Being aware of the tradition of research on spirituality in theology and the existence of detailed publications and research concerning psychology of religion and religiosity in psychology as well as other sciences in Poland, the authors propose the recognition and adaptation of the FICA tool for spirituality research. The belief in the importance of deepening the knowledge and providing tools to research spirituality of human existence results from a long practice of the authors in palliative and hospital care. Understanding a difficulty in operationalizing the category of spirituality, they attempted at searching for a method that would be applicable to persons at the end of their lives as well as to all the suffering. Having analyzed the research tools built by Polish science as well as available ones on religiosity and spirituality the following paper aims at presenting the unknown FICA tool (F – Faith and Believe, I – Importance, C – Community, A – Address in Care) in Poland by...

The growth of life expectancy in Central Eastern Europe and increase in the number of older people in that region are the consequences of changes in the 1990s period, connected to transition from the communism into a market economy. Central Eastern Europe is already facing consequences of fast ageing and insufficient development of state health care and social services. Those result in gaps in the provision of end-of-life care and overburden of family caregivers. This essay addresses gaps in end-of-life care, showing the development of hospice-palliative care on one side, and highlighting main problems with long-term care on the other. There is scarce support for informal caregivers and lack of cooperation between health and social care. End-of-life care is over medicalized in hospice-palliative care and hardly existing in long-term care. Dying is more a social than medical event, and as such, it should be cared for by compassionate communities, encouraging cooperation of profession...

In the last few years many researches have emerged in which quality of life of terminally ill patients has been a main focus of attention. Some evaluation methods have been used in elderly population too. Our paper presents results of a study concerning the problem of QL of patients in the terminal state in institutional care for elderly people. The terminally ill over the age 65 were compared with those of the same aged men and women without cancer and those aged 64 and younger suffering from cancer too. Self-assessment of health and QL was compared with objective evaluation of the health state. We hope this study will give the opportunity to make the QL of our patients better and quality of care more effective.

The process of passing loss and bereavement is a difficult period for any human being. At this particular time, it is important to remember to support the child in dealing with loss and grief. Unfortunately, it can happen that the closest environment, such as family and school is not able to help the mourner properly, especially the children and youth in this silent fight. Support from family and teachers is as needed as help from the various professionals. This article is a review of forms of support in bereaved children and youth, with emphasize on practical methods performed by educators. The paper includes the analysis of forms used in order to help bereaved children in returning to better function in society.

Creating programmes combining penitentiary area with hospice-palliative care and voluntary work in different countries is an interesting direction of implementing the ideals of hospice. The first part of this publication refers to the description of major initiatives for the reintegration of prisoners through hospice voluntary work. In 2009 Poland was awarded ‘The Crystal Scales of Justice’ thanks to a programme called ‘WHAT’ (hospice voluntary work as a tool of acceptance and tolerance for people leaving penal institutions). The project was aimed at social reintegration of prisoners through volunteering for a hospice located outside prison. The results of several years of satisfactory cooperation between the hospice and prison in Gdansk were passed over to penitentiary counsellors and hospice teams in ten cities in Poland. The results of the initial research show that involving prisoners in a hospice team, where they face suffering and dying, improves their psychosocial functioning...

The need for mobilization of local communities to the aging population and the increase in the number of subsidiaries and dependent in their homes, raises the question about the role of volunteering and its associated social forces and its possible impact on improving care at the end of life in Poland. Is the successful operation of palliative and hospice care and change of public awareness to the area of social action can be deployed to sensitize society to the needs of all persons at the end of life? What conditions must be met in order to difficult in many respects the situation seriously ill patients and informal caregivers, especially in home care, would support the involvement of volunteers from the local communities? Is it possible the involvement of the parish, which is one of the basic elements of local communities, to create a strategy for integrated care at end of life with the participation of volunteer work? Chaplaincy of health care and social assistance in Poland is facing new challenges related to education and the introduction of spiritual care. Hospice chaplaincy has developed a culture of collaboration, which helps in new educational methods for chaplains. Pastoral team of clergy and laity is the subject of this work, when the traditional chaplaincy is combined with teamwork and recognition of the spiritual needs in care. The search for new forms of pastoral care during postgraduate studies in pastoral care will lead to changes only when it will be consistently implemented. Due to changes in society chaplains should be able to meet the needs of spiritual seekers or people unrelated to any of the faith-communities. To explore these needs the right tools are needed and such spiritual needs tools, adapted to the Polish language will be presented, with the hope that they could be useful in the pastoral and spiritual care.

Since 1981, in Poland exist modern hospice-palliative care, and to its foundation contributed among others Cardinal Karol Wojtyla - Pope John Paul II, and Dr. Cicely Saunders. How come from the actions of a group of volunteers we could arrive to several hundred professional stationary and home care centers for adults and children? In Solidarity (Gdansk 2015, available as open source at: www.fundacjahospicyjna.pl) is the first book published in Polish and English as illustration of this phenomenon. It consists of five parts. The first part is a description of the history of the hospice movement in Poland, showing the particular role of the Catholic Church and the influence as social movement of "Solidarity". The hospice-palliative care was after years included in the healthcare system in Poland, being still referred to as a social movement by a number of charitable and educational activities. Memories and thoughts of 26 people: volunteers, employees and leaders of care, sho...

In addition to the traditional model of individual pastoral assistance chaplains exist in many countries, pastoral care team with the participation of clergy and laity, open to ecumenical and interreligijną cooperation for the sake of spiritual and religious needs of residents. Also in Poland, pastoral care teams should take care not to, with respect for religious and cultural diversity. In order to do this effectively we need new tools to study the spiritual needs, in addition to the traditional tools of pastoral care and sacramental care. There are numerous tools for studying religion, but the lack of working tools study the spiritual needs of the residents. Such an assumption meets the qualitative questionnaire FICA by prof. Christina M. Puchalski. His adaptation into Polish can help you turn a practical spiritual dimension in the care process.

Hospice and palliative care in Central and Eastern European countries benefits from volunteers involved in a variety of services. The variety of volunteering across the region reflects diverse political, economic, and legal situations in post-communist countries. Poland led palliative care in the 1980s with other countries following in the 1990s. Polish palliative care started with volunteers, the Catholic Church and the country’s first non-governmental organizations running home centres with care incorporated into health care systems after the democratic changes of 1989. That brought financing from the national health insurance with a greater role for paid staff. Poland has played a leading role in the Central and Eastern Europe in the development of palliative care and hospice volunteering. Volunteers across the region now work together with paid staff in various forms of hospice and palliative care centres providing patient care, psychosocial support, and are engaged in charity w...

The authors of the article undertook the task of the analyzing the current research on economic migration of Poles to Great Britain. The analyzed phenomenon was considered in the perspective of a difficult situation according to Tadeusz Tomaszewski which allows us look at the economic migration dynamically considering environmental (socio-cultural) and individual (psychological) factors. The economic migration is presented as a difficult situation because it is new, complex and usually long-term and involves a lot of varying internal and external conditions. Many factors affect the course of migration stemming from the country of origin and host country. The most important ones have been characterized within the text. The final conclusions refer to normalizing conditions of emigration which depend on harmonization of the three elements: tasks resulting from migration, environmental conditions and migrant competences.

11 Background: Real life observations suggest hospice caregiving may result in physical health deterioration of family caregivers; they are less likely to participate in health-related initiatives and frequently don’t benefit from the most optimal medical care. Data reporting caregivers’ medical needs are rather scarce. Methods: The estimation of needs for specialist medical care aimed at family caregivers was carried out based on the activity called Open Day of Health Prophylaxis (ODHP – free consultations with specialists, ultrasound examinations and mammography) held annually at Rev. Eugeniusz Dutkiewicz SAC Hospice, Gdańsk, Poland during three consecutive years (2014 - 2018). In total, 715 medical consultations (median: 3 per caregiver, range: 1 - 6), 172 ultrasound, and 31 mammogram examinations were provided). The level of satisfaction expressed by the ODHP participants was also analyzed. Demographic, medical data, and involvement in the caregiving were analyzed based on consu...

There is a lack of studies evaluating the prevalence of smoking habit among Polish priests. Due to difficulties in receiving permission from catholic authorities to perform questionnaire study we attempted to assess the prevalence of cigarette smoking among priests from one religious congregation. The aim of the study was also to analyze factors influencing smoking habits in this group. The anonymous questionnaire was sent to all Polish Pallotins and students of Pallotin Seminary in Ołtarzew. Only one fourth of them--138 subjects in the age from 20 to 92 yrs (mean age 37.7 yrs)--answered the questionnaire. Among them were 72 priests aged 27-92 yrs. (mean age 50.7 yrs) and 66 students in the age 20-41 yrs (mean age 23.7 yrs.). The rate of current smokers among priests was 13.9%, including 11.1% of daily smokers and 2.8% occasional smokers. The rates of daily and occasional smokers among Seminary students were 4.5% and 6.1%, respectively. Cigarette smoking in the past was reported by ...

Our world is changing rapidly. The process of globalization also
affects more and more the daily life of those people who are not in
forefront of society. The effects of our globalized world can be experienced in the daily life of everyone. On the one hand there are many
positive aspects which improve the life of people and offer greater
opportunities for many. On the other hand, however, there are also
the dark sides of this globalization which are creating new distances
and enlarging the gap between the rich and the poor.
This changing scenario places a greater challenge before the
Church and its mission in our post-modern world. (...) The vastness and variety of the socio-charitable activities performed by Pallottines over the years, and still present in all the continents, is too big to be covered in this small publication. Its intention, however, is to outline some basic reflections on the themes related to socio-charitable apostolate in SAC,
to acknowledge those great and unique efforts and at the same time
motivate one another towards this apostolate which is so close to the
heart of Jesus.

In Solidarity. Hospice-Palliative Care in Poland, Gdansk, 2015, 437 pages.

More than 400 palliative and hospice centres, thousands of employees and volunteers forming interdisciplinary teams caring for the terminally ill and their families, and many thousands of people who have benefited from this care – such is the outcome of the 30 years’ plus existence of the hospice movement and palliative medicine in Poland.
Those years were filled with endeavours to give people approaching the end of their lives the chance of dying with dignity, without pain, surrounded by their close ones, with no regard for their age, sex, religion or wealth. These were years of co-operation, combining professional medical and non-medical assistance with the commitment of volunteers, while preserving the common goal of interdisciplinary teams.
The editors’ intention was to present the history of the establishment of hospice-palliative care in Poland as broadly as possible: by identifying its sources and inspirations, through the personal experiences of people involved in end-of-life care and the stories of particular palliative and hospice centres and the organizations supporting them. We encourage you to read the content of this unique publication.
