des rituels civiques ou monarchiques, il porte essentiellement l’accent sur les solennités religieuses. Tout en tenant compte de la circulation à l’échelle européenne et même mondiale des modèles festifs, il veille également à privilégier la comparaison entre deux espaces culturels, les anciens Pays-Bas et l’Italie, qui, bien qu’ils développent des cultures festives propres ancrées dans des traditions locales, n’entretiennent pas moins des échanges qui s’accélèrent à partir du XVIe siècle. Il s’agit cependant moins d’envisager les traces de ces influences que de mieux comprendre la façon dont ces deux cultures ont pu construire, indépendamment l’une de l’autre et/ou au contact l’une avec l’autre, de mêmes conceptions de l’expérience festive, au-delà de la différence des moyens mis en œuvre.

Après avoir longtemps été mise à la marge des études en histoire de l’art, la question de l’ornem... more Après avoir longtemps été mise à la marge des études en histoire de l’art, la question de l’ornement fait aujourd’hui l’objet d’un regain d’intérêt considérable et de profonds renouvellements théoriques et mé-thodologiques. S’inscrivant dans un champ de recherche en plein (re)développement, le propos de cet ouvrage est de questionner la nature, les fonctions et les usages de l’ornement à un moment particulier de son histoire : les Temps Modernes. Comment l’ornement a-t-il pu être compris, exploité, légitimé, canalisé par un discours qui s’est cristallisé autour des genres et de leur hiérarchie ? Face à ce discours, comment l’ornement a pu réellement faire sens dans l’histoire des arts et comment l’histoire de l’art comme discipline peut aujourd’hui en rendre compte ? Si la nature de l’ornement réside dans sa trans-versalité, ou sa capacité à affecter selon des modalités diverses tous les genres artistiques, quels sont les spécificités et les rôles qu’il tient dans chacun de ces domaines artistiques ? Comment l’ornement a pu faire sens au sein d’un réseau d’acteurs multiples, constitué des artistes et des commanditaires d’une part et des spectateurs d’autre part ? Pour comprendre les jeux et les enjeux qu’il recouvre et les multiples sens qu’il revêt au cours de la période des Temps Modernes, l’ornement est interrogé ici à travers une grande diversité de corpus et de méthodes : de l’architecture aux arts décoratifs, de la peinture à la gra-vure, des sources textuelles au traitement des formes et des matières, de l’Italie aux Pays-Bas, de la France à l’Angleterre, du Quattrocento au siècle des Lumières, le phénomène ornemental est abordé à tra-vers des approches multiples et croisées, historiographique et méthodologique, historique et théorique, formelle, fonctionnelle et iconologique.

Si la dépense somptuaire constitue certainement l’un des ingrédients les plus significatifs des festivités éphémères, l’ostentation se place aussi régulièrement sous le signe de donation. Dans le contexte de la première modernité, c’est d’ailleurs souvent la gratuité du geste ou la générosité des donateurs qui semble justifier les dépenses investies dans les cérémonies. Cette communication se propose d’étudier ce phénomène culturel et ses représentations textuelles à travers l’étude des fêtes de canonisation des saints jésuites Ignace de Loyola et François-Xavier en 1622. En interrogeant les relations écrites de ces festivités, chargées de re-présenter l’événement et d’en maintenir un souvenir durable, il s’agira d’étudier la collusion particulière entre don, magnificence et piété qui semble caractériser ces solennités.
