- See more at: http://www.ledizioni.it/prodotto/luciano-villani-le-borgate-del-fascismo-cartaceo/#sthash.xY1bnzBr.dpuf

The fascist regime supported a sort of a crusade against the presence of the barracks

The importance of the local context in which the shipyard stands seems to go beyond the issue of employment, embracing the physiognomy of a territory in its broadest sense, embedded in cultural and communal identity processes during a long period. This identity has flourished in the past two centuries and has been forged around the knowledge and special skills learned and passed down through generations by the Sestri Ponente shipyard workers. Although many of its constituent elements remained intact, Sestri Ponente eventually declined as a result of economic, productive and social changes.

Molte volte, dietro queste
In the years following 2008, urban practices inspired by the direct action
method received new lymph in Italy. By means of them, the social actors try
to satisfy their needs immediately, instead of waiting passively the times and
the decisions of the authority. Several times behind these practices there is
a long history of antecedents that date back to the high points of past social
conflicts. The target of the contribution is to identify, among the “forms of direct
social action” historically detectable in the Roman case in terms of the housing
and services, those of which it is possible to verify a recovery in the present, to
proceed with a comparison, to analyze the specificities of the phase, the actors
involved, the processes of change, in an attempt to create a dialogue between
history and social sciences in the area of urban studies.

Censuses of shacks (baracche) in Rome can be studied via numerous analytical approaches. In this article, we use this type of source to gain deeper insight into the attitudes of the political and administrative institutions dealing with the spread of shantytowns in the city of Rome. Their decision to carry out specific censuses, and the objectives of these operations, testify to their singular perception of the phenomenon. Above all, it was their desire to define the shacks as an object of investigation, or the very absence of clearly defined criteria for registering them, that tell us much about the recurrent problems posed by this particular social reality.

Places strongly connoted from an architectural and urban standpoint, the roman borgate represent a privileged observatory through which to explore the the housing cultures of an important part of the public city destined for the lower classes. A difficult way of dwelling charged with many complications but which, starting from the post World War II period, is also characterized by the spread of a series of informal practices among the tenants revealing a specific family and housing cultures.
They are an expression of certain habits, the needs and conceptions of living, they configure on one side a collective strategies for the access to the public buildings and family rootedness in the territory and a different relationship between the public and private on the other sphere; they also contributed to the sedimentation of a deep-rooted sense of belonging to these places.
The reconstruction of this social action and its outcomes therefore provides an important interpretation to understand the characters and peculiarities of this residential universe The period investigated was marked by the race for welfare and the expansion of consumption, to which the different social classes did not participate in equal measure.
The starvation of the Borgate did not cease to be represented at the movies in a sort of prolongation of concerns and social imaginations that belonged to the period of the war and the long post-war period.
The consumption and the eating habits of the inhabitants of the borgate allow to glimpse lights and shadows of modernization.

The official borgate built in Rome during the Fascism period are places strongly characterised from the symbolic perspective. The story of their birth, the result of a complex social construction, gave an accomplished form to the self-representations of the inhabitants, legitimizing the reasons their political claim. However this version as well as impose itself in the population's collective imagination, is the most accredited in the field of science production. The need arises the recognition of the matter, starting from the chronological sequence of the construction projects, a good starting point for calling into question the traditional assumptions. Overall there are two fundamental caesurae: the first intervened from building prodution's standpoint in the mid 30's, the other one intervened in the housing practices put in place by the inhabitants, in the period between World War II and the post World War II.

Not many studies, in reference to the roman situation, have examinated the way in which social groups are distributed within the urban space. As far as we have an evident framework about the social-economic profile of the areas that deploys the city, it is mostly on the residential models of the upper-middle class, the «bourgeois Rome», in which the historical studies has achieved appreciable results; the studies pursued by the working class appear to be less analyzed.
This paper tries to analyze the residential choices of the workers of Breda through the informations transcribed in the companies register. This reflection face a period of great changes for the Capital such as the one between the two World wars, deals with urban history themes - particularly regarding the survey about the features of the residences, the formation of social identities in the urban environment and the role played by pubblic politicies - and labour history - in the wake of the experiences in this field of research with the opening of the company archives.
