Années 70 et 80ʼ, University of Lausanne, 10-12 October 2019.

This communication explores the political connections and intellectual exchanges that second-wave feminists established between them since the early 1970s. Particularly, I will develop an in-depth analysis of some feminist international meetings held across Europe and the United States from the 1970s to the 1990s. Feminist international meetings, women's summer camps and collective vacations responded, since the early 1970s, to a clear transnational political strategy adopted by many social movements. Such meetings not only fostered new political and theoretical debates within feminist movements, but also encouraged the search for new forms of collective life, and new ideals of community, intimacy and solidarity. In this communication I would like to suggest that such encounters had a twofold role. On the one hand, by connecting feminists across national borders, they boosted the circulation and contamination of different practices and knowledges. On the other hand, they produced new empowering ways of living sexuality, bodies and desires, and enabled women to see their relationships with one another as newly significant and reimagine new ways of being as women and as lesbians.

We focus on these two countries of the South Europe, as both of them are currently seriously impacted – especially Greece – by economic and political crisis as a result of austerity policies. Meanwhile, it is necessary to point out their central role in European and National borders politics as receiving and transit countries for immigration flows/circulations .
Hence, taking into consideration the socio-political context, where migration has updated the power relation of race and the traditional class approach has undergone a profound transformation, and considering at the same time the genealogy of feminist movements, we aspire to problematize the political reception and the attempts of conceptualisation of intersectionality as critical theory and approach outside its original context. Departing from our research and struggle experiences, we are going to make an assessment of the political and methodological uses of intersectionality in both the university and the feminist movements to look for answers to challenging interrogations: how feminist politics have been transformed under the influence of these transformations in process? And how feminist politics are reconfigured within/via an intersectional reflection? Can we consider intersectionality a new entrance in the arsenal of feminist struggles?
We argue that intersectionality debates can radically trouble and question the tradition and the present of feminist struggles in contemporary Greece and Italy. Reflecting from the meaning that Afro-Caribbean poet Audre Lorde gave to the “differences between women”, we try to investigate the ways in which feminist movements can negotiate and built new forms of solidarity on the base of intersectionality.

This presentation aims to conceptualize the “triple positionality” of the feminist activist-researcher, to explore the nomadic movement between the spheres of the university and the social and political struggles and to focus on their frontier/borderline.
Departing from our personal experiences and from epistemological debates, we want to discuss the contradictions, the continuities, the barriers, the impasses and the new paths that we come across in this “coming and going”, especially when we propose to analyse realities that we are implicated in. What happens to the standpoint and to the self-consciousness/ definition of the feminist researcher when she/ he goes down to the arena of conflicts? How does she/he react when she/he encounters these two spheres - traditionally perceived and treated as separate entities from both a militant and academic
perspective?
In the era of the expansion of radical and critical studies and in the European context of the economic and political crisis, we find crucial to revisit these troubled trajectories. It is essential to wonder if the young, precarious activists researchers who rise a critical feminist knowledge rooted both in past and contemporary movements, have something new to bring to light concerning the ways we make theory in, within and for the struggles.

Paris7 University, along with the University of Toulouse, Aix-Marseille and Paris8, has played a leading role in France in the development of feminist studies and researches, promoting innovative and pioneering initiatives. On the 24th October 1973 the first French course in women’s history began at Paris7 with the provocative title: "Have women a history?" – on GEF (Groupe d’Études Féministes de Paris7) and historian Michelle Perrot initiative. This contribution wants to retrace «l'expérience Jussieu» as told by its protagonists during a conference which was held in Paris in 1997, stressing the scientific challenges that the birth of feminist studies in this university has issued to the academic traditionally masculine knowledges. I will depict in particular some focal points: the impact of the eruption of feminism within the human sciences; the experience of the two most important francophone journals in women's history: Pénélope (1979-1985) and Clio (1995 -); the struggle for the legitimacy of feminist studies within the academic scientific community and the debate on the risks of their institutionalization; the issues raised by the reception in the ‘80s of some government funds; the beginning of a new stage in 1985 with the creation of CEDEF (Centre d'Enseignement, de Documentation et de Recherches pour les Etudes Féministes), whose key strengths were and remain its interdisciplinary approach, the transnational focus and the intersectional perspective. I will move from this particular case study to explore and rethink more general current issues, such as the difficult attempt to conciliate a critical feminist practice with an academic scientific methodology still sceptical and reluctant towards a field of study that has uncompromisingly developed a new epistemology.

This contribution wants to retrace American feminist Betty Friedan’s fascinating biography and co... more This contribution wants to retrace American feminist Betty Friedan’s fascinating biography and controversial reflection, adopting as focal point the book which allowed her to become a strong reference for the Liberal Women's Rights Movement of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and at the same time made her an extremely discussed and criticized public figure within the new Radical Feminist Reflection: The Feminine Mystique (1964).
This brilliant work was able to bring to light the famous “problem that has no name”, the sense of frustration and incompleteness lived in ‘50s by many American middle-class women, placed in name of their docile and uncompetitive femininity within the domestic sphere of suburban reality, in order to ensure political and social stability to the so-called “American way of life”.
Can we really affirm that Betty Friedan has consciously removed part of her young radical engagement – as historian Daniel Horowitz affirmed in his Friedan’s provocative biography of 1998 – to embrace a more comfortable liberal feminist discourse? Can we actually consider The Feminine Mystique «the revolutionary manifesto of women's liberation», as it was by many defined? Is Friedan’s liberal analysis – aimed to examine the status of white heterosexual middle-class and educated American women – based on a primary exclusion according to class, race and sexual orientation? I will move from these still open questions to reconstruct the political debate which arose around Friedan’s work and her later commitment within the National Organization for Women (NOW), with a particular emphasis on the main criticisms to the structural limits of her political vision.

Années 70 et 80ʼ, University of Lausanne, 10-12 October 2019.
