Previous research has demonstrated that intra- and interpersonal rhythmic interlimb coordination are both constrained by the self-organizing entrainment process of coupled oscillators. Despite intra- and interpersonal coordination exhibiting the same stable macroscopic movement patterns the variability of the coordination is typically found to be much greater for inter- compared to intrapersonal coordination. Researchers have assumed that this is due to the interpersonal visual-motor coupling producing a weaker attractor dynamic than the intrapersonal neuromuscular coupling. To determine whether this assumption is true, two experiments were conducted in which pairs of participants coordinated hand-held pendulums swung about the wrist, either intra- and interpersonally. Using the cross-recurrence statistics of percent recurrence and maxline to independently index the level of noise and the attractor strength of the coordination, respectively, the results confirmed that the attractor strength was significantly weaker for inter- compared to intrapersonal coordination and that a similar magnitude of noise underlies both.

This paper describes the development of the Protocol for Identification of Problems for Rehabilitation (PLPR), a tool to standardize collection of functional information based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Development of the protocol : The PLPR was developed for use during the initial contact with adult patients within a public network of rehabilitation services. Steps to develop the protocol included: survey of the ICF codes most used by clinical professionals; compilation of data from functional instruments; development and pilot testing of a preliminary version in the service settings; discussion with professionals and development of the final version. The final version includes: user identification; social and health information; brief functional description (BFD); summary of the BFD; and PLPR results. Further testing of the final version will be conducted. The protocol standardizes the first contact between the user and the rehabilitation service. Systematic use of the protocol could also help to create a functional database that would allow comparisons between rehabilitation services and countries over time.

Home environment is an important setting for child participation. This study investigated the participation of Brazilian children and adolescents in household self-care (SC) and family-care (FC) tasks. Interviews were conducted with 109 caregivers of children and adolescents ages 6 to 14 years residing in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). Multiple regression models revealed that a greater number of FC tasks were performed by children and adolescents (R2 = .23) from families who did not have a housekeeper and those in which the mothers did not work outside of the home; children and adolescents from this subgroup also received less assistance from the caregivers (R2 = .21) and showed greater independence in task performance (R2 = .20). On average, Brazilian children and adolescents participate in about half of the SC and 25% the FC household tasks. Factors related to family structure and child's age were associated with task performance, caregiver assistance, and child and adolescent independence in household tasks.

Individuals with different impairments are working in the formal and/or informal market despite physical and attitudinal barriers. To date, few studies have addressed this situation from the perspective of the individuals. Apprehend factors that restrict work performance in the perspective of workers with impairments and identify the strategies employed and the difficulties faced. Individuals with impairment who exercised paid activities. Thirty semi-structured interviews and eleven observations of individuals in work activities. Limitations stemming from participants' disability and health status had an influence over their execution of tasks, but did not compromise work performance. Environmental factors that impacted as facilitators or barriers were: lack of preparation of colleagues, employers, education and rehabilitation systems; attitudes and coexistence; accessibility, implementation of land use policies, urban structures and transportation; products and technology; and ...

To compare the pattern of self-care performance in normal children and children with cerebral palsy (CP). 142 normal children and 33 children with CP were evaluated by 22 items from the self-care scale of the PEDI functional test. Rasch methodology transformed scores into interval measures of difficulty from 0 to 100 (logit). Spearman rank correlation coefficient compared the order of logits in the two groups. Eleven items showed significant differences in the logit values received. Out of these, 7 items showed relative difficulty values greater in the group of children with CP and 4 items showed relative difficulty values greater among normal children. A significant correlation was observed in the order of the 22 items displayed in the two interval scales. The results suggest that the development of self-care functional activities may be influenced by the presence of CP. These results may support assessment and intervention strategies for children with neuromotor disorders.

One of the benefits of item response theory (IRT) applications in scale development is the greater transparency of resulting scores. This feature allows translation of a total score on a particular scale into a profile of probable item responses with relative ease, for example by using the variable map that often is part of IRT analysis output. Although there have been a few examples in the literature using variable maps to enrich clinical interpretation of individual functional assessment scores, this feature of IRT output has received very limited application in rehabilitation research. The present paper illustrates the application of variable maps to support more in-depth interpretation of functional assessment scores in research and clinical contexts. Two examples are presented from an outcome prediction study conducted during the standardization of a new functional assessment for elementary school students with disabilities, the School Function Assessment. Two different applica...
