"Feminism in Roman neighborhoods during the 1970s; paths, experiences and memories of local women... more "Feminism in Roman neighborhoods during the 1970s; paths, experiences and memories of local women’s collectives"
MA’s essay became a monograph thanks to a grant from the University of Bologna (Premio Vinka Kitarovic), which financed an academic publication.
This work joined my main research interests: women’s studies, oral history, and urban history. Thanks to a journey from the center of the city – where the earliest feminist groups were created – to the most marginal districts of the Capital, I questioned the feminist activities in working-class neighborhoods. In this way, with a trans-local approach, I put the spotlight on the most important characteristics of Italian Feminism, that is its plurality, its molecularity and its dissemination; but I also launched a reflection on a less studied topic: its social composition in an intersectional perspective.

This research study examines the case of Italy. The timeline goes from the birth of the Republic up to the popular referendum which in 1981 established the Law 194/1978, Norme per la tutela sociale della maternità e sull'interruzione volontaria della gravidanza (Norms for the Social Protection of Motherhood and about the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy). The essay reconstructs the national and transnational scenario in which the revision of the penal code was requested, elaborated, discussed and finally turned into Italian law in 1978; the origins of the movements in favor of birth control and against the crime of abortion in the post-Second World War period (at a time when the issue of overpopulation had been raised at a global level); and, later, the development of this movement in the 1960s and 1970s. The aim is to highlight the interaction between various political cultures and their respective contributions to the debate and reform drive: from the proto environmentalism perspective of the birth control movement, until the self-determination issue of the feminist movement.

In the first part, the essay investigates the Italian feminist movement in the late 1970s and its transformation in the subsequent decade. During this transition, the Italian Women’s Liberation Movement – which until then had displayed a strictly political character – emerged as a prominent cultural phenomenon, leading to the institutionalization of feminist studies in the 1990s. The second section concerns the recent historiographical debate on neo-feminism, with a focus on Anna Rossi-Doria’s cultural and political awareness and on the legacy of her research methods.

Contributi di Anastasia Barone, Elisa Bellè, Elena Biagini, Eleonora Cirant, Chiara Colangelo, Dalila Missero, Marta Panighel, Tommaso Rebora, Clarissa Ricci, Giulia Sbaffi.

THE FINAL DEADLINE HAS BEEN POSTPONED FURTHER TO THE FIRST JULY 2022.
THE RESPONSE WILL BE GIVEN WITHIN THE FIFTEENTH JULY

«Contemporanea», one of the leading Italian journals of contemporary history, is pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue on the history of feminisms: Transnational Feminist Movements in History: Convergences, Intersections and Tensions.
The aim is to shed light on how transnational and transgenerational coalitions, alliances and networks (or, otherwise, the divergences and differences between different feminist actors), have impacted their trajectories and the definition of feminism itself across time and space, since the late nineteenth century until the most recent anti-globalisation movement(s), according to different national, political and historical contexts.
The call is directed at authors who are currently engaged in historical research on feminism in its various guises across the globe from the nineteenth century to contemporary times, and who approach women’s and gender history from a transnational perspective. The selected papers will be published in a special issue of the journal aiming to reflect not only
the wide variety of feminist movements and feminist activisms globally, but especially their interconnections and exchanges. Studies of the interactions between feminist movements and other socio-political actors and political instances are also welcome.
The proposals should be sent by the First July 2022.
Responses will be announced via e-mail by 15 June 2022, and the selected essays must be submitted in their final form by 31 January 2023.
The special issue will be published by Autumn 2023.

testo della Call:
− Movimenti femministi dal XX secolo ai giorni nostri: casi di studio locali e nazionali; ricerche comparative e di storia globale; ricerche che guardano ad analogie e differenze tra femminismi di epoche e contesti geografici e socioculturali diversi;
− Effetti, risultati, eredità dei movimenti femministi, sul piano istituzionale, politico e socioculturale;
− Approcci metodologici innovativi (ad esempio sull'intreccio di memoria, attivismo e ricerca storica, e sull'uso delle fonti orali); − Mobilità e circolazione translocale e transnazionale di persone, idee, testi e traduzioni; − Soggetti del femminismo: trasformazioni, alleanze, conflitti (femminismi e transfemminismi, soggettività lgbtqi*, femminismi intersezionali, femminismi post-coloniali, femminismi neoliberali e populisti);
− Rappresentazione e autorappresentazione dei femminismi attraverso media, arti visive e performative.
