The essay contains an interview to Gerlinde Mautner (WU − Vienna University) and Alan Partington (University of Bologna) given during the 2016 Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines (CADAAD) International Conference. The aim of the contribution is to critically discuss contemporary issues linked to the qualitative and quantitative approaches divide in linguistic research. These two notions are strickly connected and related to the broader category of the social imaginary since they are both a construct but also help shape academic research. Therefore, the following interview will tackle these issues in linguistic research and raise several questions concerning what both Corpus Linguistics and Discourse Analysis are but also about the nature of language analysis itself and, more specifically, the role of quantitative and qualitative analyses in linguistics. Through an in-depth analysis of the volume I riflessi di Black Mirror. Glossario su immaginari, culture e media della societa digitale (The Reflections of Black Mirror. A glossary of imaginaries, culture and media in the digital society) edited by Mario Tirino and Antonio Tramontana (2018), the paper sets out to investigate how the semantic nuclei of Black Mirror may be analysed in terms of a glossary confronting the existential conditions of modern technological civilization and the tuly radical challenges we face.

The paper explores three versions of Antigone staged in Ireland in 1984: Antigone: The Riot Act by Tom Paulin; Antigone: a version by Brendan Kennelly and Antigone by Carl Aidan Mathews. Rewriting, adapting or translating classics can represent a counterdiscoursive strategy used in crucial moment of a country’s history. In the three Irish plays Antigone’s persona springs out of the confrontation/opposition with both Creon (the institutional opponent) and Ismene (a sort of Antigone’s double). In the framework of Ireland as a postcolonial context, the paper investigates how this confrontation/opposition fits in Irish politics in the 80s.

Il contributo si propone di analizzare alcuni delle problematiche che nascono nella traduzione dei testi teatrali attraverso l’analisi di Translations (1980) opera del celebre commediografo irlandese Brian Friel, e della sua traduzione italiana (1996). Il testo teatrale e la relativa traduzione in italiano si prestano all’analisi di numerose questioni centrali che riguardano la traduzione teatrale: da quello meramente linguistico del passaggio dall’irlandese all’inglese a quello dell’intraducibilita culturale che diventa segno e atto scenico. Ci si propone di analizzare come tali questioni emergano nella traduzione in italiano e quale sia il ruolo del traduttore nel mediare tali concetti nello spazio teatrale.
