Abstract: The notion of authorship, although already long lasting in the western society, is still the topic of much controversy. In general, the matter has been evaluated under the lens of the literary critique, to which the name of the author plays, since its upbringing, a very particular role of control over texts. By proposing the analysis of the matter through a strictly discursive perspective, Foucault (1999, 2009) inaugurates a new understanding regarding the author figure. Foucault’s perspective, when combined with the concept of discursive commodification developed within the field of Critical Discourse Analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001), allows us to deepen our understanding of the status and the social role that authorship receives in our society. Such issue becomes particularly relevant in the current context, in which the notion of individual authorship and the laws of intellectual property generate an immense paradox within the cognitive capitalism regime (COCCO; VILARIM, 2009). This study aims at discussing how the author-function may be understood within the context of expanding discursive technologies and products.
