Starting from the specific exemplum of the strategic campaign of communication the City of Turin has created in the occasion of the Olympic Games in 2006, and from the street graffiti that have appeared along city walls in the same period, we try to understand what does the expression ‘city as a text’ means in a semiotic point of view

The purpose of semiotics is, rather, that of indicating the discursive conditions that encourage the proliferation of such conspiratorial or anti-conspiratorial thinking, and simultaneously also the more difficult purpose of suggesting how to reframe conflict in a different discursive framework, one that does not simply create rhetorical conflict but casts the basis for social action. The problem of conspiracy theories, from a semiotic point of view, lies not in their supposed logical or scientific fallacy, but in the fact that they are a means to voice a social preoccupation that would, otherwise, remain unexpressed, that is, anguish toward the increasing deconstruction of knowledge in the new digital arenas. Semioticians and other social scholars should, therefore, operate not for the debunking of such supposed conspiracy theories, but for the creation of a collective space in which the evident confusion of present-day digital communication could be raised as a problem, discussed, and possibly redirected toward more convenient solutions.

Starting from some example of contemporary flash-mob demonstrations, organized to fight for a new emancipation of women in contemporary culture and society, this paper tries to point out a semiotic theory of body and to explain how these performances allow the ri-semantization of collective values and practices. Plus, I will propose some considerations on gender stereotypes connected with some events just as Femen’s demonstrations (the Ukrainian protest movement) and on the way these kind of protests manipulate the meaning and the external idea of female body in our society.
If we consider the protest as a form of narration in which the expression of a subjectivity becomes plural acting on the symbolic level of reality, then it is clear that it is important to analyze the forms of its representation to better understand the phenomenon. Protests exist thanks to the presence of signs and these signs influence interpretations, pragmatic effects and general meanings of protests themselves. As narrations, also protests are mainly relational: without “the Other” there is no protest, because it is the communication that allows to detect differences and similarities as base of intersubjectivity.
In our modern society we have attended the birth and the progression of a particular kind of protest that is FLASH-MOB: a short assembly of a group of people that, as we said before, in a public space, perform some kind of unusual or extraordinary action: to dance, to fight, to cry, to sing or even to stay motionless for some minutes.
Flash mobs are often used by feminist groups to express some kind of dissenting thinking by the mainstream. I will analyze some of these experiences whose aim was to claim a right to equality between women and men, to conquer again a self respect for women (most of all in media universe) and to value the female body not as an object, but as a subject.
Main questions of the paper will concern the idea of body in a semiotic perspective: how do bodies express their meaning? Which kind of implication do they have as social, historical and cultural objects? How can we consider them as texts and sense creators? How do they get connected with the concept of performance? How does this particular kind of performance that is Flash-mob contribute to create new codes and new experiences (maybe new stereotypes) in a gender perspective?

Key words: Semiotics of culture, Semiotics of body, Gender --- Sebbene meno in uso recentemente, ... more Key words: Semiotics of culture, Semiotics of body, Gender --- Sebbene meno in uso recentemente, le immagini che raffigurano la nazione nelle “vesti” di una donna hanno origini antichissime e diffusioni amplissime (la Marianna, la Britannia, l’Anima Celtica – Irlanda , la Donna della montagna – Islanda sono solo alcuni esempi).
