The Anglo-American Rediscovery of Italian Renaissance Gardens, 2024

Some of them, mostly women, wrote books dedicated to Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque gardens, at a time when the interest of Italian scholars in formal gardens was extremely low. Those books were full of photographs, with concise texts, which had two main aims: to give practical tips and provide basic historical information for visiting the main gardens and to explain methods and principles adopted by Renaissance architects to create these places. The authors wanted to push readers to build "great formal gardens", inspired by examples of the past, applying Renaissance principles “in the changed circumstances of modern life” (George Sitwell). This proposal aims to examine some of these works, focusing on the way Anglo-American scholars interpreted and shaped the idea of the "Italian Renaissance garden".

When Galeazzo Alessi undertook the project, the Sacro Monte was one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Northern Italy. It was known as the ‘Jerusalem’ of Varallo, because it physically reproduced many monuments of the Holy Land and recreated in the middle of the Alps the spatial experience of visiting Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth.
Many studies on the Sacro Monte suggest that Alessi set aside the idea of reproducing the sites of the Holy Land and designed a sort of ideal city, a garden of marvels and delights. Nevertheless, a deeper analysis of the Libro dei Misteri reveals a striking number of iconographical links to the Holy Land: as stated by architect himself in the pages of the book, “the buildings [are designed to] imitate the true ones in the city of Hierusalem”. Examining the case of the Temple of Salomon, the main architectural element designed in the Libro dei Misteri, I argue that Alessi merged Renaissance architectural ideals with many different literary and figurative sources, such as the Bible, pilgrims’ accounts, printed and painted images of the Holy Land. With the advice of the Franciscan friars in Milan, Alessi was able to interpret voices and images of his time and to create a sophisticated and modern Nova Hierusalem.

This essay retraces the history of the Palazzo della Ragione in Ferrara, a key public building with medieval origins which was rebuilt during the postwar years according to a project by Marcello Piacentini. The research will specifically focus on the aesthetic and political debates generated by the building and on the pivotal role played by Piacentini, thanks to the extensive body of documents collected at the Biblioteca di Scienze Tecnologiche of the University of Florence and at the City Archives of Ferrara.
By following the steps which led to the final design and the construction, the essay highlights the role of the building in larger debates concerning the restoration of historical monuments after the destruction caused by the Second World War and the contribution of architecture in the definition of a national identity after the divisions caused by the fall of the fascist regime.

The exhibition narrates in six sections the garden of the Mitchell Acton family: from its conception to its design, use and fortune, as if on a journey through places and times. Thanks to the variety and integrity of the photographic and library heritage preserved inside the Villa, enhanced in recent years through the digitisation project, the exhibition illustrates the evolution of the ‘Italian’ garden, conceived by Hortense Mitchell and Arthur Acton starting since 1903, when they moved to Villa La Pietra.

The years between 1560 and 1584 represent a turning point for the Sacro Monte of Varallo Sesia, one of the most important sanctuaries in Northern Italy. The Sacro Monte was founded in 1491 by the Franciscan friar Bernardino Caimi with the aim of recreating the sacred sites of the Holy Land in the Catholic Europe. Around 1560, as the Council of Trent was coming to an end, Giacomo d’Adda – a wealthy patrician from Milan – entrusted the Late Renaissance architect Galeazzo Alessi with the design of a renovation plan for the Sacro Monte. The project took form in a manuscript volume of drawings known as ‘Libro dei Misteri’ (Book of the Mysteries of the Life of Christ). Thanks to the Libro dei Misteri, Galeazzo Alessi introduced in the Sacro Monte a ‘nuovo miglior ordine’ (‘new better order’), that radically changed not only the artistic, architectural and devotional instances of the Fabbrica, but also its administrative organisation. This ambitious plan was marked by the continuous disagreements with the Franciscan friars of Varallo – who were in charge of the religious life on the Sacro Monte – and by the efforts to get financial aid for the accomplishment of Alessi’s ‘new better order’. Nevertheless, the local patricians (the ‘vicinanza’) welcomed the plan by Giacomo d’Adda and its architectural project, as presented by Galeazzo Alessi in the Libro dei Misteri. From that moment onwards – at least until 1584 – , the ‘vicinanza’ would undertake to transform the ‘Hierusalem’ of Bernardino Caimi in a pivotal monument to the Counter-Reformation.
This book investigates the administrative and building history of the Sacro Monte between 1560 and 1580. These were years in which the fame of the Sacro Monte bloomed, as it became a model of many others ‘Sacri Monti’ built throughout the Alps in the following centuries. The Sacro Monte of Varallo is a dynamic and complex reality, the scene of continuous administrative contrasts and of an intense building activity. A leading role in its history was played by Giacomo d’Adda, who was able to give form to his economic and political ambitions on the Valsesia region through his arts patronage on the Sacro Monte. Thanks to the analysis of previously unpublished documents, this book focuses on the role of the secular patronage, the religious institutions involved in the ‘new better order’ (Carlo Borromeo and the Order of Friars Minor), and Martino Bassi, who inherited Galeazzo Alessi’s position as chief-architect on the Sacro Monte between 1578 and 1583.
