Au Canada, entre les années 1880 et 1990, plus de 150 000 enfants ont été élèves dans des écoles résidentielles désignées par le gouvernement fédéral comme pensionnats autochtones. Au Québec, on estime que cela a concerné environ 13 000 enfants. Ce livre est consacré à l'expérience particulière du Québec, à ces 13 000 enfants, aux pensionnats qu'ils ont fréquentés, aux adultes qu'ils sont devenus, aux différents acteurs qui ont participé à leur scolarisation et à l'héritage que cette période leur laisse, et nous laisse. Ce livre n'a pas vocation de dénoncer, mais de participer au vaste projet national, lancé par la Commission de vérité et réconciliation, de faire connaître l'histoire et les séquelles des pensionnats. Il veut inciter à la réflexion à partir de travaux de recherche et ouvrir des champs d'investigation pour améliorer les connaissances, afin que la blessure se referme, dans un futur de relations saines avec les peuples autochtones. L'ouvrage de l'anthropologue Marie-Pierre Bousquet évoque la modification de la perception de l'espace par les Anicinabek durant la longue transition entre nomadisme et sédentarité, le passage de la vie dans le bois sur leurs territoires de chasse au confinement sur des réserves ou des établissements, ainsi que les effets de la colonisation sur leur langue, leur culture, leur mode de vie, leur éducation et leur santé. L'auteure décrit la vie actuelle des Anicinabek dans leurs différents habitats, la réserve, la ville et le bois, ainsi que le fossé qui s'est établi entre les générations, celle qui a connu la vie sur le territoire de chasse familial, celle qui a vécu les pensionnats, et celle des jeunes pris entre une tradition idéalisée et l'appel de la modernité, à la recherche d'une identité qui leur soit propre. Elle y aborde enfin le futur des communautés anicinabek, leur volonté de protéger leur langue et leur culture, de réduire les problèmes sociaux au sein des réserves, de faire aboutir par la négociation les conflits politiques qui perdurent avec la société et les différents paliers de gouvernement du Canada et du Québec.

Jusqu’à récemment, les chercheurs avaient tendance à vouloir démontrer les effets dévastateurs de l’évangélisation sur les systèmes de croyances premiers ou, au contraire, à tenter de mettre au jour, sous la façade chrétienne, les restes d’un substrat religieux originel.
En réalité, les dynamiques religieuses chez les autochtones américains apparaissent bien plus complexes et subtiles. De nos jours, des réseaux religieux sont en voie d’émergence ou de consolidation. Ils s’inscrivent dans un contexte de mondialisation, mettant en contact les autochtones avec des spiritualités et des croyances issues de tous les continents. Par une curieuse inversion historique, l’expérience religieuse n’est plus un facteur de déstructuration et d’assimilation, mais constitue un facteur de reconstruction sociale et politique.
À une époque où les autochtones des Amériques et d’ailleurs multiplient leurs échanges spirituels, il est paradoxal de constater combien les chercheurs demeurent mal outillés pour comprendre ces phénomènes contemporains. Quel est le contexte sociologique de ces dynamiques religieuses ? Quelle en est la profondeur historique ? Quels sont les enracinements de ce mouvement dans les mythes et les rites traditionnels ?
Cet ouvrage réunit les contributions de chercheurs travaillant du sud au nord de l’Amérique autochtone. À travers leurs textes, qui abordent différents systèmes religieux non cloisonnés sur eux-mêmes (chamanisme, catholicisme, pentecôtisme, mouvements évangéliques, panindianisme), se donnent à voir l’originalité et le dynamisme des spiritualités autochtones contemporaines.

Appréhender l’existence du chamanisme seulement d’après une définition ethnologique classique du terme, c’est-à-dire comme un système de pensée mis en actes, reflète des catégories conceptuelles élaborées dans le cadre d’ontologies occidentales, ce qui est réducteur et incomplet. En effet, selon les informateurs anicinabek, peu importe que le chamanisme disparaisse comme système de pensée ou comme pratique : ce qui en fait son fondement continuera à exister en tant que partie du monde naturel.

Depuis les années 1800, les Anicinapek ont connu diverses épidémies qui ont laissé des traces dan... more Depuis les années 1800, les Anicinapek ont connu diverses épidémies qui ont laissé des traces dans leur mémoire et leurs pratiques, ravivées lors du confinement du printemps 2020. Ces traces diffèrent de celles laissées dans les chroniques des auteurs allochtones : les autorités gouvernementales et ecclésiastiques les ont pensés sans ressources, sans savoirs et sans médicaments efficaces. Dans une perspective de décolonisation des savoirs, nous remettons en question l’hégémonie du discours allochtone sur les épidémies historiques chez les Autochtones en explorant comment les Anicinapek ont conceptualisé la notion d’épidémies, ainsi que les pratiques qu’ils pouvaient déployer face à elles. Cet article se fonde en priorité sur un corpus de données formé à partir de deux types de sources : des récits oraux recueillis lors d’enquêtes longitudinales ; et des documents écrits par des Anicinapek. À partir de cet angle émique, sont exposées les assises idéologiques et cosmologiques du système de santé anicinape, de la moitié du xixe siècle jusqu’aux années 1970.
