The idea of a call for papers was born within the Committee for the Centenary that was established in October 2018 at the National Academy of San Luca, an institution which De Carlo was president of in 2001-2002. The centenary has given rise to numerous projects that have alternated and intertwined in a free spirit that reflects the character of Giancarlo De Carlo. The initiative responded to the need to reflect once again on a very complex and layered legacy, both in time and in space, to be shared with the latest generations of architects and students in a dialogue between witnesses and collaborators of GDC and those who are getting to know him for the first time.[1] Until some time ago, examining Giancarlo De Carlo meant delving into studies on a troublesome figure, o...

The main scientific focus, heritage, works as a cross-cutting topic that is investigated according to the different disciplinary perspectives. At the same time this issue is able to merge the diverse souls of the research team: history of architecture, geomatics, drawing and survey, restoration, regeneration and design. Major results and findings are discussed throughout a set of case studies. These allowed to develop tools to perform rapid surveys and multilevel readings (stylistic, structural, historical, behavioral, etc.) as well as robust procedures for interventions and recycle at different scales of built heritage. Technologies and procedures are tested and validated on these cases that serve as p...

Over the years the DICEA has steadily focused its attention on resilient environments and buildings, making a growing know-how and skill available to the local and broad communities. Pivotal to this have been dedicated projects and funds, like the UNIVPM strategic projects and the MIUR Dipartimenti di Eccellenza award. In conjunction with the four companion papers, produced by researchers of the four divisions of DICEA, we illustrate the DICEA’s trajectory in the analysis of sustainable engineering for resilient built and natural environments.

The essay analyses two residential buildings, Fen Court by Hughes and Bicknell in 1939-40, and William Stone Building, built in 1963-64 according to the design by Sir Leslie Martin and Colin St John Wilson, through drawings and documents, partly unpublished, from the archives of the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, Peterhouse College and the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies in Cambridge. The role of critics in the opposition between 'avant-garde' and 'traditionalists' is revealed through the figures of James M. Richards, Nikolaus Pevsner and David Watkin.

For centuries considered on the fringes of the Western world, Northern civilizations have developed architectural languages, forms and techniques that emerged from peculiar environmental and climatic conditions, material needs and specific urban models. Northern Europe was an area of migrations and settlements, clashes, contacts and exchange among Germanic, Arctic, British and Slavic populations. Between the nineteenth and twentieth century, architecture became a tool to underscore specific local, national, and even international characters, from national romanticism to neo-vernacular movements, until the emergence of modernism. Cultures of the North aims at disseminating the many architectural cultures of Northern Europe among academic and non-academic readers. It intends to publish both original research projects and translations into English of key studies only available in the Nordic languages. Its publications will share a historical-critical point of view on architecture and the city from the Middle Ages until today.
