How is it possible that readers plunge into literary texts and experience them at first hand?
Based upon this question, the “habilitation” explores the immediacy of the psalms. Immediacy is based on the fact that readers can identify with the situations, experiences, emotions, characters and movements expressed in the texts. Therefore, the project aimed to find answer to the following research question: Which aspects of identification can be found in the psalms of the Hebrew Bible? So the aim of this project was it to analyse strategies of the texts, which enable readers to identify with the text-world described in the psalms.

In this article I intend to show how female and male protagonists are portrayed in the poems of the Song of Songs narrating a plot. After giving specific reasons for choosing Cant 2:8–14; 3:1–5 and 5:2–8, textual criticism and syntactic and semantic analysis of these texts are presented. A synchronic perspective is used to bring out elements of the texts which are repeated in the poems for several times and therefore can be linked. Finally I read these three poems as one story – this way discovering also problematic and disturbing parts of the Song of Songs and differentiating the conventional understanding of the biblical book as a celebration of mutual desire and fulfillment.

The article starts with a definition of „violence“ in the German language and later on presents seven theses through which it should be easier to understand texts of the Old Testament that speak about violence. The Bible addresses, as a realistic book, all human issues and anchors them in the horizon of faith. Therefore, also violence in all its different forms is mentioned in the Bible in a very dramatic way. Starting with the connexion between speech and violence also psalms of lamentation will be described. Stories of the Book of Judges about male and female violent activities will be connected with current analyses of gender and critical men’s studies. (Sexual) violence against women (2Sam 13) and violence in the images of God (Ex 14) will also be presented. At the end, prophetic texts which speak about hope and peace present ahimsa and the overcoming of violence.

This paper contributes to the critical gender discourse by aiming to highlight the relationship between acts of violence and the construction of maleness and femaleness in Jdg 4. After defining how to speak about violence and gender in the Bible, the presentation of Jael in Jdg 4:17–22 will be analysed through a narrative text analysis, through an inner-biblical intertextual approach and through the comparison between the commentaries on Jdg 4 and the biblical text itself. Combining the theory about violence and gender with these three analytical steps, the paper attempts to critically evaluate the effects of gender stereotyping in the discourse about violent women.

While Lady Wisdom, Zion and Jerusalem, for example, are well-known and frequently analyzed personifications in the Old Testament, the study of personifications in the book of psalms is a research desideratum. After presenting the theoretical background of the term personification with special focus on the function of the verb, I will present the results of verb personifications in the psalter followed by a textual analysis of the personified virtues of steadfast love, truth, justice and peace in Ps 85:11. One example of the encounter between justice and peace in the form of a kiss, from Christian reception history, forms the last part of the article. The paper aims to contribute to the broad and intense discussion of metaphor analysis in psalms research on the three levels of theory, of textual analysis of the whole book of psalms and of Ps 85,11 and the reception history of metaphors.

Storytelling in the psalter is usually attributed to those psalms which relate stories of the history of Israel. Narratology, the theory and procedure of studying narrative representations, is usually applied to narratives. However, there are certain features in the psalms, which allow us to define them as narrative texts and therefore examine them by means of narratology. This paper aims to contribute to a genre-overlapping approach towards poetry by means of opening the way to showing the benefits, as well as limitations of narratology applied to poetical texts by applying the narratological categories narrator/ narrative voice, plot/build-up of tension, characters and characterization, as well as time and space to Psalm. 64.

The psalms are often called into texts frozen dialogues. Therefore, they offer a special communicative design in which the God of Israel is characterized by actions that he/she does, actions that are desired and requested of him/her, as well as by divine names and attributes. After presenting some core theoretical concepts regarding the character-analysis in literary texts, the exemplary analysis of Ps 86, which stands out through its chain of imperatives and adjectives referring to God, will be implemented. These results will be combined with the outcomes of the analysis of all imperatives addressing God in the psalter including negations, as well as of the analysis of different names and appellations for God in the psalms. Therewith, the paper aims to contribute to the analysis of the character of God in the psalms from a narratological point of view, which is quite a fresh approach within the discourse of analysis of poetry.
