The thesis analyses the descriptive and metaphorical functions of fashion and its extensions in Rodoreda's and Martín Gaite's most important novels, as a useful element in the characters' construction and evolution.

La tesis se propone analizar las funciones descriptivas y metafóricas de la moda y de sus extensiones como elementos útiles para la construcción y la evolución de los personajes y del contexto en algunas de las novelas más importantes de Rodoreda y Martín Gaite, destacadas voces femeninas de la posguerra española

The article aims to produce a new contemporary reading of Car-men Martín Gaite's work through the analysis of three novels (El cuarto de atrás, Nubosidad variable, Irse de casa) from the perspective of the Cultural Studies' branch of Fashion Theory, which offers an interpretation of the connection between fashion and other cultural phenomena, in this case literature. Fashion as social event, as non-verbal linguistic system and cultural aspect is involved in the literary criticism of the books, in which it plays different functions, useful to the character's definition, the description of the places and, thanks to its important symbolism, the metaphorical representation .
