The aim of the paper is to underline the links between fictional worlds theory and Mario Lavagetto's critical work. Retracing Lavagetto's literary theory through some of his essays, the analysis focuses on some key aspects such as thresholds, lies, borders, and blanks, that allow drawing several connections with fictional worlds theory. A specific attention is given to the patterns Lavagetto, as a literary critic, explores in his books with the reader's help, interpreted as openings towards other possible worlds.

L'articolo propone un'analisi del tema del deserto e delle sue diverse manifestazioni nell'opera di Don DeLillo attraverso un campione di romanzi esemplari, pubblicati tra gli anni Settanta e l'inizio degli anni Duemila. Dopo un'introduzione volta a contestualizzare il deserto alla luce di un più ampio dibattito sulla rappresentazione dello spazio, nei paragrafi successivi si insiste soprattutto sulle insidie e i miraggi del luogo, teatro di una ricerca di autenticità che, per molti personaggi di DeLillo, si conclude in modo fallimentare. Oltre a una specifica attenzione ai testi, viene dato spazio ad alcune intuizioni antropologiche che permettono di operare una riflessione più ampia su DeLillo, scrittore capace come pochi altri di interpretare le dinamiche del mondo globalizzato, e di delineare, attraverso un recupero delle «storie sepolte», un possibile contraltare rispetto alla fuga e all'abbandono nichilistico.

The essay aims at exploring how some romance\u2019s recurring elements interact with the narrative of historical facts in Don DeLillo\u2019s Libra and Emmanuel Carr\ue8re\u2019s Limonov. Firstly, I will briefly focus on the role that romance might play in contemporary novels based on historical facts. Secondly, I will investigate some key aspects of the two novels. Throughout the work, the archetype of quest is deeply considered with the intention to illustrate how romance can be deployed to critically enlighten the historical context

Il saggio prende spunto da due romanzi e un film statunitensi di fine Novecento, Underworld di DeLillo, Pastorale americana di Roth e Fight Club di Fincher, per sviluppare una riflessione sul rapporto tra realta e finzione prestando particolare attenzione alla tematizzazione della violenza. All’analisi degli aspetti formali e strutturali delle opere si alternano considerazioni di carattere tematico. In tutti e tre i casi emerge un significativo rimando a un mondo «la fuori», caotico e non consolante, contrapposto alle esistenze ordinarie dei personaggi, avvertite come inautentiche.

Scrap, as a residual and not easy to place element, is a common topic in a great number of works in contemporary fiction, where it takes on a precise meaning: waste. This paper aims to analyse this theme focusing on some emblematic passages of two maximalist novels published at the end of 20th Century: Underworld, by Don DeLillo, and Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace. In the former, Nick Shay's job consists of the disposal of waste, which becomes something that questions the concept of functionality (Scaffai 139). Moreover, waste becomes the tangible equivalent of adolescent traumas, surfacing all over again. In Infinite Jest, the stories told by the drug addicts who live in Ennet House, the real "scraps" of the novel, represent an effort made by characters to re-elaborate narratively their suffering, giving voice to their own experience. Waste symbolizes the return of the rejected, what was relegated to the margins of the community or characters' lives; it becomes a means to advocate for space in the complex plots of the novels.

forma di desiderio (longing) in due classici della narrativa contemporanea: American Pastoral di Philip Roth e Underworld di Don DeLillo, entrambi pubblicati nel 1997.
Dopo un’iniziale contestualizzazione, in cui vengono delineati alcuni paradossi della svolta narrativa, l’analisi si concentra sulla costruzione formale dei due testi. Un’attenzione particolare viene rivolta al modo in cui il rapporto tra trama e desiderio illumina alcuni aspetti cruciali del contesto storico intercettato dai due romanzi.

Come trasformare l’esperienza in scrittura? Quale rapporto c’è tra il desiderio tipicamente umano di racconti e la congerie del reale? In che modo la scrittura narrativa può diventare uno strumento di intelligenza del mondo là fuori? Sono queste alcune delle domande a cui tenta di rispondere il libro, mettendole alla prova sul terreno della letteratura, in un viaggio articolato in due tappe. Una prima mappatura degli orizzonti in cui si muove il paradigma narrativo, con una particolare attenzione ai presupposti storico-culturali e alle trasformazioni che investono il romanzo negli ultimi decenni del Novecento, e una successiva analisi delle forme che, concentrandosi soprattutto su alcuni casi esemplari del romanzo statunitense di fine millennio (Don DeLillo, Philip Roth, David Foster Wallace), ha l’ambizione di rivendicare la specificità del discorso letterario nell’era dello storytelling.
