The essay concerns an aspect that has not yet been explored, namely the contribution of Karl Lachmann (1793-1851) to the studies of ancient Christian literature and early Christian texts. Unlike those on classical, New Testament and Germanic philology, there are no relevant publications of Lachmann’s studies. But, thanks to his reputation, his friends turned to him for advice and corrections. The one who benefits most from his suggestions is Christian K. Josias von Bunsen (1791-1860), who reports Lachmann’s indications in his volumes dedicated to Ignatius of Antioch and the Antenicene Fathers. The research shows in particular Lachmann’s interest in sub-apostolic literature and Christian literature of the first centuries.

The rediscovery and revaluation of ancient Greek philosophy was one of the most relevant results ... more The rediscovery and revaluation of ancient Greek philosophy was one of the most relevant results of the rebirth of the classical studies in the Renaissance, and, thanks to pivotal figures such as Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola, Platonism became a cornerstone in the history of Western thought. Nevertheless, before the flowering of Platonic studies, a struggle between the supporters of Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy exploded: this is the so-called Plato-Aristotle controversy.
The key figures of this controversy were George of Trebizond, who produced a treatise against Plato, and Cardinal Bessarion, who replied to George of Trebizond in the In calumniatorem Platonis. Shortly after, Bessarion’s protégées Domizio Calderini and Niccolò Perotti wrote two treatises in support of his patron, which represent the most significant products of the last stage of the Plato-Aristotle controversy.
In this volume I reconstructed the different phases of the controversy, and then I focused on Calderini and Perotti’s works, that I edited, translated and commented for the first time. The book provides the first general overview on the Plato-Aristotle controversy, and an in-depth analysis of these two treatises, which were produced at the crossroad of Platonism, Medieval philosophy and Modern thought.

A group of unpublished letters by Flacius concerning his relationship with the printers Johannes Oporinus and Henricus Petrus proves that Flacius sent to Petri a copy of Ennodius’ works in order to publish it, and he wrote a preface to this edition. Flacius’ preface is actually preserved in a copy of the editio princeps, now preserved in the Basel university Library, with the shelfmark FK III 11. The paper also contains a reassessment on Ennodius’ works published before the 1569 editio princeps.

In this essay, the author demonstrates that Rauer's edition of the catenistic fragments must be used very carefully, because its methodological fundamentals are way obsolete. He analyses the case of Or. hom. 38 in Lc. 5 (215, 12-216, 4 Rauer) and fr. 239 Rauer in Lc., and brings new data on the attribution of these passages to Origen.

The author proposes a new interpretation of Eusebius’ passage by comparing it with what Severus of Antioch says in his Homily. The final chapter deals with a possible allusion to a lost Quaestio ad Marinum in Severus’ Homily.

CE), which was somehow connected with the Messalian heresy. The article discusses the ancient sources regarding Lampetius and his doctrines, and contains a new edition of the fragments of Contra testamentum Lampetii.

Prinzivalli, the article aims to show that two Greek fragments usually attributed to Origen (Or. fr. 241-242 Rauer (90-91 Crouzel-Fournier-Périchon) in Lc.) are actually spurious. The author demonstrates that M. Rauer linked the first fragment to Origen because he misread the lemma in the manuscript Par. Coisl. 612. Moreover, he identifies two “new” testimonies of the fragments (Vat. Pal. gr. 20, Vind. theol. gr. 117), in which they are both ascribed to Apollinaris of Laodicea. Indeed, several proofs indicate that Or. fr. 241-242 Rauer in Lc. should be attributed to Apollinaris, and should be published as one fragment, together with another small excerpt by Apollinaris (Apoll. fr. 11,5-6 Reuss in Lc.).

The mail goal is to show that Severus was influenced not only by the Antiochene exegesis, but also by Origen and the so-called Alexandrian exegetical school. First, the author traces all the explicit references to Origen and Didymus the Blind in Severus’s works, and analyses the method Severus used in reading Origen. Then he focuses on three allegories, which are found in Severus’s Greek fragments: these metaphors were firstly developed by Origen and the Alexandrian school and were probably mediated by Cyril of Alexandria and the Cappadocian fathers, such as Gregory of Nyssa.

First of all, the author discusses the date of this sermon, and analyses its literary background. Then, he focuses on the manuscript witnesses of each fragment, and tackles the issue of their authorship. As three of the fragments were not included in the last edition by Maurice Brière and François Graffin (PO 38/2), the author finally offers the first critical edition of all the extant fragments, provided with an Italian translation.

These fragments were indicated by Michael von Faulhaber at the end of 20th century, but were still unpublished. The author tries to contextualize these fragments in the extant production of Severus, which is mainly preserved in Syriac translation.
