Discípulo de Pablo de Rojas y heredero de su taller, fue a su vez maestro de Alonso de Mena y otros grandes escultores de la primera mitad del siglo XVII granadino.

El "Lisipo andaluz". «Asombro de los siglos presentes y admiración de los por venir», como afirmaba el mercedario fray Juan Guerrero a mediados del siglo XVII. Juan Martínez Montañés supone, para la escultura e imaginería españolas de nuestros Siglos de Oro, un referente esencial e indiscutible ya desde sus propios contemporáneos. Creador de una amplia escuela, cuyas formas, modelos y volúmenes aún se encuentran plenamente activos entre los imagineros de la actualidad, Montañés sin embargo supone la bisagra esencial que encaja y comunica un manierismo exquisito, intelectual, minoritario y heredero del humanismo renacentista del siglo XVI —su primera obra conservada y documentada, el San Cristóbal de la iglesia colegial del Salvador de Sevilla, es de 1589— con el sensual y explosivo barroco desarrollado por sus discípulos, seguidores e imitadores. Canon, serenidad, armonía: tres vocablos que definen a la perfección la obra refinada, espiritual, contenida, magistral de Montañés. Las llamadas a la meditación, a la introspección, a la reflexión serán intrínsecamente propias a la religiosidad intelectual contemporánea al Concilio de Trento (1545-1563), viéndose divulgadas, de manera activamente propagandística, por congregaciones religiosas como la Compañía de Jesús (fundada en 1534) o por teólogos y pensadores como fray Luis de Granada (Granada, 1504-Lisboa, 1588). A este impulso eclesiástico debemos añadir la formulación teórica de una iconografía expresiva y potente, que asumiría el pintor Francisco Pacheco (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 1564-Sevilla, 1644) con la redacción de su influyente tratado "Arte de la Pintura" (impreso póstumamente en Sevilla por Simón Fajardo en 1649, que corrió manuscrito desde su redacción en torno a 1620-1622). Escultor, entallador, retablista: Montañés, el imaginero —creador de imágenes, "imago", que para los clásicos eran depositarias de un innegable pellizco de humanidad e incluso de divinidad— artista total, se nos exhibe en su obra como el pionero que fue; como el responsable de convertir las alejadas, elevadas y tantas veces frías y ajenas imágenes devocionales en carne palpitante, cercana, venerable y sugestiva para la devoción, para la contemplación, la admiración o el rezo. Carne sagrada, divina, que hoy felizmente aún habita entre nosotros.
