This article presents an identity based pharmacognostical study of the leaf and stem of Carduus benedictus (Compositae). Morphoanatomy of the leaf were studied using to aid pharmacognostical and taxonomical identification, using light and confocal microscopy. The morphological, anatomical parameters and physic-chemical profile presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of C. benedictus and can possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other related species.

The present study aims at developing a simple, sensitive and specific liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the quantification of pantoprazole sodium (PS) in human plasma using pantoprazole D3 (PSD3) as internal standard (IS). Chromatographic separation was performed on Zorbax SB-C18, 4.6 mm x 75 mm, 3.5 microm, 80 A column with an isocratic mobile phase composed of 10 mM ammonium acetate (pH 7.10): acetonitrile (30:70, v/v), pumped at 0.6 mL/min. PS and PSD3 were detected with proton adducts at m/z 384.2-->200.1 and 387.1-->203.1 in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) positive mode, respectively. Precipitation method was employed in the extraction of PS and PSD3 from the biological matrix. This method was validated over a linear concentration range of 10.00-3000.00 ng/mL with correlation coefficient (r) > or = 0.9997. Intra- and inter-day precision of PS were found to be within the range of 1.13-1.54 and 1.76-2.86, respectively. Both analytes were stable throughout freeze/thaw cycles, bench top and postoperative stability studies. This method was successfully utilized in the analysis of blood samples following oral administration of PS (40 mg) in healthy human volunteers.

In this study, the anti ulcerogenic effect of water extract obtained from the leaves of Pueraria Tuberosa[PT] was investigated using cold restraint stress(CRU), pyloric ligation(PL) & Ethanol induced (EtOH) induced gastric ulcer models in rats. The treatment with PT at higher dose significantly inhibited gastric lesions induced by CRU (76.6%), PL (80.1%) & EtOH (70.6%) respectively with equal potency of Omeperazole. In addition the effects of PT on HKATPase activity was determined. PT significantly inhibited HKATpase activity in EtOH induced ulcer model. PT accelerated the healing of EtOH induced ulcers by inhibiting HKATPase activity.

Abstract Aerial part of Salvia officinalis was collected from Al-Zawia,Libya and was subjected to hydro distillation in a Clevenger apparatus for 3 h. The yield of the pale yellow coloured oil was 0.4 % on fresh weight basis. Thirteen components of the oil were identified by GC-MS which contained 90.3 % monoterpenoids and only (8.1 %) sesqui terpenoids. The essential oil and its fractions showed a significant antibacterial effect against E. faecalis and S. paratyphi.

Simple aqueous titrimetric method is developed for the determination of metronidazole in tablets. The proposed method is based on the reduction of the nitro group to amino group of the molecule with zinc and 6M HCl. The reduced molecule was diazotised with sodium nitrite at 5-10 o C. The reactions were carried out in aqueous medium without the use of organic solvents. This method was validated by low values of statistical parameters viz, standard deviation, related standard deviation and standard error of mean. This method is novel, accurate and economic and eco-friendly. The proposed method is recommended for quality control, routine analysis and developed for academic purpose.
