The creep properties of as-cast Ti-48Al-2Cr (at%) alloy which had been strengthen with addition of 2 at% Cr were investigated. Tensile creep experiments were performed in air at temperatures from 600–800°C and initial stresses ranging from 150 to 180 MPa. Stress exponent and activation energy were both measured. Data indicates that the alloy exhibits steady state creep behavior and the steady state creep rate is found to depend on the applied load and temperature. The measured power law stress exponent for steady state creep rate is found to be close to 3 and the apparent activation energy for creep is calculated to be 15.7 kJ/mol. The creep resistance of the present alloy was also compared with binary Ti-48Al (at%) to evaluate the effect of Cr addition on creep resistance of TiAl. It is concluded that addition of 2 at% of Cr does not have significant effect on the creep resistance of TiAl.

A participatory questionnaire was used to study small stock farming systems and ethno- veterinary knowledge in two districts in the centre of Mozambique where many farmers were returning to their land after the end of the civil war. Eighty nine per cent of farmers kept village chickens with an average flock size of 14 birds. The majority of farmers provided housing and supplementary feed for their chickens. Reproduction was highest in the period from April to July. Constraints to village chicken production included Newcastle disease (ND), cold weather, lice, fleas and fowl pox. Traditional remedies for ND are presented. A PARTICIPATORY questionnaire was used to collect information on farming systems and traditional methods of small stock production in the districts of Angonia and Tsangano in Tete Province in May, 1996 (Harun and Massango 1996). ABSTRACT L 18 orthogonal array in mix level of Taguchi robust design method was carried out to optimize experimental conditions for the preparation of polymer blend composite. Tensile strength and neutron absorption of the composite were the properties of interest. Filler size, filler loading, ball mixing time and dispersion agent concentration were selected as parameters or factors which are expected to affect the composite properties. As a result of Taguchi analysis, filler loading was the most influencing parameter on the tensile strength and neutron absorption. The least influencing was ball-mixing time. The optimal conditions were determined by using mix-level Taguchi robust design method and a polymer composite with tensile strength of 6.33 MPa was successfully prepared. The composite was found to fully absorb thermal neutron flux of 1.04 x 10 5 n/cm 2 /s with only 2 mm in thickness. In addition, the filler was also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis (EDX). ABSTRAK Tatasusunan ortogon L 18 dalam tahap campuran kaedah rekabentuk teguh Taguchi telah dilakukan untuk mengoptimumkan keadaan-keadaan eksperimen bagi persediaan rencam campuran polimer. Kekuatan tegangan dan penyerapan neutron rencam merupakan ciri-ciri yang penting pencerapan. Saiz pengisi, pemuatan pengisi, masa adunan kaedah bebola dan agen penyebaran dipilih kerana parameter atau faktor-faktor yang mana dijangka menjejaskan ciri-ciri komposit. Hasil dari analisis Taguchi, pemuatan pengisi adalah paling mempengaruhi parameter kekuatan tegangan dan penyerapan neutron. Masa adunan kaedah bebola dilihat memberi pengaruh yang tersedikit. Keadaan-keadaan optimum telah ditentukan dengan menggunakan campuran tahap kaedah rekabentuk teguh Taguchi dan satu polimer komposit dengan kekuatan tegangan 6.33 MPa telah berjaya disediakan. Komposit didapati menyerap sepenuhnya fluks neutron terma 1.04 x 10 5 n/cm 2 /s dengan hanya ketebalan 2 mm. Sebagai tambahan, pengisi juga dicirika dengan kaedah mikroskop elektron pengimbasa (SEM) dan penganalisis unsur (EDX).

ABSTRACT Thermoplastic natural rubber sample is found isotropic based on SAXS pattern. Morphological parameter was obtained based on ideal lamellar morphology using 1-D correlation function. The fitting was carried out using Porod tail model and Vonk for back-extrapolated model. It is found that the long period value is 15.7nm which is comparable to results obtained from Lorents corrected profile, 20nm. Crystalline thickness and amorphous thickness was found as 13.4 and 2.31nm respectively. ABSTRAK Sampel getah asli termoplastik didapati isotropi berdasarkan corak SAXS. Parameter mofologikal diperolehi berdasarkan morfologi lamela unggul dengan menggunakan rangkap korelasi 1-D. Pemadanan dijalankan menggunakan ekor Porod model dan Vonk untuk belakang mengekstrapolasikan model. Ia didapati bahawa nilai jangka masa yang panjang ialah 15.7nm keputusan-keputusan setanding dengan yang mana diperolehi dari Lorents membetulkan profil, 20nm. Ketebalan berhablur dan ketebalan amorfus didapati kerana 13.4 dan 2.31nm masing-masing.

Silver nanoparticles protected by Tetradecyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide (TTAB) were prepared in a one-phase electrochemical system. Electrochemical procedure, based on the dissolution of a metallic anode in an appropriate solvent, has been used to get silver nanoparticles. It is possible to get different particle size by changing the current density. The optical properties of the silver Nanoparticles were investigated by UV-Vis and Photoluminescence (PL) Spectroscopy. Absorption peak were found 424 nm which confirm the presence of Ag nanoparticles. The structural properties of the samples were carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. XRD confirmed the preferential growth of Ag nanoparticles whose average size is ≈ 20 nm in the <111> orientation as well as purity of silver clusters.

Phragmites australis is an invasive wetland plant and allelopathy appears to contribute to its invasiveness. We studied dynamics of physicochemical characteristics and phytotoxicity through residue decomposition of Phragmites with and without soil under different conditions and density over time. Physicochemical variables (water-soluble phenolics, dissolved organic carbon, specific ultraviolet absorbance, pH, electrical conductivity, osmotic potential and some anions, namely PO43–, Cl–, NO2–, NO3– and SO42–) of extracts were more consistent and showed normal range in aerobic rather than anaerobic conditions. ‘Residue alone’ and ‘residue with soil’ extracts exhibited significant inhibition on germination and growth of Poa labillardierei and Lactuca sativa initially but reduced over time in aerobic conditions whereas the inhibition increased sharply and remained almost stable in anaerobic conditions (P ≤ 0.001). Regression analyses showed that water-soluble phenolics were a significant predictor of the inhibitory effects on germination and growth of tested species compared with other variables in the extracts. Long-term decomposed residues exhibited significant effects on germination and growth of Melaleuca ericifolia (P ≤ 0.01) depending on residue density in soil. The results demonstrated that decomposition condition and soil incorporation coupled with residue density may play a crucial role over time in dynamics of physicochemical variables and associated phytotoxicity. The study contributes to understanding of the ecological consequences of phytotoxins in residue decomposition, partially explaining the invasion process of Phragmites in wetlands and thereby improving wetland management.

The failure took place on a welded elbow pipe which exhibited a catastrophic transverse rupture. The failure was located on the welding HAZ region, parallel to the welding path. Branching cracks were detected at the edge of the rupture area. Deposits of corrosion products were also spotted. The optical microscope analysis showed the presence of transgranular failures which were related to the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and were predominantly caused by the welding residual stress. The significant difference in hardness between the welded area and the pipe confirmed the findings. Moreover, the failure was also caused by the low Mo content in the stainless steel pipe which was detected by means of spark emission spectrometer.
